The Beachcomber building is beautiful. There are some pricey souvenirs but many were items we hadn't seen anywhere else and we did purchase quite a few things. The cafe out the back is very average selling sandwiches, salads and coffee.

Absolutely gorgeous building. Loved the building alone let alone some beautiful artwork. Really lovely local artist pieces. Very reasonably priced pearls too and a lovely looking cafe out the back.

We have bought from this shop before. Own by the bergman's which have the main pearl shop downtown. This shop has a very nice selection. We bought a couple of gift items from this shop. We have been coming to raro for many years and know who is honest and reliable and who isn't. We took another couple from the resort there and to a few other reputable shops. In the end this is the shop where they bought their piece of black pearl jewelry. When we take people around we want to know when we get home that we will still be friends and that they don't get a nasty surprise that the piece is garbage or not as sold to them..that does happen in raro just like other places. I know they only sell cook island pearls or if they aren't they will tell you. Honesty is key and this shop is. P.s. A friend on the island just told me a story about a couple that were sold quite a large pearl and were sold it as a "b" grade and paid $900 They ask my friend what grade it was and he said well here is the grading chart you tell me. It wasn't on the chart. They took it back to get a refund but they wouldn't give one. I have no problems buying lessor quality pearls if they have nice color or pretty I often don't even ask the grade if one speaks to me, but I do have a problem if you specifically are told you are buying one thing and are taken advantage of and don't get what you were paying for. If you are paying more than a couple hundred dollars go to reputable establishment and that doesn't mean just a shop on the Main Street. T

The concept of picking out your own pearl to be put in your chosen setting is intriguing. Problem was that I was charged 2.5 times more for the setting than another more reputable jewelry store in town sold the exact same setting. I was able to get a refund but had to prove the setting was the same by buying the other one too. This was a hassle I did not need and very stressful. My advice is to price shop before buying. Also be advised this store is affiliated with Bergman & Sons so be careful in both stores.

I went here with a friend who was shopping around for a pearl and on the second visit ended up buying one myself. Staff were very helpful and they had a large range of ready made pieces along with pearls you could pick yourself and get put into a setting (which was ready to collect the next day). Range of prices for all budgets. I prefer unique items and didn't want to spend much so went for the 'not perfect' pearls at $19 NZ each. Found one I liked and had sterling silver setting attached (no chain as had one at home I could use).
Do recommend to have a look at all the shops in town (we did this and went back for second visits) and don't forget to check out the Saturday morning market also which had pearl stands as I saw a number of reasonalby priced pearls.

I needed a less expensive gift, that still looked custom. I have been in the Beachcomber market several times over the years... so I had a feeling I would be able to put together a gift on a budget. The friend I was buying for had seen a baroque pearl / rubber neckpiece I have worn for years... her and many others commented on it. When I went into the shop... I was pleasantly surprised to see they had these settings and for quite reasonable... $29.00 for silver!!! You can also buy gold... but I was on a budget. Then I picked a nice pearl (I could have bought a cheaper pearl) and for $95 TOTAL! I walked out with an amazing gift!! It cost about $50 less than the one I bought in town several years ago in a shop just a couple doors down from the foodland grocery and this one was much nicer! You won't find a wow gift like this in the Saturday market! At the market the closest you will find is a pearl on a string which are ok and I have bought (for cheap gift but looks cheap also) but not a wow gift like this... I just gave it to the friend for her birthday... and she never thought in a million years this would be her gift! I feel cheeky that it didn't cost near what she thinks... but it was just good shopping, great style and pizzaz! That particular setting is on my radar for the next time we are back on the island. It looks equally nice on men and women.
This is the only place on the island you can find this setting and it is a knockoff of the Bergman signature chokers that are $$$$. I have one of those pricey ones and love it but if you can't afford and need a budget piece as I did I love these!!!!
P.S. when I picked up the piece I checked the setting everything was clean and neat... I do find sometimes when I bring the rubber pieces home to a dry non humid climate (from anywhere in the world) I think rubber shrinks and the glue lets loose where it attaches to the clasp but I just put a little glue in and good as new... I use 2.5 tonne epoxy and never a problem again...

Three of us purchased made to order jewellery from this store. The staff were very helpful and attentive and they had our 8 pieces of jewellery made for us in the 24 hours that they advised.

We did not check the settings to see if we had the correct fittings for our earrings until we got home to NZ the next day. That is when we realised that they did not look like the fittings we believe we had selected. What followed was numerous emails with the sales director. With the end result being they disagreed with us and there was nothing we could do as we were no longer in Rarotonga.

Two of our necklaces we purchased also fell apart (one hadn't even been worn) and these had to be returned for repair. Which they turned around quickly, but it was still very disappointing and made us wonder about the quality of the workmanship.

Beachcomber gallery in Avarua was a little difficult to find. People were sending us to the Beachcomber Resort. Others had no idea where this place was. I saw this gallery while driving by and by chance decided to stop and found it. There are a number of small shops there. One shop sells black pearls and jewellery another sells ceramics and plates and things like that. There is also a small restaurant there. We went to buy the dancing girls done by Judith Kunzel. I ended up with 2. They were around $150-250NZD. Next time I go to Raro I want the black and white shells that she sketches. This is a good place to go through and pick up a nice gift to take home.

We had taken the local bus from our hotel to the market, which none of us really felt 100% like going to. Our minds were quickly changed seeing the variety of stalls and products to buy. Great for souvenir shopping, and the baking items were not to be missed (date/coconut scones, mmmmm). Local fruit and vegetables, fresh fish, coffee, wood carvings, music CD's, pearls, pareas, T-shirts is just the start. Locals are friendly and not at all aggressive sales people. you may be handed pamphlets for different tours etc. as you walk through the market.

The art and pearls are beautiful, the cafe has great muffins and coffee. The one staff at the pearl market was so friendly and helpful but the other (a non-cook islander) was quite rude and couldn't give us the time of day. We did however buy a drawing and the other ladies politeness made up for the arrogant one.
