We did a 2-days snowshoe hike in Rila National Park in March 2022. The hike took us 6 hours on the first and approximately 4.5 hours on the second day, which was pretty challenging (and I would recommend it only if you're in good physical condition) but absolutely worth it! The views were amazing and getting to spend two days in the untouched nature of the snow covered Rila mountains, far away from the bustle of the everyday life, was priceless.
We visited the Skakavitsa waterfall (still completely frozen at the time), walked past the 7 Rila Lakes and ascended to the Otovitsa and Haramiyata peaks. My favourite part, though, was walking across the mountain ridge with stunning views of the 7 Rila Lakes, Vitosha, Rila and even Pirin Mountains. The weather was sunny but we had strong winds on the second day. Winter hiking in such conditions can be dangerous (be sure to have good hiking equipment!) but we felt safe with our experienced guide Velko who was at all times happy to explain about the mountains and beyond and was a very pleasant company.
The overnight in the hut was a unique experience, which I would absolutely recommend. We were greeted by the hut keeper Georgi who played on the traditional Rhodopi bag pipe and prepared us a delicious dinner and breakfast. The hut itself is beautifully decorated and being there we had the feeling time has stopped. The atmosphere was relaxed and harmonious and so much different than anything else we experienced in Bulgaria - it's really a world of its own up there.
All in all, it was an amazing experience. Even before the tour we were impressed by the good communication - our first contact, Kiril, promptly answered every question we had (even though he was in Morocco at the time) and even helped us find accommodation in Sapareva Banya as well as gave us useful tips on restaurants and much more. The guidance was professional and for the 2 days with Velko in the mountains we didn't have to worry about anything.
Thanks again and keep on with the great job!!
