We didn’t know what to expect when we booked the apartment in the Palacio Salvo. When we arrived, we found a huge space for the four of us, including decent kitchen, bedroom, living room and bathroom. The views over the bay and city were superb, particularly as we were nearly at the top. The building itself was still being lived in as flats and apartments with varying degrees of renovation. Loads of quirky original features still existed though with the lifts, tiled floors and murals.

Looking over Montevideo from our cruise ship, we couldn't miss the tall building topped by an assortment of domes and a sort of lens. Later, on a shore excursion through Cuidad Vieja (see my review, "See it on foot or by tour van"), there it was again!

Meet Palacio Salvo, which abuts the southeast end of Plaza Independencia (see my review, "Montevideo's dividing line").

Finished in 1928, Palacio Salvo was once Latin America's tallest building (330 ft. high if you include its antennas, removed in 2012). Palacio Salvo is a place of "onces." It was once a hotel, but ended up housing offices and private residences. It was once to have a lighthouse at the top, but ended up with those antennas instead. The site was once home to Confiteria La Giralda, a confectionary known for being where Gerardo Matos Rodriguez in 1917 wrote "La Cumparsita," probably the best known tango. Today, Palacio Salvo houses the Museo del Tango.

TIPS:

* You can tour Palacio Salvo. Make arrangements on its website or simply walk up. There's a viewpoint at the top of the building.

* Tourists can stay here; there are B&Bs available.

The Palacio Salvo is visible as the tallest building in the plaza. It was completed in 1928 and was the tallest building in Latin America for a brief period. It was named for the Salvo brothers who purchased the building. It was built on the site where the Confiteria La Giralda was once located. This is where Gerardo Matos Rodríguez wrote his famous tango La Cumparsita in 1917. Today, in the Palacio Salvo, there is the Tango Museum of Montevideo which exhibits the history of La Cumparsita and of Uruguayan Tango.

The Salvo palace is undoubtedly one of the great emblems of Montevideo.
It can be visited through a tour (10 dollars in exchange) that includes a guided tour and entry to the La Cumparsita tango museum.
Despite being a unique building, the visit lacks a little rhythm, it is true that the guides have a lot of knowledge on the subject and invite you to ask questions, the tour lacks a little of, let's say, joy.
What is a recommendable gem is the la cumparsita tango museum, a small treasure that will delight any tango lover.

Palacio Salvo is an icon in Montevideo. It is located on Plaza Independencia. Made reservations in advance for an English tour. Website is not up to date so booked through Expedia. When we were there, you could walk up and get tours readily. Tour lasted 1 hour and 15 minutes. It is prestigious to have an apartment here which cost about 2 million pesos. Nice view at the top of the city. Small gift shop in the middle of the tour with restrooms which was actually an apartment that you could see for yourself. That will be your only opportunity to buy something as you aren't allowed to come back and wander on your own. Interesting for us to see as we saw the sister palace in Buenos Aires, Palacio Barolo.

This building sits right next to Plaza Indepencia and is worth taking a few minutes to appreciate. We did not go inside or tour the museum the building contains, but as we were walking and enjoying the old town and the plaza, we enjoyed marveling at this large building with its interesting architectural details. It is said that at one time it was the tallest building in Latin America - although that is no longer the case, it's still impressive and worth taking a few minutes to appreciate.

Nice visit with guide to this extraordinary palace built by the Salvo family in the center of Montevideo.
Gorgeous architecture and great views to enjoy.
The interior gives us the idea of ancient splendors.
The visit to the tango museum, where the cumparsita was played for the first time, is very interesting

Amazing house to visit in this lovely part of the historic centre. A must see for everyone.
There is no charge to visit but do think there should be given the staff level in attendance and the maintenance of the building needed.

The building has an interesting story told by the guide. The highlight of the tour, pardon the pun, was the viewpoint that provided an excellent view of the city. But that was it. As the unique architecture was only up to the second floor... nothing much can be seen in the rest. It's a residential building... not a museum as such. The time and value invested is worth it.

Palácio Salvo, a "must" visit when walking around Montevideo's central square. The Palace has a ticket office selling various visiting times. I chose the last one to watch the sunset, from the top floor.
The Palace has a very interesting history, as well as housing the Uruguayan Tango Museum, where the famous song "cumparsita" was composed. possibility of seeing Montevideo from different angles.
