About
The complex consist of two parts, the first of which is the so-called "Largo zone", situated underneath Nezavisimost Square, integrates the unearthed archaeological remains into a site for cultural events. (opening hours: 07:00-22:00, free entrance) The second part of the complex encompasses the archaeological exhibition underneath Knyaginya Maria Luiza Boulevard. The complex consists of several insulae along the main streets of the Roman city, where the houses of the city elite were located. Within an area of 6000 m2 parts of six streets are visible, along with two early Christian basilicas, thermae and five buildings with residential, production and trade functions. Most of the buildings are of a considerable size, include both a private heating system and a bath, and are distinguished for their rich internal decoration, all of which illustrates the resources of the city elite in Serdica in the period of its heyday (IV – VI century). (opening hours: 10:00-18:00)
Duration: 1-2 hours

    An "underground" site
This ancient site was only recently discovered when engineers began digging a new metro station. Instead of bulldozing the site, or forgoing the metro, Sofia excavated the site and preserved it AND built the metro. It's literally an easy access free archeological site in an underground metro station.

    Interesting Walk!!
Interesting to walk through where the ruins of the past Serdica converges with the present modern Sofia. Historically , Serdica an ancient Roman complex was unearthed in 20th century . Their find includes an amphitheater, roman roads, and christian basilicas. Although we did not find much time to explore more into its museum , it is indeed an historical adventure to walk through lots of ruins from Roman era, sightseeing the exterior of Banya Bashir Mosque & President Building, several structures of surrounding buildings etc .!!

Explore the old Serdica from ancient times where Christianity saw its milestones
A very interesting remnants which mainly the history lovers will appreciate. There's a place where arianism was firstly rejected (343) and also a place where Christianity has been accepted (tolerated) by Edict of Serdica (311). You can try to feel the atmosphere at the place where it all happened.

Incredible archaeological complex right underneath the metro. The scale of the complex is mind blowing. The glass roof is a nice touch because it lets natural light in. I spent at least an hour walking around looking at everything!

We wandered into the inner part (which has to be paid for) by mistake, but we are not sorry. You can see the remains of ancient streets, houses, even toilets, pipelines and baths.
But there is a lot to see outside as well, and in the covered part under the Nezavisimost plaza where the Serdica ancient complex is.

I was surprised at how many Roman ruins this city has to offer. A lot of it is still being excavated and prepared for viewing. There is a lot to see around the Serdika metro station and it is freely accessible and beautifully displayed.

It is just mind blowing that there are is such an ancient bit of history in the centre of Sofia, surrounded by an Ottoman time mosque, a synagogue and a orthodox temple all in close proximity.

Very interesting archeological complex in the very center of the city, showing the remains of the ancient Roman city of Serdica. The complex is very large and is free to visit.

Discovered and excavated while building Sofia's metro system (1990's), Serdica Archaeological Complex is easily accessible. Infrastructures are built around the artifacts (kudos to architects and city planners). There is a lot to see.

This small area displays the ruins of Roman Serdica (ca. 1st-6th century AD) discovered during the construction of Sofia's metro. Besides the open-air bit, another section of the ruins was opened for visitors (with an entry fee) a few months ago near the entry to the metro next to the Sofia mosque. It contains the remains of a large Roman street and of various subsequent layers of buildings as well as objects found during excavations.
