This Area of Lima has become quite dangerous if you dont know where to go or get lost. What is beautiful about Callao is that still have those Colonial houses, wish make certain areas quite colorful and with its own caracter..But i wouldn´t go with out a good guide or a person from that area. Not need to put yourself in danger.

Callao is not a nice city, it is dirty, smelly, with traffic jams everywhere. Yes this is the way people are living in Lima and unless you visit a quarter like this you cannot really tell people you have been to Lima. There is a lot of small shops and stands on the streets selling everything - from cheap fresh... More

Please seperate reviews about the neighbourhood Callao and La Puna. Although La Punta is part of this neighbourhood, it's a complete different place altogether. Where La Punta is nice and tourist friendly, Callao is a poor area where you shouldn't stop. When Waze directed us through the backstreets of Callao when we were on our way to Real Felippe, even... Real Felipe is a very interesting place, it has a lot of information about the old Spanish harbor, military officer outfits and weapons. Also cells and some Army artillery vehicles used during the war with Ecuador.

Callao itself wasn't anything special, but we enjoyed our visit to the Real Felipe, the fort built by the Spanish in the 1700s to protect the gold they stole from Peru from being stolen from them by pirates! The tour lasts a little over an hour and was 15 soles per person. A lot of walking over rough surfaces and... More

Violent crime is rampant in this part of the city (especially on the road from the airport) and it goes under-reported because the local police make filing a claim so difficult. Avoid.

They say this neighborhood is kind of dangerous so be careful. I get there by car with some local friends so I didn´t feel unsafe at all. It´s a great place for eating 'ceviche' while look at the pacific ocean.
