About
The MALI’s permanent collection preserves more than 18,000 pieces –among textiles, ceramics, metal work, photography, drawings and paintings– that witness to more than 3,000 years of art history in Peru. The museum exhibits the artworks in the permanent galleries in a sequential way divided in four sections: pre-Columbian, Colonial, Republican and Modern art. It also has galleries for temporary exhibitions of national and international artists. MALI is located in the heart of downtown Lima and provides the opportunity for a first approach to Peru, through its great master pieces.

This magnificent building houses a well curates museum covering art from pre-historic times all the way to recent history. Visitors have the opportunity to appreciate artifacts and read the detailed descriptions in order to better grasp the pre-Inca and Inca covilisations.
Definitely pay a visit while in Lima!

A friend and I visited the museum and did a private tour with the curator of a special collection of a famous Peruvian abstract artist Fernando de Szyszlo. It was a wonderful experience. Afterwards we toured their permanent collection. I was impressed on how much work has been put in making the museum an amazing place to visit. A must if you are visiting Lima!

An astonishing collection and display of the many cultures and eras of pre Colombian Peruvian art. Mostly ceramics of course, but also superb ancient textiles and painting as well. There are galleries for contemporary works too, but mostly the focus is on ancient and colonial art, the main collection ending in the early 20th century. And both the old and new pieces, both sacred and profane, astonished me in their creativity and execution. If you like art or history, you'd better give yourself some time for this experience.

The MALI museum is not as dazzling as the Museo Larco, but nevertheless warrants an excellent rating. The galleries are arranged chronologically, starting with extensive displays from the pre-Columbian and Colonial eras, continuing into the Republican Period and then with a limited display of contemporary Peruvian art. Every piece is labeled in English with well-written commentaries that assist greatly with understanding its significance. Admission was only 15 soles (about $4.50). The staff was very helpful in calling us a taxi for our return to the hotel. The MALI museum compliments Museo Larco; try to see both.

Whilst this museum is not quite as popular as the Gold Museum and Larco, the visit is a must, because in addition to getting splendid examples of pre Inca and Inca treasures, and colonial at, it also has an impressive collection of modern Peruvian painting, dating from mid 19th century onwards.
The museum also plays an important educational role, especially for children.

I could spend all day looking at the wonderful collections --- the pre-columbian collection is just amazing --- absolutely amazing. The rapid shift in style following the Spanish Conquest and the rise of the vice royalty is really interesting, too. This is a very nice museum with a wonderful collection of pre-Columbian and post conquest art -- not to be missed.
