Sunday Mass time is 8am, no later masses. Vigil mass at 6pm on Saturday evening. Doors stayed open, no one wears masks, air conditioners running to keep things cool. The choir is so beautiful and there was a very talented violinist who added to the beauty. I didn’t understand a word the priest was saying (French) but the way he delivered his sermon was captivating. Just going for the choir was worth it.

We always make a point of vsiting the local religious building. In this case the cathedral in downtown Paeete. It is a strking but yet simple building on the inside and out, and we were as always able to light a candle and spend a few moments in our own thoughts. But there was a significant group of homeless groups both directly inside and outside the building. Many of ehom were drunk/drinking, this sadly put an unease amongst us, that we very rarley exoerience. They were no bother at all, but there was just an edge to the atmosphere. I totally understand that any building of worship is open to all, especially in time of need, bit there appeared to be no visible function or support from the church itself.

Just a short walk fron the Municipal Market sits this delightful little church. Not sure I think of it as a cathedral as, in my mind, those are bigger buildings. Nevertheless, the architecture is delightful, the stained glass beautiful and the people friendly. Wife and I sat for about a half hour soaking it all in.

This church is very endearing. Nothing special, just the location is fabulous, the view from far is unmistakable.
If you can, just go there for 6pm for mass. Or sometimes around 5 you can catch a local gospel rehearsal. Magic....
or maybe it's just me because it embodies my whole childhood...

Stepping into this lovely old cathedral was a step back in time, cool and quiet. Built in 1867 it retains the ambiance of many masses celebrated here. There is some recent artwork here as well. A mosaic of Jesus has thousands of tesserae to create a soulful face. The fairly recent Way of the Cross depictions reflect the indigenous population as well. This is a peaceful spot to step away from the heat and busy streets.

We walked by this church a couple of times but unfortunately didn’t go in.
From the outside it is quite attractive and an interesting juxtaposition from the world around it.

Seems small for a cathedral. Very well kept building for it's age. I think it was built in the late 1800's. Beautiful stained glass.

Interesting to view from the outside. There is notice board in the front near the road that is worth reading to know what to see inside

Quiet and serene inside. Nice stained glass windows to observe. Sat down for a while after a long walk and enjoyed the peace.

What are the pictures on each side of the entrance to the church
Written January 24, 2019
All the windows are stain glass. The majority are of angels and saints.
I’ll go to my original post and see if I can attach two of my photos.
