Pico cão grande is an amazing land mark. It is the tallest volcanic plug( google it) in the world. It sits majestically in the center of the southern part of the island amd got it's name(the big dog peak) because it resembles a dog staring up at you when seen from above( google earth will show you). It is an undisturbed natural land mark and the closest you can get to it by car is about 3 km. It is surrounded by a dense impemnetrable equatorial rainforest and although some have claimed to have climbed it I have my doughts about the veracity of such claims. It is taller than the empire state building.

In the way that Devil's Tower in Wyoming is out of the ordinary, so is Pico Cao Grande. It is a volcanic core (like Devil's Tower) that got left behind after erosion. Easily seen from the roadside, there is not a marked viewpoint. Just pick one of the spots that is most easily accessible at the side of the road. Often shrouded in mist and with the sun ever at a bad angle, it is still quite fascinating to see.

We saw this rock while traveling back to the capital from the South. It looked high and impressive.
We later found out from a guide that only one tourist, a German ever climbed this rock. We, of course, had no plans to climb it, but it was nice to have a good view of it.

Sao Tome doesn't have many touristic places to visit so nature is the best thing that you can admire, which doesn't mean that it is not worthly.

Pico Cao Grande i a needle-shape volcanic plug peak, which is known to be climbed only three times by expert climbers. It is situated in the Obo National Park and is 668 meter high above the sea level.

It is usually covered by the clouds that are always in the south of the island. When you get the first glimpse at it you cannot avoid exclaiming a surprise. It's really breathtaking. A wonderful of the nature.

This is, of course, a MUST SEE in Sao Tome & Principe. You can decide if you just want to see it as a drive-by photo opportunity or if you like to visit this amazing site with us or any other tour company.

One of nature’s most impressive high-rises, no doubt. A fantastic and impressive view from far away, but have no desire to go any closer.

If you are considering climbing it please do some research first. It is apparently very slippery because of all the mosses that cover much of the rock, surrounded by a thick jungle of giant ferns and infested with snakes which thrive in the humid climate and inhabit the needle itself.

Still very impressive to look at. We managed to catch a few good pictures considering that a blanket of mist usually cloaks the column.

What a grea area after you crossed big palm oil plantages. Would not do it again, because the streets there are terrible. From the city we had more than 2.5 hours to Porto Allegre

Although you can only see it from the road it is worth to drive to the places where you can admire it better. It is a very interesting thin and very high rock formation. Enjoy!

This is a great place to stop and get a good photo from the main road. If you get a chance, you can even hike closer towards it. This is impossible not to see if you are traveling to the south.
