We took the Terevau ferry from Papeete for a day trip to Moorea. One thing to note is that there are separate terminals at the ferry for Aremiti vs. Terevau. However, the Terevau terminal services both Terevau ferries - both the "regular" version, which takes about 30 minutes, and the Terevau Piti, which takes about 50 minutes.

The entire process (arriving, buying a ticket, and boarding) took only about 5 minutes, as there was no line. I'd recommend coming 15-20 minutes before the ferry is scheduled to leave, just in case there is one.

We ended up taking the Terevau Piti back from Moorea to Papeete because the timing worked out better. Cold and hot food and drinks were available for purchase on both versions.

Terevau is the slower, less expensive transport ferry between Papeete and Moorea. It is slightly less expensive than the Aremiti 6 and was a nice trip, but I much prefer the Aremiti 6, which is cleaner, faster, much less crowded, better air conditioning (which is huge when it is hot and very humid) and they offer a 60+ senior discounted rate of 950 xpf so it ended up being cheaper for us than the Terevau. We took both the Terevau and the Aremiti 6 and can say that we much prefer the Aremiti 6 (not to be confused with the Aremiti ferry that is much older and slower). The only downside to the Aremiti 6 is that it travels much less frequently than the Terevau, but in our mind it is worth scheduling around their departure times. The difference is like traveling in the back of coach on an airline (the Terevau) or going in premium economy (the Aremiti 6). Both will get you there - not a big difference in price, but one is a bit cheaper while the other is a much nicer trip.

Thank you for your appreciation of the Terevau. However, for more complete information, if the Aremiti 6 is faster from one pass to the other one, it is the same time from dock to dock (25 mn)... And if you were lucky to get a senior discount with Aremiti 6, which is surprising because discount prices do not apply on foreigners, only for residents, they have a higher price for non residents, which is not the case with the Terevau. Terevau is sure older but you'll have a more local environment and atmosphere. Terevau is an older boat but our staff is sure trying its best to please the passengers and make them feel welcome. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.

The Terevau ferries are consistently on time and an inexpensive way to get between islands -- for tourists and locals. Plenty of seating indoors (air conditioned) and never crowded. Snack bar that offers beer, coffee, sodas, and snacks. Able to go out on deck as well.

My wife and I were going to fly to Papeete from Moorea but decided to take the Terevau Ferry instead. Very happy we did as it was not only much less expensive ($60 for flight per person compared with $11 (1 160 XPF)) to take the ferry, the only flight left at 3pm and boat left at 12:15 (several departures per day). So we were able to enjoy our one day at the Intercontinental Hotel near the airport much more than if we arrived at 4pm. Was not easy finding taxi from ferry and baggage pick up area (at opposite end of terminal - so turn right if boat is behind you) but once we did was a quick 15 minute ride to Intercontinental and cost about 2 500 ($24). We arrived at Ferry port in Moorea a little more than an hour before departure time. Our taxi (3 200 XPF from Hilton) pulled up and our bags were immediately taken. I had purchased and printed our tickets online before we left so the hour was more than enough time. In fact, too much time. You can purchase ticket at the dock and there are no reservations. First come first serve. Our Ferry had plenty of room so I don't think space is ever a problem. I am not sure if the same applies to vehichles. There are a few fruit & smoothie stands in the terminal but we went across the street to minimart in gas station to buy some snacks (prices reasonable). Boat ride was 25 minutes. Sea's were calm so comfortable ride, but ouside was extremely windy (went outside to take some photo's). I chose Terevau (red ferry) over Aremiti (white ferry) because their site was in English (French as well) and it was easy to navigate (you request ticket's and they will send e-mail back for payment) compared to Aremiti which is only in French (at least I couldn't find English version). Plenty of seats inside and interior was clean. A pleasant experience.

Terevau was fast and reliable during my trip from Tahiti to Moorea round trip. Just make sure if you are planning bring a rental car to Moorea from Tahiti, book in advance because the spots for cars are very limited. It’s very easy to follow. Download the tickets on your wallet pass and they’ll scan it as you enter the gates. Also if you’re bringing luggage make sure you put it together downstairs in Tahiti with others. You will see it. And pick it up as you exit after they bring out.

2 companies operate ferries to Moorea and they alternate their times so there's usually one going every 40 minutes or so. Because of our post-flight COVID testing, we weren't sure how long it would take so didn't buy tickets online from 1 operator or the other. You can walk right up to the ticket counter, its basically 90 seconds from getting out of the taxi to when you are sitting upstairs, ticket in hand, waiting to board.

Ferry took about 30 minutes. This one did not have outdoor seating, which was fine as it was raining that morning.

Took the Terevau ferry from Papeete to Moorea. Found it very easy to buy a ticket at the ferry terminal. The baggage drop-off was a little sketchy, but our bags made it ok (pick up and drop off are on a "honors system" so to speak). The ferry itself was a bit worn, but acceptable. The ferry left right on time and arrived on time. Baggage delivery was prompt. We found it odd that there were no safety announcements on what to do in case of emergency. Also, the air conditioning wasn't very good and the seating area was hot!

Thank you for your comment and rating. The safety announcement was shown at the begining of the trip on TV screens.

Best and fastest way to get to Moorea from Papeete. Super fast ferry, I was amazed at the speed. 17 nautical miles covered in 30 minutes. Flies through the waves. No frills, free seating. Hop on, hop off. Got our tickets on the website. No reservation required, just the actual tickets. Makes for a fun and quick crossing.

Five of us took the Terevau ferry from Papeete to Moorea in August 2016. As of that time, Terevau and Aremiti/Aremiti 5 were the two ferries/companies that ran between both islands. As a traveller, I suspect that both companies/ferry boats are relatively similar - both get you to/from each island pretty quickly - both take about 45 minutes or so; both use the same ferry terminals, ticket booths, etc... Each company/ferry runs an alternating schedule, so which one you take likely depends on the specific time of your travel. It took a ~15 minute cab ride to get from Papeete airport in Faa'a down to the Papeete ferry docks; every taxi driver on Moorea and in Papeete know where the ferry docks are! You can buy tickets online ahead of time (each company has a website), or at the ticket desk by the pier. I guess its possible that they might sell out tickets if you wait until last minute, but again, this is a really big boat, so I suspect that is somewhat uncommon for most departure times. We got out of the taxi, checked in our luggage, got in line and bought our tickets for Terevau, all literally 15 minutes before the ferry departed...we even had time to buy a loaf of French bread in the shop right outside the entrance turnstiles - they are clearly set up to handle lots of people quickly - no problem! The Terevau ferry is huge - it can seat several hundred people. It has a little snack bar onboard (our first croissants in french polynesia!), nice comfy chairs, and several wide screen TVs showing a variety of channels. We went up on deck for the end of the trip, to see the entrance to Vai'are harbor in Moorea. When you pull in to Vai'are, there are lots of taxis available; however, we found out the hard way that both ferry companies tend to use different (but adjacent) piers in Vai'are; those piers are separated by a little terminal building, which can hide them, so if you are meeting someone or waiting for a taxi to pick you up, it helps to be specific as to which exact ferry you are waiting at (otherwise, your ride may be waiting for you 100 yards down the pier, unable to see you standing there!)

Both ferry companies are clearly used by tourists and locals alike. Overall, this is a fast, inexpensive and really easy way to get between the two islands - very nice!

We were on a cruise ship and then over to Moorea for a few days. No need to book a transfer from the ship to the ferry as they are right beside each other!
