Whilst quite challenging in the heat and humidity, this is neverthless well worth a visit, as the forest is so beautiful and crater of Lagoa Amelia so interesting. As it can be combined with a walk round the botanical gardens, which are somewhat neglected in spite of the best efforts of the small, but enthusiastic staff, it is a must do. At least the altitude makes the air a little cooler!

Easy trekking and lovely nature,
it is going uphill but not to much and can be slippery during rainy season.
Make sure you take some anti repellants.
Book a guide, its worth it!

The best of going to Lagoa Amélia is the trek itself, rather than the final destination.
The trail can be followed with the help of any GPS application (lilke Wikiloc or Maps.me) so there is no need of hiring a guide.
But be very careful when entering the 'lake'. We didn't dare afte a day with tropical rainfalls. The soil looked very unstable all around. So we took picture without really walking through the 'lake'.
To sum up: very recommendable activity to discover the green fores of Sao Tomé.
