It didn’t open. I went along on a Wednesday morning, having checked that the opening hours were 10am to 5pm.
So at 10am I and several bus loads of tourists found ourselves staring at the notice on the locked gates, telling us that it opened at 10am, but it was closed and it remained closed.
I stayed until 10.25am, during which time the other tourists drifted back to their buses and were driven away.
In the end, with no sign of it opening and no staff anywhere, I gave up and left.
That’s Uruguay for you. It was a sunny morning, so perhaps the staff felt they had more interesting things to do than open up the stadium for all those pesky tourists.
Hugely disappointing.

As I had difficulty finding information about this, here are some guidelines. The stadium is visited through the Football Museum, with restricted access to the stands. The price is $300 for foreigners and they accept cards. The staff are super helpful and friendly!

Visiting the stadium is very pleasant, there is a small museum right at the entrance and then you have access to the stands. (there is no access to the lawn)
The visit is self-guided and has no limited time... it is a very beautiful place (although it needs renovations) and for those who like football it is worth visiting.

For those who like football, it is an unmissable trip. One of the great symbols of sport, home of the first World Cup final.
The visit includes a very complete museum (focused more on Uruguayan football itself), and we can even go to the stands.

As a rabid fan of the beautiful game, visit to the site of the 1st World Cup was a treat. The stadium is the home of the Uruguay National team. The museum was more static than interactive. Exhibits of the history of the sport, but may not entertain non-fans. Our family was fascinated by the displays, but we have traveled to a few WCs together. Touring the stadium was cool for a fanatic. The construction itself was interesting.
The tour is worth it only if you are passionate for the game.

I couldn't visit the football museum and the stadium. Apparently it's not available to visit during holidays. How terrible is that? Maybe the most famous sightseeing of the city and it's not available to visit - durin summer time holiday. UNBELIVABLE!!!

Easy to get there and park your car on the street. You have to pay to enter, and right at the beginning we passed through the museum. Very interesting to see a little history. And then, see and walk around the stadium. See what the chairs were like and the distance to the field, people are very close to the lawn. I really enjoyed the visit.

It is a stadium that brings back impressions of the 30s and 50s. Built 100 years after the constitution was established in Uruguay and hosted the world cup that Uruguay won. It feels old as it enters its 9th decade but this feeling is what exactly makes it a piece of football history. The tower is an imposing structure overseeing the stadium. You can visit the tribunes but not the pitch. Great experience.

We visited ‘Estadio Centenario’ in December 2011. We were in a hurry, so we have no time to make a calm visit to the museum and the Estadio Centenario (the scenario of World Cup of 1930), which is located on a beautiful park. It is not close to downtown, is better to take a taxi, or a bus. Very cheap entrance fee (round 5 US$) that admit you to the museum and to the bleachers. The museum is an old style one, with no modern gadgets and fancy things. There are many historical photographs, old uniforms, trophys and so on… I think it needs a little modernization… After seen museum, you can go to the bleachers where you can see (and take many good photographs of) the stadium, which is really huge… You can enjoy the architecture of Stadium and see that strange tower which is there… In your way out, you can try to buy some souvenirs (like a t-shirt for instance), but there are not much things to buy… This stadium is a historical one and any football fan will appreciate to visit it. I liked very much.

100 pesos entry and appears to be open Mon & Tues as well as the rest of the week despite what website says. Museum opens at 10am.

The 140 bus (marked "Portones") from Plaza Independencia in the Old Town will take you there in 25 minutes and only costs 19 pesos.

Museum is quite large and is on two floors although all text is Spanish only.

Look out for Uruguay players' shirts from 1930 and 1950 World Cup finals as well as Geoff Hurst's 1966 shirt (which looks in suspiciously good condition I have to say) and shirts of Maradona and Pele.

Great to be able to climb the terraces and see the stadium which doesn't appear to have changed much since 1930!

There is a chance of seeing either Penarol or Nacional play here on Saturday or Sunday. I hadn't realised and could have kicked myself.
