The Museum of Socialist Art (MSA) opened on September 19th 2011 as part of the structure of the National Museum of Bulgarian Art and is under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. The museum consists of a sculptural park (7,500 square metres), where 80 works of monumental sculpture are exhibited at present; and an exhibition hall (550 square metres), designed for works of easel art. There is also a video hall, where archival and documentary films related to the socialist era are projected. The souvenir shop offers authentic items, books and postcards as well as contemporary items. The sculptural area will be supplemented and enriched, while the expositions in the interior part will be periodically updated. Thereby, it will be possible to show different perspectives and diverse curatorial interpretations of the Socialist period in Bulgarian fine arts.

This museum has an interesting collection of Socialist statues that were once located around the city. There is also an art gallery of socialist related paintings. The statues are all outside so it's best to visit on a dry day!

If you've never seen socialist statues, you might like it. We attended during the free museum nights and it didn't have anything specifically interesting.

The first thing I'd say is this place is purely an art museum so if you're looking for the history of socialism in Bulgaria this is not the place to go. Moving on from that, this museum was great and I ended up having so...More

I am sure that for local people - this museum may bring back very unpleasant memories - but as a Westerner you can only look at everything and wonder about the absurdity of propaganda and how awful it must have been to live in a...More

Definitely a must visit! The only museum that I saw so far talking about communism. Definitely visit on a sunny day to enjoy the outdoor sculptures.

It was a little hard to get to but worth the visit. There is a nice collection of statues - not as big as in Budapest - and a little museum shop.

Visit this on a sunny day, the outdoor part with statues is amazing if you like communist art (powerful), the indoor exhibition with paintings is not that exciting.
