Beautiful church
Sep 2018 • Couples
You can see this church while walking the Jiron de la Union, a walking street full of shops and restaurants, between Plaza San Martin and Plaza Mayor. It dates back originally from the 16th century, but it has been rebuilt a few times, also due to earthquakes. It looks exactly the way I imagine a typical church in South America: with beautiful golden interiors and wonderfully decorated statues of saints. It has a special atmosphere. Certainly worth a visit while discovering Lima.

Cross of Padre Urraca
Oct 2018 • Solo
This historic Catholic Church dating to 1535 is located on Union Street, between Plaza San Martin and Plaza de Armas. It is designed in the Baroque style known as Churrigueresque (elaborate stucco decoration). The exterior will catch your attention but make sure you visit inside (no charge and photos allowed). The Basilica is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mercy, patroness of the Peruvian Armed Forces. One detail that caught my eye in South American churches (not just this one) is the very colorful attire of Mary. Make sure you visit the famous Cross of Padre Urraca (his remains are also in the church). Thankful petitioners leave tokens of their appreciation by the Cross.

Very beautiful
Aug 2018 • Couples
This church is amazingly beautiful inside with incredibly ornate altars and statues. Although it looks small from the outside, it is in fact large and airy inside though very dark. Photography is allowed and when we visited on a Saturday afternoon a wedding was about to take place and the church was full of flowers.

Stunningly beautiful 16th century church also known as La Merced

Hadn't been in a couple of years and it's even prettier now. They've done a bit of cleaning and sprucing up. You need to spend at least an hour here to get to see and study everything. Beautiful paintings and statues plus a beautiful altar. I've been many years ago to a wedding here and with the lights that were on then it was breathtaking

With several churches in the Lima center area and this one is very beautiful modt people focus on the department store instead of visiting this smaller church. Recommended MeuterMedia

Two memorable areas within this beautiful Basilica are the burial sites of former Archbishops and the catacombs just inside to the right of the entrance. This large crypt was preserved after discovery and is visible through a section of glass flooring. Many early paintings and sculptures are housed within the Basilica. Each Station Of The Cross is portrayed through a large painting detailing the journey of Xt.
