- Zo S4 contributionsStunning natureAbsolutely beautiful nature. A lot of walking, but Definitely a "MUST" see. We stayed in a house in Sapareva banya and we have had a long day of walking/ hiking to see the last lake. The view is stunning from the last lake. We stayed in a house in Sapareva banya with mineral waters called "The Rock" and it was very relaxing going into the pool after long day hiking. So definitely would recommend this combination of long day hiking and then relaxing in a pool with mineral water.Visited May 2024Traveled with familyWritten June 11, 2024
- ArranGorebridge, United Kingdom16 contributionsStunning scenery easily accessed.Visited on Sunday 9th June. Got the chair lift from the bottom (25Lev per person for return trip). Takes around 25mins to ascend on chair lift. Very peaceful and lovely views. Only went into the hut at the top of the chair lift to use the toilet which you have to pay to use (1 Lev). The trail itself is well maintained, although very busy. Relatively easy walking with great views. The last section up to the viewpoint is a steep climb and if being honest, doesn't have any significantly better views than the rest of the trail. We returned via the lower path between the lakes which was quieter. Allow 3 to 4 hours for a gentle pace.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 13, 2024
- Twelve wingsBarcelona, Spain17 contributionsAmazing place hinking with kidsThe Seven Rila Lakes is an absolutely gorgeous place to visit. 1h30min by car from Sofía, easy to get there. The chairlift to the top is a nice experience. 25BGN return ticket for adults and 15BGN for children (2022 prices). Children younger than 5yo travel for free. We enjoyed the whole family hiking up to the top, viewing all the 7 lakes. On the way back we unfortunately got lost and almost lost the last chairlift down. We did the last track running, what a suspense! It has been a wonderful experience for the whole family. Almost 8 hours hiking with our small kids, congratulations! Incredible views and landscapes, walking around almost alone in these amazing mountains (no crowds, we crossed only a few other hikers), magic atmosphere. This place will stay in our hearts forever!Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten August 18, 2024
- T-SGlobetrottersPreston, United Kingdom4,112 contributionsSpectacular hikeThe whole seven lakes route quite challenging at 8.4km and an elevation gain of 528m. From the car park it is a short walk to the cable car. Return trip 20 minutes each way is 30 BGN. We took the direct elevated route from the cable car to Babreka (the kidney) lake, the first part is a steady climb on a well marked path before levelling out. The next section is the steepest and pretty tough at times but the arrival at Okoto (the eye) lake and the short walk to the iconic panoramic view of the seven lakes made it very worthwhile. We returned via the lowland route giving a much closer view of four lakes on our return journey. It gives a totally different perspective to the panoramic views up on high. You also get a distant view of the panoramic viewing point and will be amazed how far you have walked. The hike took around 5 hours 40 minutes with a short stop of picnic lunch and short breaks along the way to admire the views. For us a couple in their mid 60’s, it was very tough but doable. Good walking shoes are essential and walking poles particularly for the downhill bits are useful. Best to layer up because the climate at the top of the cable car is markedly cooler than at the bottom.Visited September 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten September 20, 2024

One of the best hiking trail which is situated at 2600 meters above sea level in Rila mountains. The trail is 3,4 hours with spectacular view around 7 glacial lakes. There is a lift which takes you to the start. September is the best month as it’s not very crowded. The first part is hard and it’s about an hour then is mostly flat when you rich “kidney” lake and the magic circle. The third part is the most difficult as the elevation is 300 metres when you encounter “the eye” the deepest lake 37.5 meters. And on the top behind the view point is hidden “the tear” which is the most clear one. From the top you can see all 7 lakes. On the way back the trail is going very down so you go closer to the lower lakes.
If you looking for a place to recover after hiking I really recommend the hotel “Panorama”
Food is amazing and sauna is good a addition

Magnificent nature! The seven Rila lakes are recognized as the most energetic place in the world. Great views from a height of 2500 m. The route is extreme. You need good equipment. The sun is strong and you need sunscreen. Many people visit the Rila lakes in the summer.

The best place with sufficient accommodations to visit the 7 Rila lakes is Sapareva Banya. From there it is about 20 minutes by car, on a good road, to the chairlift. Follow direction Panichishte. For the chairlift you have to go past Panichishte and follow the road for a few more kilometers. Then you automatically arrive at the parking lot where you can park for 5 lev for a whole day. The chairlift up takes about 20 minutes before you arrive at the building with restaurant and the starting point of the walk. It is a circular walk, we walked it to the left. Then you start with a steep climb on a good path and it takes a while before you see the first lake. What a fantastic nature and nowhere to be seen waste. Halfway through the walk you can take a turn to the viewpoint where you can see the 7 lakes at the same time. We didn't. That path was quite steep and you would have to take the same path back to continue the circular walk. The remainder of the walk was more over boulders and occasionally through snow (it was early June). A few lakes were ice-free, but a few lakes were still frozen. We spent about 4 hours on the tour. We made many (photo) stops, a lunch break and a few drinking breaks. So it can be done much faster. Take your food and drinks with you, because you can't get anything along the way. Nature is overwhelming in this area. Really recommended.

A long hike done in August 2023 (so 36 degrees in Bulgaria at that time), with easy paths then slightly more challenging paths, affordable for sporty people overall! (some paths are quite difficult to climb, and above all very long)
But arriving at the highest point, thus allowing you to cover the seven lakes, is a real reward! A magnificent setting!
Only small downside: towards the end of the circuit, we arrive at a small building supposed to be a restaurant, but the food offerings are very minimal, if not non-existent. We weren't even sure if they actually served food (maybe we were in an unfavorable period)
If you decide to go there during the summer period for example, choose weekdays; going up by chairlift is possible at the bottom of the station, but you will wait a good hour and a half before being able to access it (2-seater chairlifts - we were there on a Saturday morning)
Overall, I highly recommend this hike! The opportunity also to meet foreigners on your way, depending on the period :)

About 2 hour pleasant drive from Sofia brings you to a open lift. The lift takes you up to the hut named “Rila lakes” where the actual hike begins. First you climb a rather steep slope to reach a plateau from where you already see three of the seven lakes. Walking along the plateau takes you to the Kidney-lake. If you do not feel like going further you can remain here and enjoy while the others go further to the Ezeren-peak (2550 m) from where you see all the seven lakes. The climbing is not as difficult as it looks and you can always stop and go back, so give it a try. The views are nothing short of spectacular.

Amazing views. Make sure to bring enough cash (25 leva per person) for the lift, they often can't accept credit cards at the ticket station. We did the shorter route that takes about 2.5 hours. We went a bit off season so there were not so many hikers.

Absolutely beautiful nature.
So definitely would recommend this combination of long day hiking and then relaxing in a pool with mineral water.

We stayed at the Alpine hotel in Panichishte which was excellent and a great base for visiting the Rila National Park. There is a chairlift (called Pionerska I think) that takes you up to the open Planina above the tree line. It takes about 20 mins to get up there and the views of the surrounding mountains are superb. there are a number of trails but the main ones are obvious and take you up to Kidney Lake and then up higher to get great views of all the lakes. It's well worth going to the top even though it's quite steep in places. It's all perfectly safe, no drop offs, just great scenery. The weather was superb while we were there (in August) but it was still a bit cool at the top so layers are the order of the day! We spent about 6-7 hours up there but it can be done in less and you'd still get to enjoy some great scenery.

An absolute hit in the Rila Mountains! Quite easy to reach and relatively easy to walk. It's easy to get from Spareva Banya by a mini bus. The trip is 20 leva shared by the passengers. There were 3 of us, so the cost was 7BNL/person. Then there is a chair lift (12 BNL one way 20 return) and then welcome to heaven! Clear cristal air, beautiful nature, surrounding mountains, changing views makes the road charming and spectacular. You can take a "smaller loop" and see 5 lakes in about 3hour time or go to the upper two ones which would take one more hour.
An absolute Must see for nature lovers.
