- WImomFond du Lac, Wisconsin2,340 contributionsGreat tour!Would suggest to arrive early to book tours. There was a long line ahead of us but they were able to accommodate everyone. Tour times vary depending on the month so check their website which has accurate information. Cost is 90 Uruguayan pesos or about $3 USD, payable only in cash and pesos. Tours are in Spanish, Portuguese and English. Guide spoke English well. There were only four people on the English tour. Guided tour is one hour.Visited January 2020Written April 2, 2020
- DuquesadinerGlasgow, United Kingdom1,406 contributionsOutstanding architectureThis was probably the highlight of our city tour. For the most part we saw buildings that were in a poor state of repair and areas that needed a lot of regeneration. The theatre stands out as it is so beautiful, not quite expected in its location. I understand there is a tour inside but we didn’t have the time to take it, such a pity.Visited March 2020Traveled with friendsWritten April 6, 2020
- 418juliorMontevideo, Uruguay24 contributionsa must you cannot looseThere are at least one big ballroom at this old theatre which has been entirely remodeled 8 years ago. There is also a very good snack bar close to another little theatre just inside the Solis Theatre. Is the "Zavala Muniz" little theatre where you can have modern theatre to enjoy.Visited February 2020Written February 23, 2020

We saw a production of Mozart’s Don Giovanni at Teatro SolÃs. Because of a strike, opening night was cancelled and instead they offered their dress rehearsal on the opening night date free and open to the public. The performance was superb. The singers and orchestra were perfect. The costuming and sets, which were contemporary, modular and used projections, were interesting. I think I might have preferred more traditional settings and costumes, however, overall it was a great performance. The theater itself, built in 1856, is very much like the opera houses in Europe, beautiful and elegant. Entrance to the art exhibit in the basement gallery is free and open to the public.

On any tour of the Old City, you'll be dropped off at Independence Plaza. This theater is quite nearby.
It opened in 1856 and the building and looks like it came from Rome or Athens. It was designed by an Italian architect Carlo Zucchi.
I originally thought it was just a museum but it has quite an active life for music, arts, acting, etc.

We were on a tour and asked to be dropped off early at the end of the tour. We landed near the Theatre Solis. I think it was the very first thing to grab our attention. Really kind of looked out of place. Made us think we were somewhere in Europe.

We tried to get a tour of the theatre when we were there, but they were not open, so we just viewed the outside. Based on Google Images, the interior looks very nice and worth touring. The outside is rather plain. This would be another site you can see easily get to from the cruise port.

As a brazilian from Rio de Janeiro, where we have a gorgeous opera house called THEATRO MUNICIPAL, I've to admit we can only visit it during an event, something that doesn't occur with TEATRO SOLIS. You can have about 1 hour tour showing almost the whole building and the history about the construction and the actual situation The tour is only 20 pesos (spanish) or 40 pesos (english and portugese). Of course is a must! It's located right downtown, close to Ciudad Vieja and 2 blocks from the very known Bar Fun Fun (typical bar with Uruguay music and singers)

When you visit Montevideo, you must go to the Teatro Solis, surely one of the most beautiful theaters in the world. It has recently been renovated--and the results are magnificent. Obviously, Uruguayans truly love the arts for a country to build such an impressive edifice devoted to drama, music, and dance. Young and old regularly attend plays, recitals, and concerts at the Solis. Every country should be so lucky.

We were lucky that our visit had an open evening and the theater was across the plaza from the Radisson Hotel. We were able to purchase 3rd balcony seats for about $10 US,
this was about 40 feet from stage front and 20 feet high. The performance was just great. If you are like me, the orchestra seats are OK but above the stage seating is great.

It's a must see when visiting Montevideo. Amazing architecture very well preserved. One of the most important pieces of art and history in Montevideo. It also has a small nice cafe. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Just be aware it closes at 4PM.

Me and my wife went to see the theater around 13:00. We were informed that on Tuesdays the your runs around 16:00.
15 min prior that we arrived there, after ask 3 different staffs finally they set up a meeting point. Around 16:05 my wife ask the counter girl about the tour, she said was cancelled just now.
Not worth it, actually the entire city isn't worth the visit.

Sem guias não há como entrar nas dependências do teatro, exceto na cafeteria que tem entrada por dentro e porta exclusiva para a rua. O local é bem seguro. Fora do passeio, só indo a algum espetáculo. 😊

Hey there !

Is there anyway I can buy tickets in advance or online ?
Thanks for reply in advance

for some reason, the page is not publishing my reply. You CAN buy online through a ticket selling system, connected to the State owned Phone Company. The place is called Tickantel. Look for it in internet, and once inside, look for your preferred show

Obrigada.
