I live in Montevideo, and have for a couple of years. I loved walking through Ciudad Vieja and looking at all the gorgeous old buildings but I wasn't sure (other than a few obvious ones like the old post office) exactly what I was looking at. A friend and I took the tour one afternoon and were really pleased with what we learned.

Alberto (tour guide) is very knowledgeable about the city as well as its history and its historic buildings. He is also a very pleasant person. It's a great way to get to know the stories behind all the beautiful old buildings you see while you walk through the old city. By the way, he speaks English as well as Spanish.

There is normally a charge for the tour, but I believe he also gives a free tour on Fridays around 3:00 p.m. If you sample that tour, you may want to arrange another one. We're planning on taking another one of his tours through a nearby neighborhood.

Thanks Alberto for a fantastic tour today. I got my own private tour and had the best time in my drumming lesson! Alberto is very hospitable and knowledgeable. Stumbled across International Day of Uruguayan Candombe which included drumming and dancing and lots of colour. Highly recommend this tour / company!

If you are on a cruise, this is a great tour to take, as Alberto meets you just a 5 minute walk from the port area and most of the walking is in the area. He was great about answering emails promptly and providing information. My husband isn't a very good tourist so walking with him was more like being with a friend than a professional tour guide, spewing out facts.

We took his "Classic Cafés and Bars" tour which he is still working on perfecting. There was some confusion about the price as currently it's $25USD on his website, but we paid $40 and its very understandable as he pays for all the food tasting along the way plus mineral water; so its a good value.

We had a great walking tour of the city with 3 restaurants along the way. Loved La Petitie Cuisine and certainly would return there for a full lunch, should I return to Montevideo. The small tasting menu was perfect and the timing good. Our second restaurant was Bar Hispano; a typical non tourist tapas bar and restaurant. We must have had 25 small tasting dishes placed in front of us, most with heavy Italian influence; pastas, farinata, pizza and lots of fried foods, petite ham sandwiches and sweets. Not my favorite type of food, but certainly a genuine experience. From there I think the tour went a little astray...we took a bus to the University area for typical grilled meats but I think I would have preferred stopping at the Mercado del Puerto for the quintessential lunch with parrillas…grilled beef. We waited a long time for the food to be served and I was anxious to get back to the port area. The tour was a bit longer than expected.

Alberto is a very enterprising young man so I am sure he will work out some of the details of this tour. He would benefit by settling on three specific restaurants at specific times so the food is pre-picked by him and ready for the group's arrival. This would make the most of tourist's limited time in the city. The tour has lots of potential and I'm sure Alberto will have it streamlined soon! Great effort and I highly recommend a trip around town with him.

I found this walking tour to be average, since Alberto, the guide (who is a very nice person by the way), did not seem very excited about it, spoke with a low tone voice and kept forgetting to tell the dates of historic events. Besides that there was not much context to the explanations, which were a little brief.

When you visited, the area we toured before going to la Ciudad Vieja is called el Prado which is rich in history from Montevideo's glamorous past. I'm sorry I did not tell enough stories of the mansions that line the streets of the neighborhood. Your comments serve as a reminder for me to project my voice. Thank you!

I really enjoyed my tour with Alberto. I learned a lot about the city that I wouldn't have on my own. This tour was a great way to see the all the highlights of the city, and is perfect for traveller's with limited time. Part of the 'Shore Excursion' was also a Candomble drum lesson, which was awesome! I definitely recommend this tour for traveller's looking to learn more about Montevideo instead of just wandering around.

Alberto was patiently waiting for us as we exited the secure pier area. He led us on a 3 hour walking tour of the city, relating the history and promise of Montivideo. We stopped in a lovely sidewalk cafe for a much needed rest and a cup of good coffee. We literally walked from one side of the city to the other before he left us off near the pier at the fascinating indoor market. Having been born in NY, Alberto's English was excellent and I would recommend him without hesitation as a guide.

Alberto is a great host and really helped me to get to know Montevideo. He's extremely welcoming - we had breakfast at his home on his rooftop terrace with great views of the city and then saw all the sights on foot. His knowledge of history and architecture in particular are excellent. And weaving craft beers, local wines, Uruguayan liquors and mate (local drink) into the tour made it even more fun!
Highly recommended.

Alberto, our guide, did a great job of explaining the history of Montevideo and the port area specifically. The 3 hour tour turned into 4 and a half hours as we indulged in a Mate and some goodies. Alberto answered our many questions and his answers were in depth and there was nothing he didn't know. He speaks perfect English (he is originally from New York) and has a low key personality. He discussed the present day political situation and was up to date on everything. It was very enjoyable.

Alberto really knows his adopted city. He was more than able to answer our questions about Uruguayan history, customs and quirks. The afternoon felt like hanging out with a friend.

Montevideo seems to lack the network of free walking tours that the other cities I visited in SA had, so these tours are a good alternative. Alberto really knows his stuff. He's definitely a history nerd, and I ended up picking his brain a lot over the course of the tour and never stumped him. He genuinely loves the city and its history and it shows. He takes you all through the old city, talking about its history as well as its current state. You jump into several of the small museums that are clustered in the area and we even grabbed a medio y medio. The nice thing about Montevideo is that all the main historical sights are clustered in a relatively small space, making it an ideal place for a walking tour. Definitely recommended.
