A beautiful church
This beautiful church is located in the city centre and is a very short walk away from Skanderberg Square. I love the golden doors at the entrance. No surprise to hear that it’s beautifully decorated inside. The dome ceiling is particularly impressive. It is free to enter and you don’t need a lot of time to see everything. There has been some scaffolding inside for a while now but this doesn’t take away from the atmosphere.

Very beautiful inside and out
This church is just around the corner from the square on the main street. It is not only beautiful outside but the interior is a definite must see. It is richly designed there are priests inside and a prayer room you can use if you want to pray. It is tuly a lovely chuch.

Modern Day Cathedral
Really nice orthodox Cathedral located near main square, you don’t see many newish modern day cathedrals in Europe. Inside also nicely done with architecture and art work. Certainly worth the effort to see while in Tirana.

A beautiful church

This beautiful church is located in the city centre and is a very short walk away from Skanderberg Square. I love the golden doors at the entrance. No surprise to hear that it’s beautifully decorated inside. The dome ceiling is particularly impressive. It is free to enter and you don’t need a lot of time to see everything. BYZANTINE INFLUENCES

As its name implies, this Eastern Christian Church is not subject to the authority of an outside patriarch or archbishop. Its gleaming white exterior with veritable minarets and its dome will harken you back to Ottoman times. The interior is undergoing some renovation but its ceiling is striking for its colours. Most of the church was roped off but you could still get a good look at the iconostasis separating the nave from the sanctuary. It was a smaller interior than I would have imagined from the outside. In a real irony, it is opposite the House of Leaves. I did hear the bells at 0730 Sunday calling the faithful to prayer.

very photogenic church

As with everything else, the church is within easy walking distance. there is a tall tower next to the church so you need a wide angle lens to get the tower. The church building itself is worth getting a photograph.

Modern cathedral complex in Tirana center

Since 2012 this new Eastern Orthodox religious complex is part of central Tirana. The cathedral and 46m high bell tower attract most attention, but there are other buildings like a chapel, amfitheater and lecture hall. The interior of the cathedral is richly decorated.

It is estimated that 20 to 25% of Albanians are Orthodox Christian. The autocephaly (form of autonomy) of their church is recognized by other Eastern Orthodox churches.

This building, architecturally and ideologically massive, is an example of an orthodox church, in a country keen to reassert, after the fall of the iron curtain, its religious identity.

We refrain to judge on its aesthetics, but it is worth a look for its unusual character.

A modern Orthodox Church and not quite finished inside, the murals are still being completed. It’s still a beautiful church inside and great to hear its bells ringing around the town.
