Ciudad Vieja
About
This “Old City” by the harbor retains remnants of the past, like iron gates and colonial street lamps, and, with antique shops, museums and cafes, it’s a great place for browsing.

The old city is very safe and quite walkable. In fact, one must walk it to truly see it. We did take a city tour, which was nice and took us to places too far to walk to. However, when I later walked from the cruise port to Independence Plaza and back, I really felt that I saw the city. The streets are narrow and many are pedestrian-only. Just do it!

Montevideo is an exceptionally easy place to wander around and there's no better place to do in than in the old city. Even is you make a wrong turn and think you're "lost", within two blocks you're back on track and can easily find your way back.

The old city is wonderful, with beautiful architecture, small parks and little side streets worth exploring. Yes, there is graffiti and yes there is garbage...but frankly, no more than any other large city center in North America. The area is perfectly safe (obviously, be aware of your surroundings and remember, this is a large city, so there are pick pockets), but again, we had no problems nor did anyone on our ship of 500+ people.

Definitely take a stroll through the area and enjoy the setting. It's great and really captures to spirit of the city and country.

Sadly the city and surrounding area including parks, streets and the beach area are covered in litter. I was so disappointed I really couldn’t enjoy the city as all I could see was plastic bottles and cigarette packets and butts everywhere. What is wrong with people why can’t they take their litter home or use the bins. Sadly this is a reflection of todays mentality to just chuck your crap out of the car window or anywhere else. I travel a lot and it’s one thing that really upsets me, so Montevideo clean up please.

We stayed in a hotel in the heart of the old city, which made for a wonderful opportunity to stroll the area at various times of day. There are multiple parks and pedestrian only areas, which made walking nice, although there did appear to be road access to most locations, so you did have to look for cars.

This part of the city is very pretty, with a good number of old buildings and small churches, and we felt quite safe walking to and from the port, even with luggage (we departed via the ferry).

Everyone tries to take a picture of this gate or doorway to the old city. Ciudad Vieja means old city and this is where many tours will drop you. Right around the corner from this gate is the Solis Theatre and behind the gate is the Plaza Matriz. You are also quite close to the Metropolitan Cathedra.
There is plenty to see in Old Town.

Montevideo is fast losing much of its historic architecture. Fortunately, there are many old buildings still standing in the old section of the city. Only the economic impetus of tourism will help to preserve Montevideo's architectural heritage, so you need to take time to visit what is currently left.

If you have never been to Uruguay ,it should be on your bucket list.Beautiful city especially the old part of the city,Ciudad Vieja.
Excellent restaurants and their open fire cooked meats are to die for.Uruguay is one of the countries with excellent meats mostly free range.
The old part of the city still has the beautiful architecture of the days of it's formation .I am from Canada and found pricing very reasonable mostly between 80-90 % more economical for all services ,food lodging and travel.Very safe and quiet place to visit.

Just returned from 5 hours in the old city and will return tomorrow. Best to go about 10:00 am. Went to the Andes museum which tells the story of the crash in 1972- such a sad story. Had a very tasty lunch on an outdoor terrace. Visited the Canadian embassy- nothing to see or do there. Looking forward to tomorrow.

We started out at the pier and walked until we got tired then turned around and went back. Along the way we discovered this rather unique sight. Lots of folks taking photos of the gate. Nice piece of history.

We came here as part of a cruise through South America. We walked from the cruise port and once you leave the port area it is nice. There are lots of small shops, street vendors and cafes. Nice architecture and relaxing environment.
