- WITY TRAVELS179 contributionsCheck out day and night. We started off at the fountain famous for tourists getting a close encounter with what seems to be all of the pigeons in the city. These pigeons are no joke. There are a lot of them and they fly very low. This Sebilj fountain was constructed in 1891. There was another fountain further down that was built in 1754 but it was burned down in 1852. The term Sebilj means "road" but in this context it more likely refers to the path the water takes to reach the fountain or the path of charity to get the water to the people who really need it. This interpretation symbolizes how clerks would man this fountain and draw water only to give it to thirsty people for free.Visited March 2021Written March 18, 2021
- Susanne AFalun, Sweden1,251 contributionsLovely fountain 🙏❤️This fountsin is really beautiful 🙏❤️ and a central place in Sarajevo. So many pigeons here. There used to be hundreds of sebiljs (kiosk-shaped public fountains) in Sarajevo, but today the last one is found on Baščaršija Square, where it serves as a major symbol of the city. The origins of these fountains can be traced back to the Arabian Peninsula and the custom of building sebiljs was brought to Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Ottomans.Visited December 2021Traveled soloWritten December 2, 2021
- SnowyShastaPortland, Oregon1,907 contributionsCenter of the Turkish old townThe fountain itself is interesting to look at, and looks Turkish on its own. It is also situated in the center of the square which is in the center of that part of Old Town. You should definitely visit the Turkish section of town and walk through the small and narrow streets when you are in Sarajevo. The fountain itself is not necessarily a must-see, but you will almost certainly see it while you're in this part of town. It still works, too, so feel free to fill your water bottle while you're there!Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 5, 2023
- macedonboyGlasgow, United Kingdom176,650 contributionsCovered Ottoman FountainThe Sebilj is an Ottoman era fountain in the centre of Baščaršija Square. The fountain was built by Mehmed Pasha Kukavica in 1753, although it was relocated to its present location in 1891. An unusual feature of the fountain is the wooden covering like a wooden screen in the Ottoman style. I was told that visitors who drink water from this fountain will return to Sarajevo someday. I’m not going to test that out.Visited May 2023Written June 14, 2023

Nothing special, lots of birds surrounded and the same can be witnessed any other city/town/village.
Since it is rated a must-see place everyone does that ritual, we also visited.

Place with a lot of people and cafes where you can try the best Bosnian coffee. Also, very rich in culture what makes it interesting. And if you decide to visit it don't forget to go for some ćevapi.

It was a feeling of deja vu, as I saw practically identical Sebilj like this one in Bursa in Turkey. It was a feeling of meeting an old friend - only the one in Bursa is not positioned at such a beautiful square like is Bascarsija in Sarajevo.
