    Only functional
The Banya Bashi mosque is the only functional one of the 70 what was before in Sofia. This wonderful mosque is a typical monument of Ottoman architecture that adds color to the center of Sofia and is located in a triangle because there is a synagogue and an Orthodox church nearby. It gets its name from the neighboring Central Bath because Banya Bashi means 'many baths'. "Banya" is the Bulgarian word for bath. The exterior is not that special, but the interior is absolutely spectacular. What is significant about the mosque is the domed ceiling, which was restored to its original design after the fall of communism. The calligraphy is excellent. There are also the ruins of a hammam in the neighborhood. The muezzin calls the faithful to prayer 5 times a day every day through the loudspeaker on the minaret. Banya Bashi Mosque is not officially opened as a tourist attraction and there is no entrance fee. Visitors are welcome outside prayer times, including women, if they are dressed according to customs. Don't forget to take off your shoes when you enter. You can take photos inside the mosque, although it's always best to ask as it might disturb someone praying inside.

Worth a visit if you are in sofia
Visited this mosque whilst in sofia. The mosque is worth a visit . Take shoes off before entering & ladies need to cover head with scarf , they have spare head scarfes near the entrance. It's also free to go inside. Very quiet & peaceful.

    A beautiful mosque
The Banya Bashi is the only still functional mosque in Sofia. We took our shoes off and went into the mosque, which is beautiful, quiet and peaceful. When we were there they had the afternoon prayer time, I don't know what the muslims thought, when tourists came in during their prayer time, but it was some tourists there. It was informative to follow the prayers rituals.

    Peaceful
When my husband and I first arrived there was a prayer time going on but we were made welcome to wait outside and offered a drink. We decided to go and and come back and on returning and able to enter the mosque the rules were explained (really nicely and appreciated) about covering head/arms etc and a shawl provided to do so. Inside is very peaceful and felt calm - it is also beautiful inside and seriously worth a visit.

Although Sofia once boasted 70 mosques today, Banya Bashi remains the only one still in operation. It was designed in 1576 by Mimar Sinan, one of the greatest Ottoman architects who was responsible for the construction of the Edirne mosque in Thrace and the spectacular blue mosque in Istanbul.
The name derives from its proximity to the Central Baths of Sofia as the word Banya in Bulgarian means bath. Although it doesn't look like anything special from the outside, it hides some magnificent Ottoman art inside. The walls are in fact covered with mosaics with quotes from the Koran and the vault is a magnificent kaleidoscope of colors and geometric figures restored to its original design after the fall of communism. The muezzin calls the faithful to prayer five times a day via the mosque's minaret. The mosque can hold up to 700 faithful but often, especially on Fridays when the function is also broadcast via a loudspeaker, a larger number goes there to pray, occupying the external space. Officially the Banya Bashi mosque is not open to tourists as a tourist attraction and therefore, if entry is granted, the dress code is essential especially for women. Taking photographs is possible but it is always advisable to ask permission as there may be faithful praying.

In all my travels, this is the first mosque I had ever been in. I was immediately impressed with the simple beauty and the vivid colors. The mosque was built in 1566 during the nearly five centuries that Sofia was part of the Ottoman Empire. It is surely worth the few minutes it takes to appreciate it. The name literally means " Head of the Bath" Mosque as it is built over thermal spas.

Beautiful mosque reflecting the city's Ottoman past. Admission is free, although when we left they asked us for a donation, which we did not give, they did not insist. In the square of which it is part, you can see vestiges of all the eras and religions of the city. Interesting

Such a pretty Mosque. Small but so intimate. Dress appropriately. There are scarves for ladies to borrow and remove shoes before entering. A peaceful oasis away from the outside noise. Clean and well kept. Go in and look up. Take in the intricate detail and then go outside and appreciate the architecture. You can notice the Ottoman history and detail. The Mosque welcomes people of all backgrounds but as I said, just dress respectfully. I would suggest to avoid prayer times. You don't need long, maybe ten to fifteen minutes.

What a beautiful, peaceful place of worship. The paintings on the walls and ceilings, as well as the stained glass, are magnificent.

Many thanks to the woman in the mosque who patiently answered many questions that I asked her.

Notes: visitors sometimes need to wait until people complete their prayers. All need to take off their shoes before entering. Women need to cover their heads and arms while inside the mosque. Scarves are available at the front door.

During Sofia's visit it is impossible not to pass by this impressive Ottoman-era mosque. At the entrance, a lady checks that everyone takes off their shoes and assesses the suitability of the clothing of potential visitors. Let's say that I could have appeared there a little more covered and decently dressed; however the lady after looking at me, suggested that I make a very quick visit inside. And so I did; and I would have done it anyway, because inside this building of worship there is not much to see. The exterior is much more beautiful and distinctive.

Friendly locals are really happy to take you through the rules. Obviously be aware you will need to take off shoes and cover your head, legs and arms if you're a woman but apart from that, it's free, beautiful and the people are welcoming and keen to answer any questions you have. It's a very quick place to visit but worth it and it's close to some other attractions.
