This was a super fun thing to do but beware of sea sickness! We saw so many animals - besides the many, many sea lions we saw so many types of birds including penguins and pellicans. We also saw crabs, and even a dolphin! The scenery was amazing too. My family doesn't normally get motion sick but there were so many sick people on our boat that they got completely freaked out and thought they were sick themselves. They were also a little paniced initially getting into the cold wavy ocean. But the staff were amazing and helped all of the kids to have a great experience.

The whole trip was so much fun for adults and kids. The trip was very well organized from beginning to end. The captain and tour guides were great. Beautiful sea life, caves, etc as we approached the sea lions on the the island. Being so close and swimming near the sea lions made it an unforgettable trip!

Very nice trip with some small things to take in consideration:
- the speed boat trip is around 1 hour and quite rough(motion sickness pills will be recommended)
- use sun creme for protection
- when you arrive at the sea lions prepare to jump in very cold water. The neoprene suit what you get is a shorty so you will get cold fast.
-when the trip is finished you can take a local cab to your accommodation. We went from the sea lions to larco museum and was 25 soles.

We are a family of four visiting from Ireland. We had a wonderful time swimming with sea lions and looking at penguins, and the experience is amazing. Unfortunately, our 9 year old daughter got stung by a jellyfish, first on each leg and then, when she tried to push it away from her, on her hand. It wasn't the tour company fault, but it's something that could have been prevented, first by advising people about jellyfish, second, they should provide long sleeved wetsuits, not shorties, third the company should carry a first aid kit with something for Jellyfish stings, or even vinegar (which is commonly used for jellyfish stings). When we told the guide what had happened, he just said " There are no jellyfish here" when my daughter had seen the jellyfish that stung her. We also clearly see them from the boat in other areas and there had been warnings in the newspapers just a couple of days previously, about the current abundance of jellyfish along this coast. Only the boat driver appeared concerned and spoke to my daughter in a sympathetic manner. He assisted us in washing the rash with water, which didn't help much but at least he made the effort. My daughter was in pain for about 2 hours.
We are only giving this tour a low rate because of our unfortunate experience. But the experience of seeing sea lions and Humboldt penguins is amazing.
So this is for the company :
TELL PEOPLE that there are jellyfish there, provide long wetsuits and some sort of lotion to use on jellyfish stings.

Thanks for the feedback, and normally there are not jelly fish at the area but this year is the case. We tried to swim where they are not. Thanks for the recommendations.

I am writing moments after returning from a very disappointing tour.
Yesterday we received a call that our bus would be arriving between 8:30-9. We are a family with three teen girls and we made it very clear to them what time to be ready. At 8:15, our phone rang and our driver said that he was waiting for us. We could have used the 15 minutes to get ready, but we scrambled and met him in the lobby. Once in the lobby, we learned that the driver had left to go pick up a different family. Now we sat in the lobby and waited 15 minutes for the driver. Once we headed towards the island things were fine. I signed paperwork which I discovered on my own-nobody made sure that i signed it. Our guide seemed to disappear.
The actual boat ride was very nice. Unlike the reviews we read, there was very little “tour” given. The guides on the boat pointed to a few things but that was about it. When we got closer to the sea lions, we grew very excited to swim with them. As we put on our wet suits we grew concerned (as did other passengers) at the enormous number of jelly fish out in the water. They were were large and way too many to count. I asked the guides and they waved it off. They said the boat would be moving to a place without jelly fish. That did not happen. We watched people jump in and get stung. My children (who had been stung before) were terrified and did not want to go in the water. I went in, felt a few stings from small ones and went right back in the boat. I asked the crew member if he had anything for the bites, but he was not clear with his answer. Personally, it was not safe for anyone to be in the water. We then waited on the bus 45 additional minutes for the other boat to come back. On the way back, they passed our hotel offering no explanation and went to the next hotel. Overall, I was pretty disappointed with the lack of communication and organization.

thanks for writing. The service we offer is a shared one and the shuttle a recommendation. The Hotel Marriott is building a new entrance and the driver was punctual there, because the new entrance sometimes there are some delays. Normally we have +- 15 Minutes range for the procedure. One speed boat sailed earlier today and one later, for this reason we waited for the other passengers. I am very sorry about your feedback and it is the first time I can read something like this.

This was a fairly good trip with most of the wildlife pointed out to us. The few Wilson's Petrels that flew around the boat were ignored by our guide. I also asked specifically about seeing Guanay Cormorant and he basically just shrugged although the boatman seemed to think they were possible to see. Fortunately I found one myself on the cliff. Having seen 'everything' we headed back to port arriving a good 30 minutes before the time, consequently a shorter than advertised trip.

Oh Dave, what a day, normally everything is OK not only swimming with the sea lions, also with bird watching, flora and fauna at the Palomino islands. Hope you can come back to enjoy the experience again.

Mar Adentro Excursiones: The Full Review

I rarely can pass up an opportunity to see any sort of wildlife in their natural habitat, and when I heard about Mar Adentro Excursiones and the opportunity to swim with wild sea lions off the coast of Lima, it was no exception.

Mar Adentro Excursiones offers a comfortable, guided trip out to Islas Palomino (with an English speaking guide) on a nice speedboat. The trip costs $50USD you can book online and lasts about 2.5 hours start to finish. The tour begins at 10:30am, but they ask you get there for 10am to get a briefing and a trip overview. At this point they will explain what kind of wildlife you will expect to see, as well as sea conditions and any other safety information.

The tour takes off from the port of Callao and passes through a channel between Isla San Lorenzo and Isla Fronton in order to get to Islas Palomino. The sea is a little rough between San Lorenzo & Isla Fronton, so if you’re prone to seasickness, I’d recommend preparing with some dramamine. We had a few people get sick on our boat, and I’m sure the very pungent smell of guano certainly didn’t help.

Our guide informed us that guano is the accumulated excrement of seabirds, seals and sea lions and is a highly effective fertilizer due to its exceptionally high content of nitrogen, phosphate and potassium (all of which are essential for plant growth). It is said that when first discovered, these islands were covered in guano nearly 200 feet deep! They’ve been collecting guano since the 19th century, and the collection of guano still goes on today!

On our way to Islas Palominos, we saw thousands of birds covering the islands, adorable penguins, as well as sea lions both playing out in the water near our boat and lazing out in the sun. Our boat got very close to the islands as to give the passengers a chance to see the wildlife up close and personal and snap some pretty sweet photos.

Okay, now for the fun part: swimming with the sea lions!! As we approached Islas Palomino the roars and barks of the sea lions got increasingly louder, but that just meant we were closer to getting to play with these funny creatures! The motor slowed and our guide offered wetsuits to anyone who’d like one in preparation for our swim. Knowing that I get cold very easily, I opted for a wetsuit, though many people turned them down. I don’t think many people took into consideration the fact that we were 2,000 km south of the equator - the water is very cold! Take the darn wetsuit.

Our guide jumped in first and encouraged anyone who would like to come experience an up close visit with the sea lions to jump in too. He didn’t have to ask me twice... As we approached the Island, the curious sea lions started to come towards us, barking and roaring. Some people were scared, but they have no desire to hurt you, they’re just curious and want to see what’s going on! 50 feet out from the Island our guide asked us to not get any further as to respect their territory. He then dared us to sit in the water with our toes pointing out towards the sea lions and they came right up to sniff our toes - it was very cute. They are so playful and fun and I was really sad when our 15 minutes were up with these little guys (well, actually some are enormous). The only thing I’d change about this tour is more time in the water to spend with the sea lions, but I’m pretty sure it’s a safety measure as not to disturb them for too long.

We said goodbye to our new friends and jumped back on the boat to head back towards Callao. On the way back our boat stopped a few more times to show us a bigger sea lion colony and some other bird sightings.

Overall the tour was absolutely excellent and I’d consider it a must do while in Lima. It was a very unique experience to get so close to wildlife (without disturbing them of course) and I would do it 100 times over. Our guide was informative and funny and made the experience that much better. The speedboat was of really nice quality and they even passed out snacks and water on the way back to port. It was really easy to book the tour online, and since it only goes until 1pm, you have the rest of the day to explore all that Lima has to offer.

Some Other Helpful Info:
Where are they located? Marina Club del Callao, Av. Jorge Chavez 120 Chucuito Callao (close to the Abtao submarine museum)
How do I get there? I suggest getting an Uber from your hotel, as our trip cost less than 30 soles from Miraflores, and since you won’t have wifi on the way back, try to negotiate a similar price for your return trip with one of the many taxis whizzing by the port.
What time does it start? The tour takes off at 10:30, but you need to arrive at the port at 10 to check in and get a briefing. The tour gets back at 1pm sharp.
What should I bring? Definitely wear a bathing suit and fast drying clothes as you’ll be wet when you come out of the water. Bring a towel, hat, sunscreen (there’s no cover over the boat), and extra water.
Any other suggestions? I’d bring nausea medication just incase and maybe stick to a light breakfast if you’re prone to sea-sickness!

I went on this tour with my fiancee on our last day in Peru. It did not disappoint! After travelling around Peru for a few weeks, we had one day left in Lima and decided to do this tour, even though we had already done a Ballestas Island tour. This one FAR surpassed that.
Our guides, Jerson and Rodrigo, and the captain Second were great hosts. They were funny, spoke great English, gave JUST enough background of the islands and animals without over-doing it.
The ride out wasn't as choppy as they made me believe it might be and the ocean was actually not too cold (we did it in Peru summer, in Feb.). Swimming with the sea lions was an unforgettable experience!
The one addition to the tour that would be really helpful is if one of the guides (or another person hired to come with the tour) had a GoPro or other type of underwater camera so that people on the trip wouldn't have to worry about getting pics with their own camera. I, and I think many others, would have gladly paid an extra $5-10 USD for the chance to have these pics taken, as neither of us had waterproof cameras. We managed to share contact info with some who did, so we got pictures, but if the tour provided it that would take it to the next level.
Overall, this trip was excellent and as I mentioned in the title, better than the Ballestas islands tour we had gone on previously. There was less quantity of sea birds, but still the same kinds. Further, this tour had Humboldt penguins, which the Ballestas did not. Finally, there were WAY more sea lions that we got to see up close. Of course, swimming with them was the best part. It does cost more than the Ballestas tour, but this one I think was better. A must-do if you are in Lima.

Gotta be honest- I read the reviews and was sooo excited (my daughter and I did this together) but it was not as amazing as we envisioned. We booked 2 things on TripAdvisor (we went on this trip with a tour so most things were pre planned) anyways we planned this and horse back riding in Cusco. The horse back riding was freaking amazing... this was eh. Most people in our group were scared and just so cold. The waves were crazy, the sea lions don’t really get that close so you’re just swimming in freezing / crazy waters close to sea lions. I would’ve loved for it to be some magical encounter but really it was something we could have done without. When the 15 mins of swimming were over, everyone was so happy to get back on the boat and then the full boat ride back, everyone was EXTREMELY cold and you just can’t wait to be back on land to get into a warm shower and in warm clothes (we brought a change of clothes but they get wet understandably so you’re still freezing)

Hey, thanks for the honest review and this is real what we are showing, a wild sea lions habitat, big waves (not normally, sometimes), cold water (17 Celsius degrees), and wild sea lions that normally (95%) are coming close to you and jump near you. This archipelago at Callao, Lima, PERU is amazing and not a show for everyone, we are protecting and preserving this area. I know is not like the caribbean sea with warm water (I like it too ;-)), but is pure nature and a contact with the many birds and Humboldt penguins. Anyway I hope you will keep this wild experience in mind and of course be happy to be in a normal wild area and not only a show for the human being, we love the sea lions and to swim the 20 minutes with the cochapumas is really to be alive and fell how the earth and sea are breathing.

Amazing trip. Saw thousands of sea lions, Swam with them. Saw the huge males duking it out for the prime spots on the rock. Also saw some tiny cute penguins. Next to Manchu Picchu this was the coolest thing in Peru and a very close 2nd for only $65....
