There is some question as to whether Sofia is considered a saint. It is said she is to erotic and pagan to be so. Never the less, she is still a center of attention and worth a look. The statue was erected in 2000 on the former site of Lenin's statue. She holds a crown for power, a wreath for fame and an owl for wisdom.

Serdika is the central and perhaps main district of Sofia, where you can admire not only the remains of the Roman Decumanus, but also some imposing government buildings.
There are many places to stop for dinner, and many shops for your shopping.
Your exploration of the city will certainly start from here.

While digging up the area for Metro expansions, they stumbled upon what could be the most defining moment for Sofias history. Serdika ruins are the original Sofia..and stand right besides the underground metro station. Beautifully preserved with glass domes and adequate lighting..they are testimonies to Bulgaria's past.

Serdica is the central area of Sofia with some ancient Roman ruins to walk through. A monument and metro station. Cafes and big roads.

Serdika is a great district of Sofia ,this was my first trip to Sofia, first trip to Bulgaria actually and we jumped the metro from Sofia Airport to Sofia Center and we jumped off at Serdika Metro Station as our hotel was only a 10 minute walk from the metro stop and the architecture around the Serdika district was awesome.
By the metro stop their were the ruins of the original Roman settlement of Serdica ,very cool indeed, just walking to our hotel we passed grand looking building such as the Presidential Building, the former Bulgarian Party House Building, a beautiful mosque and many many more beautiful buildings, the rich and diverse architectural styles were cool,Neo Classic, Baroque, modern Communist inspired buildings, just superb, theres also lots of pubs, bars and restaurants in this district and some nice park area's, it's just a great district of Sofia to visit.
Well worth checking out if your planning a trip to Sofia.

Walking around Serdika is a fantastic way to see the historical heart of Sofia. Everything is within a five to ten-minute walk, and the historical buildings contrasted with the ancient ruins gives you plenty of photo opportunities.
Besides that, there are public squares where you can sit in the shade and watch the passing parade, restaurants where you can enjoy wonderful food and a subway station to take you to any other place in Sofia.
Even on a hot summer's day, spend the morning walking around the cathedrals, the excavations, the mosques, the mall and squares - time well spent.

Saint Sofia is the city's patron, but many say that she is to erotic to be a saint, anyway, she is better than the statue of Lenin, which stood here before.

Very impressive set of ancient Roman ruins around the top of Vitosha Boulevard. A lot of this is freely visible from the streets. There are some information signs in some areas giving some of the history.
