Bascarsija is Sarajevo's old bazaar and the historical and cultural center...

Bascarsija is Sarajevo's old bazaar and the historical and cultural center of the city. Bascarsija was built in the 15th century when Isa-Beg Isakovic founded the town. The word Bascarsija derives from the Turkish language. The word "bas" which is "bas" in Turkish literally means "head", in some contexts however also "primary", "main", "capital" and "carsija" which is "carsi" in Turkish means "bazaar" or "market". Due to the large fire in the 19th century, today Bascarsija is half the size that it once was.

Bascarsija is located on the north bank of the river Miljacka, in the municipality of Stari Grad. On Bascarsija there are several important historic buildings, such as the Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque and sahat-kula. Today Bascarsija is the major tourist attraction of Sarajevo.

Bascarshija is a major attraction with its bazaar stores. It's part of the old town where you'll find the mosques, orthodox church, cathedral and synagogue all within walking distance of each other. I recommend you take a guided historical tour of the city to see all the historically important sites because there are many! Also, most importantly, do not forget... More

Well worth the visit and also has some excellent bazaar shopping, food stalls and shops. The Bascarsija is a classic old area with narrow lanes and the central square.

Beautiful Place to spend the evening and click some memorable pics surrounded by pigeons. Do not forget to drink some water from the Bascarsija, where there is a saying who drink water from it will return back to the place again.

Centre square of the old town has pigeons everywhere! Corn is sold to anyone wanting to feed them. Surrounded by restaurants and near all the main attractions. A great place to wander around.

Very attractive and very nice place. It is like a must to visit if you are visiting Sarajevo. You can see ancient places like Gazi Husrev-beg Mosque, and other ancient mosques and churches. and you can find many good restaurants and do some shopping all over the old town.
