we are from India. we visited the place on a Sunday. the fort is beautiful and the view from the view is truly exceptional. the neighbourhood is not safe at all. while returning from the fort at around 2 in the afternoon, we were grabbed from behind by two youngsters and one of them had a knife and he kept it close to my husband’s neck and asked for some money and the cellphones. fortunately after screaming for help, some of the locals arrived at the spot and the two youngsters fled away. one of the locals even dropped us to the nearby bus stand in his car. The experience traumatised us for quite sometime.

i would advice you to not visit the place on weekends and if you are planning to do so then
please avoid carrying any valuables with you.

The view is fantastic but avoid the back streets, this is a rough neighborhood and we got a handbag snatched. Maintain situational awareness at all times, and if you want to come here, consider booking a taxi instead of using bus. The view is amazing, and if you are careful its worth doing.

Take that title literally. Uruguay is rather flat and low so even though the fort is only on a low hill it is certainly the highest point in the area.
The problem with visiting the fort is that you probably need your own vehicle to do it. The area around the fort is partly slums and my wife who is Uruguayan is very wary of being in such areas. Plan your route and go straight to the fort.
They supposedly have an entry fee, about 20 pesos (US$1) from memory but the last time I went there was no-one there to collect it. The interior rooms have an interesting collection of uniforms and armaments from down the ages.
One time when the weather was good we had a picnic on the lawns to one side of the fort. Again, my wife was not comfortable because of the proximity to the slums further down the hill. I guess I am a bit more laid back when it comes to things like that.
All in all a nice way to spend a couple of hours if you have access to a vehicle.

We were jumped on by three youths who grabbed out bags while we were admiring the view. The museum was closed - maybe that made things quieter and more dangerous. So if you go there either stay in the car or don't take valuables.

Four of us (ages 53-69) were attacked by three males ranging from about 12 to 35 around 1:15 pm. Two of them beat my friend with rocks (puncturing her head) and broke her purse. She held on to the purse and fought back by hitting and kicking. Her husband had a gun pointed at his face so he threw some money in the air hoping they would go for it and we could get away. My husband and I fought off one after he ran from my friend. We yelled and fought back and it shocked them so they ran off. We were pretty sure the gun was empty when they were throwing rocks at us but it was very frightening. I hope that our reports will cause changes in the security of this old fort. It has a great view of the city. Needless to say we got in our car and got away from there as fast a we could!

Nice view but watch out, it is located in one of the worst neighbourhoods of Montevideo. If you go during the day, during week ends, by car, nothing should happen. I just do not recommend to go there anyhow... may be I am paranoid, never happen anything to me there, but the location is one of the worst, so why gamble?

I can not understand why people in the city warned us to go here. And I also read about the area as 'slum'. I guess people have different views of what slum is... We took bus 124 from centro and got off at Cuba street. Then hailed a cab and got all the way up for 3$. Very tranquil, nicely moved lawns, museum closed (open 10-18 Wed-Sun) but well worth the trip. No city noise, fresh breeze from the river and not so much people. We walked down trough the 'slum' which is actually normal peoples homes, talked to a few and got on the bus again back to centro. No harm done to me even if I look like a gringo...

We got a taxi out to the fort and the views from it are magnificent. There is a tiny entrance fee but the views are more than worth it!

The soldiers working there arranged for another taxi to come and collect us and bring us back to the city.

The view is what drew me to the Fort. Everything is in Spanish in the Fort. The Fort is one of many that were built to defend the coast line. After telling someone that I drove there and wandered around the fort by myself, they said I was crazy. The Fort is located in one of the worse neighborhoods in the city. So, be forewarned and be aware. Combine this with are park near the beach and a cold beer at the Golf course.
