    Wonderful day touring with Mustafa
We did not take the cooking class, but we spent an excellent day touring with Mustafa. We visited various Olympic sights, the Tunnel of Hope, and Tito’s Bunker. We really appreciated him sharing his own personal and family’s harrowing experiences during the Siege. We spent the day talking politics, learning about his life, and he patiently and freely answered all of our questions. He is a gifted tour guide and truly a lovely human being (as well as a safe driver)! If you are interested in more than cooking lessons, please ask him about his availability to guide you around his beautiful country!

    Don’t miss this class!
This class was exceptionally fun and interesting. Our welcome was warm and genuine. The recipes were well chosen, satisfying to prepare and delicious to eat! Mersiha is an intuitive cook who clearly wanted us to learn and experience Bosnian culture at its best. I was impressed by her resourcefulness, wasting nothing but making dishes I can replicate at home. We were lucky enough to spend the following day with her husband, Mustafa, who took us to see Tito’s Bunker, 1984 Olympian sites and told us his very moving personal story at the Tunnel of Hope from the 1991-1995 war with Serbia. They are a wonderfully kind and interesting couple. You will be glad to meet them and learn from them.

Everyone should meet and cook with Mersiha!
We are a family of 5, with three teenage daughters. Obviously as every teenager my daughters were not really excited at a prospect of a cooking lesson ( I do drag them to cooking lessons abroad a lot because im a chef) but Mersiha and Mustafa were the most friendly and warm people and they made the afternoon just perfect! Girls loved the food we prepared, they were treated to the home made apple juice and berry juice from Mersiha’s garden! Most of the produce was from their garden as well! I could not recommend the experience enough! Thank you both for your hospitality and warm welcome as well as delicious food! Next time we will do a private tour with Mustafa! There is so much to see there! Wishing you all the best! Katarina, Simon, Lola, Nadia and Vicky xxx

Cooking with mersiha was great fun! She showed us how to make delicious burek, pita and stuffed vegetables.
But it's not only a great cooking class. Mersiha and Mustafa are so warm and welcoming people that you'll feel like cooking and dining with old friends.
We learnd much about bosnian history, culture, food and wine, the way of living and the fact that "promaha" (draft) is your worst enemy :p
Don't miss this amazing opportunity!

We spent a wonderful afternoon and evening at Mersiah and Mustafa‘s house, learning how to prepare some iconic Bosnian recipes. They are a wonderful couple, open, friendly and interesting and we shared the class with two very nice travellers from the UK and AUS.

What Mersiah showed us in the kitchen was a whole new look at cooking and food. She learned the traditional ways of preparing food from her mother as a child, who insisted she spend many days in the kitchen with her - as a way of keeping her inside and out of harms way during the war in Sarajevo.

It quickly became obvious that there are a lot of things which are done slightly differently in the Balkans. This started with the way in which she added water to a dough over her hand, giving a better and more direct control of the right amount of liquid, continued with grating onions instead of chopping (brilliant, why have we not thought of this?) and most definitely saw its highlight in the stretching of the dough into paper thin filo pastry. If we had not seen it done and then done it ourselves, we would consider it impossible.

Mersiah and Mustafa grow and produce almost everything they use and their lifestyle is at the same time steeped in tradition and ultra modern, as it is ecologically sustainable, healthy and mindful.

We would recommend this to anyone who enjoys food and cooking and who is looking to learn more about Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina and its people.

I decided to try some cooking classes on recent trip to the Balkans? Found this class - turned out amazingly.
Communication with host was easy and quick. Even arranged pick up from downtown to their beautiful home on the hill overlooking the city.
Greeted like a long expected guest with wonderful appetizers and drinks. Then we got down to business. We made stuffed peppers, onions, and chard leaves for the first dish. Then 2 kinds of pita pies - meat and potatoes.
Good amount of hands on work but still plenty of time to visit and relax. Our dinner was tasty and plentiful. Great conversations and of course plenty to drink. I personally don’t drink alcohol but fresh juices were available.
This was one of my favorite evenings during the month long trip. Quality class put on by Mersiha. Don’t hesitate to sign up for this amazing experience.

Mersiha and Mustafa invite you into their home for a very personal experience that is not to be missed! Mersi is an exceptional cook - her burek is 100 times better than any of the many other burek we tried (on a daily basis) over the course of 2 weeks. I am slowly perfecting my phyllo skills (which, I have happily discovered, are transferable to apple strudel!), although my burek are sadly missing the Vegeta! Mersi's stuffed vegetables are firmly on my weekly menu - we absolutely love them!

More than that, Mersi and Mustafa are incredible hosts who clearly enjoy meeting people, drinking wine and chatting about anything and everything. They are happy to share their stories and experiences of life in Sarajevo with you if you wish, which we were incredibly grateful for.

We also took Mustafa's photography and Tunnel guided tours, which significantly enhanced our experience of Sarajevo generally and our knowledge of the history and circumstances surrounding that incredible tunnel.

Thank you so much Mersi and Mustafa! We hope to see you again on our travels.

We had a wonderful and very delicious evening cooking with Mersiha and Mustafa.

They welcomed us into their home high on a hill with a beautiful view overlooking Sarajevo. We began with appetizers of Bosnian cheeses and cured meats and freshly made savory doughnuts we could slather with kalmak and homemade red pepper and eggplant paste. Mersiha and Mustafa described what we would be cooking and we all got acquainted (I was there with my son who is interning with a Bosnian ngo and one of his friends).
Under Mersiha’s cheerful and patient guidance, we learned how to make dolmas and laprak – onions, peppers and a swiss chard-like leaf stuffed with spiced, minced meat and rice. (I have successfully recreated these at home!)

Next we learned how to make Burek(a spiral meat pie) and Krompirusa (a spiral potato and onion pie). This involved learning to make super thin phyllo dough by hand - amazingly we succeeded because of Mersiha's great instruction and coaching accompanied by a lot of laughter.
Most of the food we cooked with came from Mersiha and Mustafa's garden or orchards and frozen or preserved last summer and fall. We were so lucky to enjoy their hard earned bounty.

We love finding cooking lessons or classes when we travel – both to learn how to cook local foods and to have the opportunity to meet and talk with local residents in order to get a deeper understanding of the country we are visiting.

Our evening with Messiah and Mustafa more than fulfilled both of these hopes.

This was definitely a highlight of our 2 month trip in the Balkans!

First of all, THE FOOD. I'm drooling thinking about the dolma, japrak, and burek that we learned to make. Come hungry!

Second, I need to emphasize the burek. We tried burek in many different countries throughout our trip, but none compares to what we made under the tutelage of Mersiha. Straight out of the oven with fresh ingredients from their backyard garden - this can't be beat!

Lastly, Mustafa and Mersiha are amazing people that felt like old friends, which made the atmosphere welcoming from the start and overall an unforgettable experience.

As a bonus, Mustafa is a skilled photographer and sent us a set of pictures that he took throughout the class while we were busy focusing on the food :)
