Undertook the English speaking tour of the Salvo which was really worthwhile and interesting. Lots to see behind the scenes and excellent for views over the city. Also included a visit to their Tango Museum which was very worthwhile - who knew the most famous piece of tango music in the world was written by a Uruguayan?!

In an impressive and well maintained central square. The square is surrounded by a hotch potch of impressive old buildings, old buildings in need of repair and semi-modern glass towers in poor repair. The statue of General Artigas, who liberated Uruguay from the Spanish dominates the square. The Palacio dominates the skyline

I took a guided tour and enjoyed it very much. This building has a lot to discover, just like its sister building in Buenos Aires, the Palacio Barolo. However it is not as well maintained as it should be. The main terrace has so much potential, but is not really used for touristic purposes. Also, it is a shame that... More

You can't miss this strange looking building in Independence Square (Plaza Independencia. It's worth a stop to photograph this and many other fine architectural examples in the square.

we were very lucky that our guide had special access to her, so we were able to go right up to the top. Built originally as a hotel that proved an enormous white elephant, it is now a block of flats, all individually owned.

Strange building. Originally built to become a hotell but became an office with appartments on several floors. In need of repairs but interesting to see. The former theatre in the basement is nowadays a parking.

I was told that this was a must-see in Montevideo and I got a personal tour in English from Joaquin who took me to each accessible floor and gave me the history of the building. It is amazing how this Hotel was built - from beautiful marble and incredibly beautiful wood and iron. The view from the 25th floor should... More

One of Montevideo most famous buildings! Located at the intersection of 18 de Julio Avenue and Plaza Independencia. It was designed by the architect Mario Palanti who used a similar design for his Palacio Barolo in Buenos Aires. The building is a mix of offices and private residences. We were told on our walking tour that they do have daily... More
