This museum (and the museum that shares the same prison grounds -- a Natural History museum, I think it was) isn't near other museums. It's a 20- or 30-minute walk from the center. But, as other reviewers said, it's a unique place that's well worth...More

Walking around a partially-restored prison to see contemporary art exhibits was very worthwhile. Some of the work displayed was from Spanish regional museums and the unique layout was done well. Glad I stumbled upon this space. Worth a visit.

The interior of the converted prison is as much an attraction as the art it contains. The cells, stairways, and halls have been converted into spaces for art to be displayed and for artists to work. The art itself was attractive and at a high...More

There is never an admission to this museum, set in a partially restored prison. Uruguay partnered with Spain in creating this unique venue. The prison walls are left intact. The exterior covered with amazing graffiti. The individual exhibitions are deftly curated in former prison cells....More

The building is a former prison, mid-renovation, and it shows. In a less than interesting area. Very striking building, though. The exhibitions were pretty average, I thought, but then I'm not the world's biggest contempory art fan. I suspect your visit here will be completely...More

Though the art exhibits were interesting during my visit, what really makes this place worth the trip is the building within which it is located. Walking the grounds of the former prison and seeing the cells within is a fascinating experience. They are open on...More

Imagine a prison that now it is space for celebrating beauty and promoting art. Great exhibits and very friendly and helpful staff. In my next trip to Montevideo I will visit again.
