The Cathedral Basilica of Lima is the most important temple in Peru and a majestic MUSEUM of sacred art. It was founded by Francisco Pizarro in 1535, with the founding of the City of Kings. The Cathedral summarizes the history of the city of Lima, not only in the ecclesiastical field, but also political and artistic. The styles that converge in it through the works it houses are Renaissance, Mannerist, Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical. The museum is open every day. Entrance prices range from 10 to 30 soles and guided tour is included.

    Ornate, Iconic, Magnificent
The Plaza is dominated by this magnificent Roman Catholic Cathedral, which is a significant masterpiece along with all the architectural, historical and religious art and artifacts that are inside. There are three doors in the Main Façade. The center door is “The Door of Forgiveness”. Make it a point to enter through that one. We did. It is just as imposing on the inside, as it is on the outside. The architecture has representations of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Classical styles. There is a Baptistry with some superb cedar wood carvings, plus innumerable collections of medieval art all over the place. Each of the 14 side Chapels are impressive in their own artistic display and history. One of them is the Mausoleum of the founder of Lima – the Spanish “Conquistador” Francisco Pizarro, who is credited with carrying the first log to construct this Cathedral. At the side entrance between the Chapel of Our Lady and the Chapel of Saint Rose, keep a watch for a cut-away panel in the Cathedral wall showing some Bamboo construction. Apparently, this gives some movement and flexibility during earthquakes (The Cathedral had to be rebuilt after being destroyed by massive earthquakes in 1687, 1746 and 1940). An amazing tit-bit provided to us by our tour guide. It was not crowded on the afternoon that we visited. We could peacefully listen to the detailed explanations of our remarkable tour guide, and take in all the spectacular details pointed out to us. If you find yourself in this area, make sure you visit this Cathedral with a guide. It makes it easy to understand why this place is the true fabric that makes this city extremely unique in its rich cultural history.

Private English Speaking Tour of this Beautiful Cathedral in the Heart of Lima!
My friends, and I recently toured the beautiful cathedral in downtown Lima Square. We opted for the private English-speaking tour, which was absolutely fabulous! Our young guide was very informative and provided so much history of the cathedral itself, and the families that had a connection to it. I highly recommend visiting this beautiful Cathedral, and taking the tour! Once finished, you can walk in the large plaza outside and admire the gorgeous architecture and palace!

    Fantastic Religious History
On my third visit to the Cathedral in 2 weeks, we were finally able to see the entire inside, including all the museum rooms. There is so much to see. Even skulls and bones if you are into that. I believe the ticket was 15 sols. We were there when a choir and band was practicing inside for an upcoming concert...it was magical. It's the luck of the draw. On Sunday mornings there is Mass and you can go in to see only certain parts of the Cathedral. On Monday, the doors were locked shut, so you can only see it from the outside. Two weeks later on a Sunday afternoon, the entire place was open to the public...what a treat it was! Best and Nicest Cathedral/Basilica in all of Peru. Don't miss it.

This is the cathedral of the city. It is attractive and well done, but far from being a great one. That being said, it is still worth your time and effort to see it. You are in Lima, and it is part of the fabric of what makes the city unique--there is a lot of history here.

By the way, if this is the first one you have ever seen, you will really be impressed!

Glorious catacombs drew us in! But the catacombs are only the icing on the cake. The library is interesting and the choir area offers insight of how long the mass could be. The cheater seats to support the back while waiting to sing. Not quite a glorious day.

Do explore the courtyards and check out the plumeria. Examine the tile work, moorish in concept but beautiful.

The catacombs are fascinating, the do require a ticket and guide. Ask what happens to your body after the initial internment.

Great place to while away the afternoon.

The cathedral in Lima is an impressive building and there is something to discover everywhere. Whether on the detailed facade or inside in the numerous rooms from different eras full of art, historical sights and religious objects.
The visit was worth every cent of the entrance fee!
You can spend a long time here and discover so many details and artistic elements in addition to the information boards!
An absolute recommendation!

All very well explained by Guide Joel. I learned a lot of information about Francisco Pizarro as his daughter Francisca Pizarro fought to place her father’s remains in that Cathedral space. The Baroque art very beautiful and very detailed the artists who made their works. I also learned that we have two Peruvian saints and three others are Spanish. The Crypts found under the Lima Cathedral and the organ. I had never entered the cathedral before. I was fascinated.

It was an excellent experience and I recommend this guided tour which is really interesting. There are many treasures and many stories hidden among the walls of this building that is a central part of our city. The guides are specialized in the subject and are good storytellers, which makes the visit enjoyable.

Spectacular building which dominates the eye on entering the Plaza de Mayo. The Cathedral stands on the site of an ancient Inca temple and was a distinct attempt to cower the local populace to follow Catholicism. The present structure dates from 1602 and was completed in 1797 when the two bell towers were finished. Obviously with the frequent earthquakes experienced the building has altered considerably over the years. On our visit the main Church was closed to the public, but a side chapel was open. A majestic Cathedral and beautiful to observe.

Situated on the Plaza Mayor, the Cathedral is a must-see in Lima. Pick up a fold-out leaflet (available in English), as a guide to the cathedral and crypts. Follow the numbered guide around the various chapels starting with Francisco Pizarro burial chapel; the Spanish conquistador, who founded Lima. At the side entrance between the Chapel of Our a Lady and the Chapel of Saint Rose, look out for the cut-away panel in the cathedral wall showing the construction using bamboo to give flexibility against earthquakes. You will need about 1 hour here. Highly recommended with several other attractions nearby.

We didn't get to make the internal visit because we were out of time. Outside, the Cathedral is very beautiful. The price of 30 soles (R$ 45,00) for visitation which I found a bit expensive and does not have the right to half a student entrance.
