A rare example of the exquisite "Churrigueresque" baroque style!
Oct 2019
At just a few blocks away from the "Plaza de Armas" and still in the "Centro Histórico de Lima" area, you will find a unique church: the "Iglesia de San Agustín"! It was firstly built in 1573 and, along the centuries, has been rebuilt and restored several times. Its facade is a rare example of the exquisite "Churrigueresque" style - the Spanish "ultra" baroque style, typical of the 17th and 18th centuries. The facade, overloaded with stone carved ornaments, will immediately catch your attention. Entering the church, you will find, in contrast, a very simple interior, with a magnificent image of Saint Rita de Cassia in front of the main alter. One last remark: in Lima, besides "Iglesia de San Agustín", only the nearby "Iglesia y Convento de La Merced" features the same "Churrigueresque" style facade. Visit both. Enjoy!

Another Nice Church in Lima
Jan 2020
We visited this church as part of a walking tour of historic Lima. The inside is not as impressive as several other churches but we loved the facade.

Nice church
Dec 2019 • Couples
This church is very nice, well maintained and with plenty of people going there. Always there is a small crowd of people.

Interesting

Not as impressive as the others but San Augustin has a nice story.
Built in 1574 was almost destroyed during the war by the artillery fire.
It was restored with a new style (late 18 century) but without the belfry, destroyed but never rebuilt due to cost issues.
The front facade is remarkable but inside is lacking to much luxury. The wooded carving and the great wooden sculpture La Muerte is nice.

Beautiful old exterior, uninspired interior
Mar 2013 • Business
The outside of this looked beautiful and old, kind of like a sand castle. The inside was much less impressive. Worth checking out if you've got a little time and are in the area, perhaps after visiting Iglesia de la Merced and Convento de San Francisco, which are in the neighborhood.
