The awesome Gran Teatro Nacional in Lima!
Oct 2019
While visiting Lima, "Avenida Javier Prado Este" will certainly be on your way many many times. Two impressive buildings, on this important avenue, will absolutely catch your attention! One, is the Ministery of Culture (a modern "Incan" architectural style construction), which is sided by the second one, the awesome "Gran Teatro Nacional". This modern theater has opened its doors in 2011 and is considered the most important multi-purpose auditorium in Peru, seating nearly 1,500 spectators. Theater, music, ballet, opera, musicals and circus presentations are scheduled all year round! While in Lima, on "normal" times, check its programme! Always a great spectacle going on! Enjoy!

I saw today a dance program at the national theatre and was very impressed with the beautiful architecture and excellent acoustics! The seats were comfortable and spacious enough.

Check out their programme!

This is the biggest theater in town, simple inside but with all you need to enjoy a nice big spectacle. Get the program online and see if you can fit a show on your visit to Lima. There is international and national orchestras, dance companies, ballet, and a large etc.

Beautiful and modern Theatre

I watched the show "Retablo de Marineras" a fantastic show performed by the Elenco Nacional de Folclore from Peru, showcasing all Peruvian dances. This particular show was from the Marinera dance not only from Lima
or Northern Peru, but also from Cuzco, Puno, Ancash, and the Jungle. It was great!

Beatuful National Theater with almost nightly programs
Sep 2016 • Friends
If you struggle out Javier Prado (the traffic is horrendous) you can't miss on the left hand side before you reach San Borja, the relatively new and glorious National Theater. A stunning glass structure, the interior has almost perfect acoustics. And the prices are very reasonable. A recent production of the opera Turendot only cost about $50 and was wonderful. You'd pay more than twice that in Washington DC and triple in New Yourk City.

Wonderful acoustic theater
Apr 2016
Went to see The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra and this was a wonderful experience. The theater is modern and beautiful but the acoustics were fantastic. I don't think you could have a bad seat anywhere in this facility. Agree with other reviewer that the food and beverages were a bit limited and not very enjoyable, but the music outshined this negative by far.

Stunningly Beautiful Architecture Meets Acoustic Brilliance
Apr 2015 • Couples
I went to a classical music concert here, featuring Beethoven's 7th.

The Gran Teatro Nacional is a very modern facility which lacks for nothing in a technical sense. The layout of the theater is excellent, with three higher levels and a floor level. It's hard to get a bad view, although the rear seats in the upper levels would force you to squint. I'd recommend going for the sides of floor 2 if you want to focus on the performers themselves, and the "Platea" if you'd like to be more on the same level as the performance looking head on. Each has its advantages.

In a word the building is gorgeous, perhaps the nicest modern building I've set foot in here in Peru. LEDs outside light it up in slowly shifting colors. The wood paneling everywhere makes for a beautiful contrast to the concrete laden city of Lima. The interior lobby is very open with high glass walls so that even from the 3rd floor you can look out at the street.

The interior of the theater proper is equally engaging. The seating wraps around the room in a U shape, and features lots of rounded wooden edges, LED lighting, and functional/decorate elements that will pique your curiosity.

The sound quality is superb, the shape of the room makes even a subtle sound clear as day, allowing you to really appreciate the individual instruments in an arrangement. Voices carry well, even sitting at the back you can hear everything clearly.

The building impresses the whole time you are there, and the staff is extremely helpful and courteous. I highly recommend getting tickets ahead of time so as to score better seats and avoid a line. You're allowed to enter about 30 minutes before the show which gives you time to walk around and take some pictures, as well as listen to the band practicing.

If your children are well behaved, bring them along. It's an all-ages facility. It's not great if you're handicapped though, in which case you should sit at the back rows or else you'll be bumping your way down stairs. The staff will try to help as much as possible though.

The only reason the place isn't 5 stars is because it's lacking a cafe or restaurant of some sort. I really wanted to have a nice drink before going in, and all that are there are a few small carts of snacks and soft drinks. The average movie theater has more options than this, and given the large seating area in the lobby, it wouldn't be hard to open up at least a bar.

Incredible and modern theater
Mar 2015 • Friends
When I was invited to theater in Lima I was expecting a really old and common theater, as in most of Latin American countries, but I was amazed when we arrived to this brand new and modern theater. The structure outside is really nice and modern, and the inside is even better. The seats, the section and the stage are really nice, and the theater has nothing to envy to Broadway theaters, really like it. The only issue is that the food and beverages options inside are very limited.
