This is the best group out there to truly experience the remote parts of the Amazon. Everything they do is real which was a requirement for me. Many of the other tour company's out there gave me tourist trap vibes.

I was a solo traveler who was joining the 15 day wildlife Search and Survival training. There was a group of three people already signed up for the dates I was going, but they all canceled a week before the trip. With only me left on the trip I expected Amazon Explorer to cancel on me like many other tour company's have done when there is only one person booked for a tour. They instead worked out a discounted price which was very reasonable to me. A second traveler was then able to join in at the last minute.

The tour was great! I expected that we would be roughing it for 15 days, but Amazon Explorer was still able to make things very comfortable. They were very flexible and always receptive to what me and the other traveler wanted to do. They learned we really wanted to see an Anaconda, and we did find one after some searching. I really only speak English, and they brought an English-Spanish translator for me at no extra cost. Despite our very remote location, there was no time where I ever felt unsafe.

At the end of our trip, we got stuck for an extra day in Angamos which is a small town where we would take a little plane back to Iquitos. The weather took a turn for the worst and continued to look terrible. The flights out were constantly canceled. Our guides put a lot of effort into making us comfortable in Angamos while also trying to move mountains and get us on the next available plane.

I definitely plan on going on another trip with Amazon Explorer in the future. I would recommend them to anyone looking for an adventure. When I try to explain my trip to coworkers, everyone's reaction is, "How do you even find a trip like this????" Honestly, the only reason I found them was through some hard digging on google. I'm glad I did find them though because there aren't any other tour groups out there like Amazon Explorer.

My partner and I traveled through much of the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, Ecuador and Colombia.
We contacted Amazon Explorer to make a 30-day expedition to an unexplored place in the Peruvian jungle. Hector, the owner of the agency, attended us with kindness and professionalism found in few, he also promised to guide this expedition for us. This was a special expedition in an area where no tourists go.
In my opinion, I have never enjoyed nature and wildlife so much, it was amazing!
Given the conditions of this expedition, due to the unexplored terrain and the number of days (30) it was very well organized. We recognize the professionalism and knowledge of the jungle that Hector and Amazon Explorer team have, they were incredible. A great team.

The best company and guides with the greatest knowledge of wildlife, AN INCREDIBLE TRIP!

We explore the Amazon jungle for 10 days with Amazon Explorer. We saw a quantity and variety of fauna, thanks to the experience and knowledge of Hector and Dennis. We went to a remote area, where we didn't see any tourists during our entire trip. The organization was excellent, considering the remoteness of the place where we were, the varied and delicious food, and the activities were amazing, both during the day and at night. Thanks to the knowledge of our guides, we were able to see many animals such as the tapir, the peccary and even an ocelot. At night we waited in silence in the clay licks deep in the jungle.

We absolutely recommend this company.

We wish to return in a few years for an adventure of more days.

Thanks to the entire Amazon Explorer team!

A friend and myself made a 3-weeks-expedition with Hector, the main guide, and Dennis, a native Matsès that knows a lot about the jungle. The expedition was not one of the existing ones but we designed our adventure together and specific to our needs. Hector is a honest man and he loves what he's doing which makes it very fun and pleasing to travel with him and with Amazon Explorer!

The expedition was awesome and exactly how we wanted and Hector helped us even after our adventure to prepare our next expedition.

I strongly recommend traveling with them!

I spent 40 days in the Jungle on a high risk Expedition with Amazon Explorer. (Hector, Dennis, Armando, George, Armando Jr. and Silvia the cook) The adventure was REAL. This trip was tailor made to my requests. Since I travelled solo, it was very important for me to have a reliable and trustworthy team with me which I found in Amazon Explorer. I was able to count on every member if the team. They went out if their ways to make everything possible for me. I can highly recommend this company in any respect. They are worth their money. They truly value integrity. Very professional and still providing the personal touch. Honestly, I would not do this trip with any other company. Trip of a lifetime!

Hola Claudia! It was a pleasure to share this 40 day adventure with you. More than a traveler, you are a true warrior. Few people dare to enter the unexplored jungle for 40 days as you did. The whole team was impressed with you, for your endurance, adaptability and spirit of adventure. You were part of the team. Claudia... Thank you for choosing us...! Hector V.

So much has happened and there is so much to say about Hector and this fantastic expedition! Many of us have seen tropical animals, rainforest, and native tribes on TV or in magazines, and for me that always seemed like something I would never get to see in person. This trip has changed all that. The animals, the forest, everything, is as amazing as I always imagined it to be. I never thought I would get the chance to see a sloth, a toucan, a pink nosed dolphin, a piranha (let alone eat one!), those big eyed tiny monkeys, wild capuchin monkeys, wild boars, canoe down the amazon, and the list just keeps going.

Some of the most memorable moments include: a thrilling night hike where we ran into a stampede of about a hundred wild boars, a disney-like downstream canoe trip at night time looking for nocturnal animals (or sleeping alligators) in the trees with flashlights, and playing a pretty serious game of soccer with natives. We also drank water from tree vines, ate fresh palm heart (also yucca and wild boars), hunted with a bow and arrow, and got to experience some of the most unique ritual and social activities of the tribes.

The trip concluded with a bang; a 2-day 50km hike through the forest to the city of Requena, where we took an iconic motor boat (and then a bus) back to the city of Iquitos. All along this hike we had to walk through swamps and massive mud puddles, avoid and gaze at the unbelievable wildlife, carry our back packs over our heads as we crossed deep river streams, and truly bond with the Matses natives that helped us make it through the trail. When in Requena, we continued to explore the town, sight seeing, and learning more than we thought we would about Peru.

Having said that, this was still a challenging trip. We got bit by bugs (at least I did), slept on hard floor (bring a blow up mattress or pad!), washed ourselves in the rain (or river), and sweated buckets every day. And despite all that, I would do all of those things all over again to re-experience this trip! Hector, Armando, Wagner, and the rest of the team have been fantastic to talk to and learn from. They took care of setting everything up and made sure to make this trip very comfortable. I highly recommend Amazon Explorer, I promise you it's packed with action that I wish I could keep talking about forever.

We just returned from a 5 day trip to Pacaya Samaria with Amazon explorer. The trip was just as advertised.

The Good/Great: Our guide who picked us up in Iquitos, Baulo, was very good as was our native guide Lorenzo. I traveled with two grandchildren (boys) and a 19 year old nephew.

We spent a total of 5 days (including travel), splitting time between camping in the jungle (2 nights) and spending the bookend days at a local village (Buenos Aires, where Lorenzo and his family reside.)

They tailored the trip to accommodate the limitations of travel with the kids as well as me, being on the south side of 64. We did plenty of excursions, both via jungle hikes of 2-3 hours and on the canoe.

We saw Caiman, plenty of monkeys and numerous other jungle and river creatures, including several species of fresh water dolphins. We fished and caught (and ate) various species including Piranha.

The two younger and 19 year old had an absolutely awesome time.

But Beware: This is a very safe and educational experience, but only marginally comfortable, especially for us on the south side of middle age. The two nights accommodations in the village are very spartan, and quite frankly sleeping in the local homes was less comfortable than the camping. And the camping involved setting up a canvas cover in case of rain, under which the two kids slept in a small tent and we slept in what was basically a mosquito net cocoon with minimal padding, about six feet long and two feet high, sort of a mosquito protected coffin..... No real furniture other than a picnic table that they constructed for meals for the 5 days.

The seating on motorized canoe/launch they used for the long trips from the port of departure (the town of Nautica) to the village (about 3 hours) and from the village to our camp site (2 hours) in each direction had minimal back support and the canoe they used for exploring (often trips of two hours or longer) had no back support.

And of course the jungle is..... hot, humid, uneven surfaces and muddy, and because this is not a lodge trip, there is no escape from these conditions.

Of course, this is what I expected and wanted, but by the end of the 5 days I was ready for a shower, A/C and furniture with backing when we got back to Iquitos.

The food was adequate and plentiful, and prepared on a propane stove both in the village and at the campsite. But just expect basic grub, with plenty of carbs. Two in our party (we were joined by one other person) were gluten intolerant and they accommodated their dietary needs. MOST IMPORTANTLY, the food was prepared sufficiently so that we had no GI issues (especially for the young boys).

So if you want a genuine (if lite) jungle experience and the opportunity to see what the semi-integrated but poor indigenous live like, this is the trip for you and you will come away with an appreciation for the jungle and indigenous culture.

During May-June 2018 I took part in a 1,000km expedition through the Amazon jungle (the particularly dangerous Sierra del Divisor area in Peru near the border with Brasil) led by Amazon Explorer. This expedition took 30 days and involved hiking on foot through completely unexplored jungle in search of the headwaters of the Yaquerana River and then making canoes from Pona trees to paddle back to civilisation. We were accompanied by a number of Matses tribesmen, a translator, as well as Hector and George. While the expedition was planned to take up to 60 days, we completed it in half that time by taking advantage of unexpectedly high (but rapidly dropping) water levels in the Rio Yaquerana and thanks to a well executed plan.

I have nearly 15 years experience as a Special Forces operator and as such, expect high levels of detail in planning for expeditions such as this. The planning and execution conducted by Amazon Explorer was excellent and at all times our group felt secure, informed and focused. Hector and George assembled the very best people for this at times arduous trek and were able to respond to every situation that confronted them with poise and confidence. During the course of the expedition the entire group formed a strong bond and remained focused on the tasks of hunting, fishing, camp preparation and security.

The level of jungle survival skills and instruction shown by the Matses tribesman was absolutely second to none and I learned a great deal more than I had previously known.

Overall, this unique expedition was meticulously planned, organised and conducted to a very high level by all members of the Amazon Explorer staff and I am very grateful for all of the assistance provided to our group by them. I unreservedly recommend Hector, George and all of the staff at Amazon Explorer for any Amazon jungle expeditions as they are the best in the business.

Gracias hermanos!

There was so much to rave about on this trip that I don't even know where to start, so this is going to be a lengthy review.

Or you can take my short answer: Book it now if you are searching for a rare experience and an authentic adventure with a group of incredible people. Do NOT book if you are looking for a posh eco lodge where luxurious comfort is valued over raw experience. This trip will challenge you and reward you with an experience of a lifetime (literally).

I booked the 15-day Matsés expedition with Hector (owner) a few months before the expedition. There was an expedition already planned during the dates I was available so I just hopped in with that trip. To my surprise, there was only one other person on the expedition, which was great.

Hector and his assistant (who translates Hector’s Spanish into English in email correspondence with clients) is quick to reply and accommodating on making the trip and booking process work for you.

One concern I had initially was that the deposit/payment must be done via Western Union. Since this was all electronic communication before sending my hefty deposit, I was a little nervous about just wiring money down to Peru. DO NOT worry about this though. Hector is an incredibly trustworthy (and passionate) guy and everything went fine and as said with the payments.

My fellow traveler and our translator/Amazon Explorer guide (Jose, who was the best guide I’ve ever had. Great sense of humor to boot) flew on a military aircraft with a handful of other Peruvians from Iquitos to Angamos, a small outpost on the Peruvian/Brazilian border. Once we landed on the dirt runway of Angamos we were greeted by our three Matsés guides: Armando and his two sons, Hernan and Denis. Later in the trip, Hernan’s wife Delia joined us as well.

The four of them spoke Matsés and Spanish, so they would speak to Jose in Spanish who would then translate to English, and vice versa. Jose's English was very proficient.

You can check out the Amazon Explorer website for a full expedition itinerary (which Hector made clear is highly customizable), but in “short” I want to say that I will be forever grateful for the generosity, warm welcome, and incredible experience that Armando, Hernan, Denis, Delia and Jose all worked so hard to provide. I consider them all lifelong friends after this experience and I look forward to visiting them again in the future.

One more point: While he was not with us on the expedition, it was apparent that Hector (owner of Amazon Explorer) has established a wonderful relationship with the Matsés, which is a large part of why I believe we were so warmly welcomed (many Matsés asked about Hector with a big smile during our travels). He does not take advantage of indigenous groups as I’ve heard many of the more commercial jungle outfitters do. He treats them as business partners, and he is passionate about protecting the rainforest the Matsés depend on. This was important to me and it blatantly contributed to the high quality experience that the expedition provided. Other jungle outfitters should take note.

I’m happy to speak with anyone who is thinking about booking this trip to share more about my experience, so please do not hesitate to reach out. Thanks.

The expedition was really good. My tour guide Marden organized it very well and the local guide Herman was really knowledgeable about the djungle.
The only bad thing was that the others whom were going to join the expedition canceled the day before, and Amazon Explorer wanted me to pay more for a private one. I agreed to a little higher price. However, I am not sure I should have since they had confirmed the booking long before and I had paid for some of it in advance.

Hola Tolpag, Thank you very much for your review! We are glad that your jungle experience was unforgettable. About the issue, we understand your discomfort. A solo expedition is usually 70% more expensive. In a first moment, we gave you the rate for 3 travelers, but when the couple whom were you going to join the expedition canceled the day before, we required to ask you a small amount more in order to cover the costs. Our main target is that travelers experience the real jungle and get unforgettale memories, hence, we gave our best in order to you enjoy the rainforest. Additionally, If someday you want to come back, you and/or your relatives will have a special rate. Our best regards, Hector Vezirian AMAZON EXPLORER
