This is defenetly the unique opction to explore bird and fauna in Lima-Peru. I really enjoyed visiting this place. And, It's a shame I can't be there for the Global Big Day celebration. As far as I know, it's spectacular.

Pantanos de Villa is a wetlands hidden within Lima's city limits. It's a great place for local and out-of-town visitors to observe over 208 different species of birds in one setting. These birds are a mix of migratory birds from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres, species that migrate from the Andes, and local residents. Some of the birds you may spot here are various Herons and Egrets, White-cheeked Pintail, Great Grebe, Andean Coot, Neotropic Cormorant, Peruvian Pelican, Franklin's Gull, Gray-Headed Gull, Puna Ibis, Black Vulture, Peruvian Thick-knee, Black Skimmer, American Oystercatcher and the Wilson's Phalarope. The park offers a land circuit with a watchtower over a large lagoon, as well as a boat tour around a smaller body of water. There is also an area where the Pacific ocean and wetlands meet, where you can observe thousands of birds interacting comfortably between the two ecosystems. The guides are friendly and knowledgeable. Tours are done in only Spanish. It's still worth a trip even if you do not speak Spanish to enjoy the tranquil surroundings and abundant wildlife within this bustling city.

Some places in Peru can really underwhelm. This is a swamp area that acts as reservoir for Lima. Its surrounded by slums and strange, unfinished buildings. I don't know why people would visit its kind of depressing. They promote it as a bird-watching spot but the diversity of species is poor, and most of the birds there are quite common.

I think that the people in some of the previous reviews have to only be tourists. After living in Lima for almost a year, Pantanos is a very welcome and beautiful break. It is quiet, just the sound of nature and the waves crashing on the shore. After a year of car alarms, taxi horns and buses, this place is like heaven! Such a breath of fresh air, and depending where you are staying its not that far. Maybe 30 mins at the most from Miraflores. SO when you start getting sick of the hustle and bustle of Lima be sure to check it out!

The Pantanos the Villa are a protected swamp area in the district of Chorrillos. There are different lagunas, many birds and it borders the ocean. Although crowded in by shantytowns it is luckily large enough to give the feeling of free green space and fresh air. You can do several walks here.

Pantanos de Villa is located beside the Pacific Ocean just south of Lima and consists of several lagoons and natural areas. There are some companies offering birding tours to the sanctuary, but it is possible to go there on your own. We hired a driver for $10 US per hour to drive us there and wait for us while we birded. There is a 15 Sol charge per person for entry into the sanctuary. It was well worth it. This sanctuary is in an area where it is probably not really feasible for a tourist to take public transportation. We did see lots of birds including: Black Vultures, Black Necked Stilts, Black Skimmers, American Oyster Catchers, Snowy Egrets, Whimbrels, Yellow Crowned Night Heron, Little Blue Heron, Great Grebes, Pied Billed Grebes, Neotropic Cormorants, Grey Hooded Gulls, Wilson's Phalaropes, Ruddy Turnstones, Cinnamon Teals, White Cheeked Pintails and several other types of birds. We spent about three hours there.

Bidrwatchers' paradise. Litter free, pretty well-taken care of. Nice and quite boat trip to observe some of the 208 bird species, 11 species of fish and 54 species of arthropods. It's the only protected area close to the capital city. The entrance is cheap: children S/.4 ( a little more than $1 and adults S/8 ($2.50 aprox).

A trip to Pantanos de Villa is well worth the short trip. Whether you live in Lima, are visiting the city for a short time or have been traveling around South America for months Pantanos de Villa offers you something truly different.
This marshland area is the only Conservation Area within the Lima city limits and is a key refuge for migrating North and South American birds giving it's protection both local and global significance in the protection of biodiversity.
There are over 200 species of birds that may be spotted in the area including the rare quirky Peruvian thick-knee and the delightfully lovely, many-colored rush-tyrant.
The conservation area contains both well marked and very walkable trails and the opportunity to take a guided boat tour that would rival the Riveria for the calm it can instill within it's passengers. The trail on the oceanfront is visually stunning as thousands of Franklin's gulls weave through the air in front of the enormous pounding waves that make this a non-swimming and relatively empty beachfront. At the oceanfront you may luck into seeing the Peruvian booby.
The area is well maintained and the Spanish speaking guides are extremely knowledgeable. For the entrance price of S./8 it would be hard to find a better value experience within the city limits and your price of admission goes towards protecting this essential conservation area. The site is in need of more tourists to bring in revenue to maintain the park in it's current condition from the pressures of civilization pushing up against it's limits.
So why not travel with purpose, spend some time in a city oasis and contribute to conserving the birdlife biodiversity the continent is famous for?
Enjoy!

25 soles each way is a good price to pay. Some taxi companies fry to charge 80 Soles. Be aware.
There are a good amount of common bird species for those wishing to familiarise themselves with Peruvian/ South American species.
Black Skimmer, Elegant Tern, Inka Tern, little blue heron, Peruvian booby, band tailed gull, kelp gull, franklins gull, grey hooded gull. Yellow crowned night heron, puna ibis, cinereous harrier and more.
These idiots on here saying there's not much to see or clueless and have no knowledge of wildlife or wildlife reserves. This is the natural environment. What do you expect? Disney land?

I am not sure the casual tourist would find it excellent, but the place is very nice. We found parts of the refuge closed, including two of the towers, but one of the walks was under construction for improvements. What a great resource for the Lima area, a relatively calm place with great birds. The lagoon by the beach is best, with huge flocks of gulls, skimmers, pelicans and waders. The gull were mostly Franklin's Gulls, Which are only here in the northern winter, so numbers may be different in other months. We found a Roseate Spoonbill and a Chilean Flamingo there. The trail around the lagoon is not well marked, but we found our way along the inside of the fence by the beach.

Hi Camille,
How can I find a guide to help me see birds in this park - or is it small enough for me to just walk around?
Written March 20, 2018
Hi
Can you visit Los Pantanos by yourself or should you take a tour?
Thank you
Sara

It is easy to visit by yourself but tours are also available. I suggest a good bird book such as "100 Aves de Lima" or "Birds of Peru"
Buses and taxis travel to Los Pantanos (from most parts of Lima) or you could stay at Pantanos B&B (but closed in September) subject to a few days notice
Hope this helps

I am looking for a birding guide to take me to Pantanos de Villa for a half day but one guide told me he avoids going there for safety reasons. Any comments on a senior woman going there?
