This is a remarkable museum which, fortunately, secured its treasures during the war. We visited the front two galleries which covered prehistoric times and then development up to the 15th century. Luckily, we were with our tour guide who could interpret the displays as English subtitles are rare.

This beautiful and graceful marble palace does an excellent job of displays. New glass or lucite cases with state-of-the-art lighting allow items to be seen at their best. Fortunately, we were visiting on the one Saturday a month and the single hour of that Saturday that visitors could examine the historical Hagadah (maybe the museum's dearest treasure).

In the courtyard is a small botanical garden. There are not numbers of specimens but the space is pleasant and well designed.

If you are staying in the historical district you need to take the tram to the newer part of town, near the government buildings.

I wasn't expecting much from this museum but was pleasantly surprised by the buildings, displays, and even a botanical garden inside. The four buildings contain the departments of archaeology, ethnology, natural history, and a library. The library was not open for visitors when I was there. There was also a Japanese manga exhibition in one of the buildings which was a nice surprise.

Don't miss the building containing re-created rooms of a wealthy Muslim family's house. It's a gorgeous and well-preserved example of that era. The courtyard/garden has Medieval tombstones aka Stecak which are fascinating with several in good conditions that you can view the carvings on them.

I spent about 3 hours here with only a few other visitors as the place was empty. Apart from needing a gift shop and coffee shop, it was a lovely visit. Recommended if you're in the city.

Purpose-built as a museum at the turn of the 20th century, the structure itself is really fascinating. The collections inside are well-organized and carefully labeled. Although some of the exhibits can be considered a bit dated, there are also temporary exhibits that really connect the past with the present. The entrance fee is not high. It is well worth a visit.

The exhibitions in the national museum are more related to the ancient history, Greek and Roman culture influencing the settlement in the Balkan region. Not much facts specific to the Bosna history and also almost none related to the Ottoman period (ruled Bosna for over 400 years) and the internal-civil war period. The only surprising finding for us was the learning about book of Hagadah (i.e. ancient Jewish heritage kept in Sarajevo museum)

This place I expected more local history but it had artefacts from the Bronze Age and Roman times. These are well kept and interesting to see how much there was. The Jewish 16th century book which you can’t get close is most valuable item,

well, how do I even start !. let me point out that I'm open to a museum as much as the next person but rolling up to this museum on a bleak cold January day with the idea of killing some time turned out to be something quite different. we rocked up full of expectation and payed the 8 euro ticket without hesitation or hindrance. the first room was filled with a bunch of boring old rocks without an English plague to read so was more of out the hat experience than anything else. But hey there must be something better in the other rooms and buildings THERE MUST BE. The other buildings have been in drastic need to renovation since the eighteen twenties, and stuck in an era of pre darwinism. Thats right the other buildings payed homage to all the animals of the world without so much as a single indunglnous Bosnian animal. We had finally found out what had happened to the Sarajevo National Zoo, all the animals had been ungraciously lumped in here. I can picture the conversation that happened.

Museum Curator : Here listen mate, we have four thousand square feet to fill any ideas ?

Local Butcher : No problem I'll sort you out mate, my uncle once stuffed a cat. I got you covered !

The stench of dust and mustiness was only overpowered by the thoughts of pity and insult to these poor animals which no longer resembled themselves. was that a dog or a cat ?? I don't think they know anymore. But listen if you've got a keen interest in taxidermy this is the place for you to learn exactly what happens when it goes catastrophically wrong. But if your not I would recommend saving your heard earned eight euros.

Sadly, the Sarajevo Haggadah is not presently on display and staff did not appear to know when it will again be. The archeological section of the museum is interesting and well-signed in English and Bosnian. The whole place has a lovely, slightly frayed antiquarian feel about it.

I didn't enjoy the collection as much as the building itself and an amazing botanical garden inside of it. All in all it is worth a visit. It is also worth seeing Sarajevo haggadah. Just make sure you check that it is possible on the day that you visit. It is not always open to public.

I enjoyed 3 hour long visit to this National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina very much. It has excellent collections of ethnology, biology, geography and history, as well as wonderful botanical garden. Some of the exhibits are priceless like Sarajevo Haggadah. Price is 8 KM per an adult.

The National Museum has been closed for quite a while now, due to the inability/unwillingness of the government to support it. This unfortunately seems to be another piece of evidence of the indifference and greediness rife in the whole political system.
