My only reason for vsitijg this market was to get fresh fruits. It seems to be the locals' market and holds memories of the past mortar shelling that's destroyed lives in the city. For the visitors I saw there, I am almost sure they were not familiar with the history of this market or even care. Nevertheless, it's a place for fresh veggies and fruits.

When visiting a new city, I always enjoy going to the local market to help understand how the locals eat. This market is filled with a wide variety of items and friendly vendors. There is also a Sarajevo Rose at the back of the market.

A van tour that we took did just a quick drive-by of this market, but we wanted to see it in more detail so went back ourselves later in the day. This is a functioning market; it seemed to mainly have fruits and flowers. It is also the site of two different bombings during the Siege of Sarajevo, which tragically claimed more than 100 lives. There is a memorial at the back of the market which contains the names of those who lost their lives.

The same salad that costs 1 KM outside the market gate is 6 KM inside the market.
I checked several times. The prices become 4-6 times more when they figure out you are a foreigner.
Is this how you welcome your guests?

It took some time to find this place but I always have a thing for the local marketplaces. It is a great place to meet up with the locals. Also a great place to see what kind of variety there is for vegetables and fruit. Loved this place.

It's a proper, functioning local market, with fresh fruit and veg and a location of one of the Sarajevo Roses.
City war tours usually stop at this location as well do give you a bit of history about one of the worst mortar hits the city took.

Pijaca Markale is in the centre of Sarajevo and on the face of it is a busy, bustling market. It is not immediately apparent that here was the scene of two separate mortar shellings in 1994 and 1995 during the Siege of Sarajevo and many people were massacred as a consequence. Pijaca Markale is nice place to wander around and also to commemorate all of those who lost their lives.

Stumbled upon this market during my stay in Sarajevo. Bought half a kilogram of carrots for my Carottes Braisées au Beurre.
To be honest, I've had better. And note that I know a thing or two about quality carrots.

This is not just a green/wet/open market, but a market with a sad war history. Many people were killed when grenades exploded. The attacks ocured Feb 5th, 1994 and Aug 28th 1995, both times at noon.
In the middle of the market there is a "rose": an explosion mark, filled with red resin.
The market nowadays sells only fresh stuff: vegs and fruits in the right season: no strawberries in Winter.....!
It is a short walk from Bascarsija. The footpath is not very safe, or not existing, be careful.
Next to the market is the famous pizzarestaurant: AGO...

Along with being a central market place where locals come to shop with tourists visiting as well, it is also an area for a memorial of those people killed by a mortar strike in the conflict.
The market has an awesome atmosphere, great fresh produce and a buzzing vibe with all the stores. I really enjoyed this as its a place to see how the locals live.

I agree with Haytham Abu Firas. It seems you want other people to do the research for you.
