While visiting Plaza de Armas in Lima, I needed a break from the sun and decided to stand on the corner while pondering my next touristic move. Well, I happened to be standing in front of Casa Navarro and I was immediately interested in the rows and rows of clothing fabric before my eyes. As businessmen walked in and out picking up their orders, I inquired about the material and the salesmen patiently walked me through the entire process of having a suit made to order.

Yes, I'm an off-the-rack guy and never thought about a custom made suit as the NY prices are cost prohibitive. When I learned that Casa Navarro could make me a suit for about US $200, I had to see more. They walked me through the rows of material and I selected a middle of the road priced "tela" or fabric. The sastrero is conveniently located upstairs and came down to take my measurements for an estimate on how much material would be needed, driving the final price. When they quoted me US$220, I had to go for it. Higher priced materials can result in a total cost from $200-600.

Casa Navarro is old-school professional. They measure every inch and work with booklets - no IPads, no websites, just excellent quality clothing. They explained that the suit making process would take three repeat visits but they assured me that the suit would be ready before my return trip to NY. After paying and selecting all of the options, my first fitting was the next day with the shell of a suit. Then I returned 3 days later for a second fitting with the pants and jacket in near final form. I wanted the jacket taken in at the sides and they happily obliged. Tip - be on time. Coming early means that you will wait for your allotted time. But when they say 3pm, the sastrero comes down at 3pm sharp to take care of you.

At pick up, I had my final fitting and reviewed against all of the options I requested (2 button jacket, 1" hems on pants, etc). The suit was wrapped to go in a garment bag and I am very pleased with the entire experience.
