It's a shame that both the port and airport are located in Callao because compared with most of the rest of Lima, Callao is an absolute disaster. Famous for its high levels of crime, this is not where you want tourists disembarking. The airport itself is safe, but driving out of Callao is a bad first experience. Tourists must NEVER walk the streets at night here. Just drive out as fast as you can. Don't let Callao taint your view of the rest of Lima.

There is not a cruise port terminal here. They do provide a shuttle from the cruise ship to the dock entry. BOTTOM LINE: We left Callao to drive to the Lima Airport to fly to Cusco for a Machu Piccu excursion. The port was not very exciting. The Lima Airport is a busy place and expect delays and tight waiting areas. MY RATING: 5/10

Fantastic area, hidden gem within the Callao neighbourhood. Check out the “Monumental Callao” art house and its direct surrounding. You can easily spend half a day wandering here! Great food and drinks options too

I Stayed in Callao for 2 nights. A very nice stay. But it was hard to get a cab from Lima centrum late friday night (around 11.30pm) - but UBER is to trust, they drowe me without any problem, and nice drivers. Callao is wonderful with the walk by the sea. And all the birds from all over the world. I think its worth a visit half a day and then you can go up to Limas crazy puls.

It was an absolutely incredible experience to swim with sea lions. I have to be honest, I was afraid in the beginning that Callao was going to be a dangerous district but in the end everything turned out ok and this tour started in a safe part of the district. In fact, ordering a taxi from San Isidro costed me 23 soles which was totally fine. I 100% recommend the tour, but make sure to take a motion sickness pill in case you might get nausea on the boat...and be prepared for some heavy smell of the animals :-)
