A very nice, classic, building, near the "Old City" ("Ciudad Vieja"), just in front of the large "Independence Square" ("Plaza Independencia"). It was originally just an opera house, but now it was restored, and all kind of events are shown, though theatre and music are the usual kinds. It also has a very, high level, restaurant in the place.

A great building in the center of Montevideo just of the PLaza de la Independencia. Built as an opera house the theatre is now used for a lot more. You can even attend a tango performance. The building has been restored and also enhanced to adapt to its new task. Al the ornate details of the first building have been... More

It is a very interesting, small theatre. It has just been restored. Of course it is not as impressive as Teatro Colon from Buenos Aires, but the sound and design are very nice. My sister is a Opera fan and she goes to the Met all the time and she was pleased with this theatre. Many famous singers performed here.Montevideo... More

Uruguayans love theater, and it shows. I saw three plays during my stay, and all were wonderful! The theatre is very beautiful, and you can purchase tickets on site!

We went on a guided tour of the theatre in our mother tongue - Portuguese - conducted by an International relations student who was very helpful and could speak our language well. The tour took us to the two main rooms of the theatre, where we received complete historical and technical explanation. At the end of the tour our children... More

It made me reminisce my youth, attending plays of famous authors and actors. Special mention for the traditional "Carnaval", dancing the nights away until dawn...

I was very fortunate to be at the Theatre when it was letting out after a performance. The tour didn't begin until 4:00 and it was 2:40. Was able to go inside and take some photos and it is stunning. There are tours in English, just check ahead. The interior is huge and although I can't vouch for this, was... More

If you are visiting Montevideo, this is a place you can´t miss. It is a very nice, historical remodelled theatre. There is a wide variety of options to see, for all sorts of taste and age. You can see opera, classical music, and dance to modern music, black theatre, comedy, drama, shows for kids and many others. I suggest buying... More
