It's a real mix of vendors and products, but it's well worth a visit to get a taste of Montevideo. There are also some very good restaurants in the market -- among a wide range of choices. There are souvenirs that tend to have prices somewhat below what you would pay in the Center, Old Town, or Port Market. While this market is a bit out of the way (that simply means not within easy walking distance of the center of town), nonetheless, it is well worth a visit.

It is a nice building but not a cheap market. Prices are as high as in Canada, even higher on some products. The people shopping there are not the average people. Something like St. Lawrence Market in Toronto as a comparison.

Yes, the stores are cleaner, brighter and busier but it is also far from the centre and other than restaurants and a few expensive shops there is not much else to see.
It is open late, I got there myself around 8 pm and barely found parking.

If you have time, yes, go, but I cant say I find this place to make the top 10 in Montevideo as advertised.

THis is a building from many years ago, used to be a Market where people went to buy all different types of food.
Now it has varioues shops, different kinds of merchandise,, to buy, to have lunch, to have tea. there are also shows - not now of course - open during the day.
very nicely done and beautiful constructed back in the old days.
One can really be there for various hours.
enjoy!!

Our tour guide presented Mercado Agricola Montevideo (MAM)  to us as a place to do some shopping and use a restroom before we went on to our next stop.

Bad tour guide.

This is one of Montevideo's largest agricultural markets, and it is the last of the city's iron-built markets -- the others being Mercado de la Abundancia in the city center and  Mercado del Puerto in Cuidad Vieja (see my review, "See it on foot or by tour van"). MAM's beautiful ironwork makes for nice atmosphere and some good photos.

Construction of this market began in 1906. It opened in 1913 and has been expanded twice, in 1929 and in 1945. It was declared a National Historic Monument in 1999.

Today, this seems less a farmer's market and more of indoor mall with shops and restaurants. It's still fun, though, to see the fruits and vegetables, local handicrafts, ice cream shops and restaurants cooking meat as it revolves around hot coals.

Was a fabulous bunch of restaurants with any kind of meat imaginable grilling over hot wood coals. We struggled trying to decide where to eat as each spot looked better than the next! First world problem, I know.
Also lots and lots of souvenir shops and other kinds of eye candy.
Definitely worth a stroll around.

More food court/restaurant than mercado. Lots of options to choose from some of the restaurants have second storey seating. We ate at Mastra Craft Brewery ( on the right as you enter). Took advantage of their chivito (steak sandwich) and beverage special (two orders for app $15 Cdn). Spend some time visiting the mercado especially if you look taking photos!

Came here around mid afternoon and had a fantastic steak with salad at one of the less pretentious places called Don Garcia. The steak was excellent, personal attention given to how we would like it, very friendly people, and then a couple of musos dropped by…. What more could you want?

I found best price for souvenirs here. There is a little stand that sells them. A good place to buy fresh fruit and there are restaurants. It is a small market but it has a little bit of everything.

The restaurant we ate at was very good, was expecting a little bit more but was definitely worth going too. We had a delicious lunch and was nice to check out a few local items. A nice craft beer bar too.

The newly opened Mercado Agricola de Montevideo (José L. Terra 2220) is a delightful addition to Montevideo. This building, in an historic barrio of Montevideo, is a market featuring fruits and vegetables, meats, poultry and fish, cheeses, a wide variety of special foods, arts, cafés, restaurants, food court, and much more. The building is huge with soaring steel spans supporting a roof sheathed in wood on the inside. The stalls and shops are tasteful and functional; the walking aisles are wide. Even parking immediately adjacent to the building is adequate. MAM is everything it should be.

We went today, mostly to see this new addition. We don´t live in Montevideo, so it is an outing. Sadly it is too far to visit for regular shopping. We bought fruits and vegetables, all very competitively priced. We also bought some bottles of a favourite wine that was on sale in one shop. And, we also had a beer.

The beer was not just any old beer, but was just one of ten different on-tap offerings at Chopería Mastra. Mastra make crafted artisan beers ("cerveza artesanal"). There are some bottled offerings too. However, today, I had to pick from one of these ten: Belgian Blond Ale, Pale Ale, Golden Ale, Strong Golden Ale, IPA, Amber Ale, Del Mercado, Scottish Ale, American Stout, or Malta. Wow!

I chose Del Mercado, which was an amber beer flavoured with apples and cinnamon. It smells of cinnamon ("aroma fuerte a canela"). I have never tasted anything like this. I liked it. Just nine more visits to Mercado Agricola de Montevideo (or maybe less if I have an extra beer each time) and I will have to write another report, just on these beers.

Go to MAM.
