As with nearly everything in Sarajevo these days, you have to expect themes and issues of war to be represented.

We went for "Intimacy" exhibition and it was quite that - intimate.

The number of pieces isn't overwhelming in any way, but the details and backstories of them was more than enough to keep our full attention for 1-2 hours.

The price of admission isn't much and the place isn't overcrowded, so there's a lot of quiet time to ponder.

Definitely worth a visit, especially if the weather isn't on your side.

The permanent exhibition is on the third floor, only a couple of rooms, arranged by themes when I visited (landscape, interior/exterior etc). I was the only visitor and suspect it doesn’t get much recognition - a shame.

The gallery is interested and nice but average. On third level we saw the permanent exhibitions of the local paintings with some really good paintings and on the second level was a graphic exhibition. Ground level we did not visit .
It is a shame that the culture and also this small gallery do not receive enough money from government and local community. Europe and some other nations helped with donations, but it would be good to support the culture here more
After the Bosnian war they receive considerably less funding due to the failure of the government of Bosnia and Herzegovina to recognize the gallery as a national institution.[1] Entry fee is not much

Lovely gallery with a very friendly staff and with a nice overview of Bosnian art.

The building itself had also a nice atmosphere. A quiet place

A good collection of Bosnian impressionists, such as Gabrijel Jurkic, Beside that, there are some good envisaged exhibitions about the Bosnian war and vision of the artists about that war

Nice museum, just older. Exhibits are nice. But to allow smoking is just horrible--especially right now with tapestries on exhibit thanks to the British Council.

As an artist - and a tourist - I spend a lot of time visiting galleries and museums around the world. My visit to this gallery - housing an important collection of Bosnian art from last century and beyond was most disappointing. I dont think they were expecting any visitors today - I paid my minimal entry fee and was pointed to the stairs leading up to the gallery - they couldn't be bothered turning the lights on so the paintings were lit by poor light filtering in through overhead skylights and worst of all - in spite of 'no smoking' sign on her door, the gallery official was sitting in her office puffing away on a cigarette and filling the gallery with stinking smoke. I should have said something to her - but let it pass and retreated to the clean air outside. Interesting paintings though in an interesting city.

I must admit that I really wasn't expecting much from this modest gallery. It was my last day in Sarajevo and it was raining so I figured I'd make the trip. Now, I love a good art museum. Matter of fact, whenever I travel to a new city, one of the first things I put on my "places to see" list is the local art museum. I've been to major art museums in New York, Mexico City, Toronto, Bucharest and here in South Florida.
The Art Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina isn't "the Met" (few galleries in the world are) but I found it to be a very pleasant surprise.
The gallery opened in 1946, and over the years has collected pieces from the Communist Yugoslavian era, as well as post-civil war contemporary pieces. When I visited the gallery, there was an excellent exhibit called Ženskom rukom ("By Woman's Hand") which featured contributions of women painters and sculptors from Bosnia and Herzegovina. I also found their permanent collection of art to be quite interesting as well.
Alas, the Gallery has struggled with funding issues since the civil war and relies solely on donations and sponsors and a small entry fee (5 KM, about $2.80). That's a shame because this little gem of a museum is well worth the visit.

What a disappointment!

Ground floor had a couple of sculptures and a wall full of abstract paintings: a dot here, a horizontal line there, and a squiggly elsewhere!

Next floor up - more of the same! Blobs of black and blobs of white. Geometric designs that to an appreciative eye might have had some meaning.

My eyes were not appreciative.

The staff looked as bored as I felt.

The only 'excitement' in the entire place - for both me and the staff - occurred when I inadvertently set off the security alarm on my way up a wrong stairwell, still hoping to see some art!

And for this experience: 6 KM (€3)!

Give it a miss!

This gallery offers interesting shows, presently one showing regional art and artists. Although it is called a gallery, it is more of a museum; however, admission is free with donations accepted. It is worth paying a visit and supporting the arts. There was a section of the gallery devoted to children's drawings, which gives some flavor of what life is like in their eyes.
