They Had a Pharmacy!
Feb 2020
We stopped here on our cruise-ship booked tour of Montevideo. It is a beautiful iron-constructed market with a wide variety of stores (including agricultural products). We were happy that they had a pharmacy where I could pick up a muscle relaxant recommended by our ship's doctor for my wife's pulled muscle injury. I had earlier tried to get this in Argentina without success and our ship could not provide it.
Mercado Agricola Montevideo was declared a National Historic Monument in 1999 and is well worth a visit. In addition to the pharmacy and agricultural products, there are several restaurants and lots of tourist shops for souvenirs.

More than a rest stop
Mar 2020
Our tour guide presented Mercado Agricola Montevideo (MAM)  to us as a place to do some shopping and use a restroom before we went on to our next stop.

Bad tour guide.

This is one of Montevideo's largest agricultural markets, and it is the last of the city's iron-built markets -- the others being Mercado de la Abundancia in the city center and  Mercado del Puerto in Cuidad Vieja (see my review, "See it on foot or by tour van"). MAM's beautiful ironwork makes for nice atmosphere and some good photos.

Construction of this market began in 1906. It opened in 1913 and has been expanded twice, in 1929 and in 1945. It was declared a National Historic Monument in 1999.

Today, this seems less a farmer's market and more of indoor mall with shops and restaurants. It's still fun, though, to see the fruits and vegetables, local handicrafts, ice cream shops and restaurants cooking meat as it revolves around hot coals.

Plan to visit
Feb 2020
More food court/restaurant than mercado. Lots of options to choose from some of the restaurants have second storey seating. We ate at Mastra Craft Brewery ( on the right as you enter). Took advantage of their chivito (steak sandwich) and beverage special (two orders for app $15 Cdn). Spend some time visiting the mercado especially if you look taking photos!

They Have the MEATS!
Jan 2020
Was a fabulous bunch of restaurants with any kind of meat imaginable grilling over hot wood coals. We struggled trying to decide where to eat as each spot looked better than the next! First world problem, I know.
Also lots and lots of souvenir shops and other kinds of eye candy.
Definitely worth a stroll around.

Now it has varioues shops, different kinds of merchandise,, to buy, to have lunch, to have tea. there are also shows - not now of course - open during the day.
very nicely done and beautiful constructed back in the old days.

A thrill for the senses!
Jan 2020
This wonderful old marketplace gives you a real feel for the local cuisine. It is full of small eateries, each with its own blazing wood fire in the center, cooking everything from beef to pork to chicken to sausages to vegetables and much more. Sit on a stool, smell the smoke, take in the sounds, and enjoy the tastes of the local cuisine!

Great food. Great fun

It’s loud but worth it. Some of the beef cuts are enormous but they offer 1/2 portions. Some meat, some wine, some conversation.

Smaller Market
Feb 2020
I found best price for souvenirs here. There is a little stand that sells them. A good place to buy fresh fruit and there are restaurants. It is a small market but it has a little bit of everything.

Clean, uncrowded, and quality items at the market
Feb 2020
Visiting this market sort of reminded us of the Grand Market in Budapest, but this one was probably cleaner, less crowded, and had more higher end quality goods, along with the meat and vegitable markets you would expect. We always enjoy these kind of markets, and while there were certainly tourists around, there also did seem to be alot of locals, so it wasn't all tourist junk.
