Just finished a 10 day retreat in Selva Madre and I would recommend it to anyone interested in trying ayahuasca. The location in the jungle is beautful and peaceful. There is no wifi or electricity, which to me was a big plus and allowed you to disconnect and consider your intentions. The shamen were fantastic and very attentive to our individual needs. Personally, I had trouble getting much out of ayahuasca but they were very patient and gave me good advice on how to open to the experience. Leave your expectations at the port and come with an open mind!

It’s been almost 8 months since my Ayahuasca experience at Selva Madre and I’m still processing. I happen to be the only person to arrive for the 10 day retreat because borders were still a issue for most. Another guest arrived close to my halfway point and we remain friends until this day.

I can tell you that Don Lucho, Monica and there sons did not cut one corner even-though I was the only attendee. It’s a experience that I will eternally be grateful for.

My advice to future guest:

Leave any expectations at the door, it’s a different journey for everyone. Like a fingerprint, none 2 exactly alike.

Be sure to wear lose comfortable clothing. Boots for the times you go on a tour of the Amazon and slides for the times you are at the compound.

There is absolutely no way to charge electronic devices so please plan to bring your own battery and or solar panel.

Try to learn enough Spanish so that you are able to communicate with Don Lucho your visions especially the next day after ceremony. Don Lucho Jr. speaks English fluently.

Be sure to have multiple flashlights, journal, books and if you are one of the few to be able to get cell tower service, be sure to download whats app for communication.

Have a few audio books to help pass time, you can only journal but so much :-/

Customs took all of the repellent I bought with me so good luck with that.

Clothes are washed by hand and a natural no scent bar soap is best to have.

There is no hot water but honestly you don’t care after the first shower.

There is no such thing as ice or refrigeration on the compound.

The hammock in your room will become your best friend.

Don Lucio is one of the greatest men I’ve met. He has a wealth of knowledge and is revered by all that know him and work for him. The ceremonies are incredible... other worldly. The icaros (chanting) and attention given to each participant is enough to bring you to tears.

There are two other shamans, Anderson and Luis Jr who are also exceptional and staged a ceremony when do Lucio couldn’t attend for health reasons.

It isn’t as strict a diet as many of the other retreats and the food is incredibly healthy, nutritious and tasty.

Contrary to many of the other retreats, don Lucio and his team brew the ayahuasca in the true form and do not cater for the ‘tourist’ crowd. According to some sources, other retreats add things like angels trumpet which can be lethal in order for the participant to have an even more crazy trip which is unnecessary and can be dangerous.

The love and care that you experience here is second to none and I have no hesitation in highly recommending this retreat. It helped me a lot.

Thank you for trusting us with your Ayahuasca experience. You are correct, we are NOT touristy and we seek to help those in need with the powerful and teachable medicine of the Amazon Jungle. Selva Madre is happy for you to be a part of our family as you are not a client to us but part of us forever. Many blessings from your entire family at Selva Madre.

What an amazing retreat! I don't think I could of picked a better place. The Shaman Don Lucho is extremely knowledgeable and has helped me tremendously. I had so many health issues and the ayahuasca diet was so delicious and healthy. I actually ate more there than when I'm home and lost weight! (not on purpose). The entire family has their part in the retreat and really makes you love them. They are so hard not to love. It is the right place. I found out that the money from the retreats actually goes to the villages and people in need from the surrounding communities. Don Lucho the main Shaman really cares for people and and soley interested in helping others. In the 10 day retreat you get 4 Ayahauasca ceremonies which were so helpful for my healing and understanding of myself. Best experience Ever!!!!!

Wonderful experience, great shamans (which was the main concern for me going in) but I was able to trust them really quickly because they were sincere with their goals. Also I want to thank Weyder, he was great in being around and helping with everything needed. The group I met there was great and made the experience more enjoyable. The experience took some getting used to because of the weather & no wifi & other amenities but after a few days I adapted and felt present with the environment. The Ayahuasca was both uncomfortable and very comforting at times & I learned to accept both. I still feel the medicines healing effects even weeks after and have more clearity in my thought processes so I will definitely be back for more.

I went back after a year to do a second retreat bc I felt I had to finish my personal work I had started there.
I already left a great review the first time I came. Nothing has changed. This place is still as beautiful as before. I love the work the shamans Don Lucho, Luis jr. , and Anderson do. They really are great shamans and have helped me a lot.
The entire facility is still beautiful and great and just about what you need for a good detox in the amazon. The food as always was a lot, various and great!
Everybody is so nice and friendly and has a great positive attitude and mind. It’s really a place to heal and I’m so happy I choose this retreat and this shamans in the first place and now again. I will be back one day. Thank you so much to everybody who workes at and for Selva madre. You made my stay great! 🙏🏼 much love Jasmin 💓

I realy enjoyed my first ayauahasca experience at Selva madre retreat centre. Even if the ayauahasca wasnt so strong that I expected, I was taken deep in my mind to explore my thoughts and memories. I realy appreciate amazingly positive Don Lucho and his beautiful icarus. Also other shamans Luis jr. and Anderson did an amazing job.
During our free time we were treated like a gods by always helping Weyder, our chef Bermudes and his daughters.
I can realy recomend this retreat! Amazing vibes, comfortable accomodation, good food and safe aya experience!

I found this Maestro and his family in April 2021. It was great and I will go back! The best shamen in Iquitos. The food and the family are great. Right in the middle of the Peruvian jungle and there are four ceremonies. Healing ceremonies.

After reading all the raving reviews I was sure this was the place for me to go to. Unfortunately, the experience of my group and me was way different than described by the others here.

Let me begin with the positives: the retreat is situated in a nice patch of jungle, the food tastes good and the facilities are very basic but sufficient.

This, however, is not what I visited the retreat for. I wanted to experience some great Ayahuasca ceremonies and healing. I got none. No visions, no insights, not even a sense of "tripping" for the lack of a better word.

I don't know why the Ayahuasca had little to no effect on me. Maybe it's because they only boil the Ayahuasca for 8 hours which leaves you with a weak brew? Maybe it's because they only offer a second dose during the second ceremony whereas they promised to do this during ceremony 2, 3 and 4? Maybe it's because the food they give to you is completely different than the diet other shamans prescribe (e.g. dairy, oil and a compulsory pinch of salt on ceremony days) ???

As you can see we're left with a lot of questions. I would have loved to ask them to the shaman, which seems like a very reasonable request to me. However, Don [--] was completely unavailable, even after multiple requests and promises he would sit down with us. The website states that after every ceremony you will sit down with the head Shaman but instead, all my briefings consisted of a 5 min talk about how I "have to be patient and let the medicine do it's work". After 4 ceremonies without any effect they suggested me to wait for 3 months and check back in with them.

It's weird how our experience differs so much from the rest of the reviews. I have to say that most people in my group got serious visions and insights. None of us got the feeling of magic and love from the retreat and it's employrees that others describe though. In fact, it felt more like a money making machine.

The ceremonies only last just over 2 hours, there is no personal attention/singing/ritual performing during ceremonies, and you only get 1 cup of a weak brew (half a cup the first ceremony, and your strongly advised to take a half one the last ceremony too).

All in all, this retreat has been a big deception for me. I was sure I couldn't go wrong with this place but I left a grand poorer and a disillusion richer. Obviously, the fact that I didn't experience any noticeable effects is key for feeling this way. There is a possibility this is because of my own mental or physical state. What struck me though is that I didn't get any personal attention, treatment or even reassuring words. It's completely nuts that a business man who makes big big money can't be bothered to even spend fifteen minutes on a conversation when a customer doesn't get anything out of his assembly line way of working.

I just returned from a 10 day 4 session Ayahuasca retreat at Selva Madre. If you are looking for an authentic Ayahuasca experience at a fraction of the cost of other retreats I looked into then I would highly suggest Selva Madre. You actually live on the same premises as the shaman and his adult children and wife who all cook, clean and care for the facility and the guests. I can not speak highly enough of these people. They are all so kind and caring. Shaman Don Luis is a second generation shaman & is perhaps the kindest, humblest and most good natured person I have ever met. It is so refreshing to meet someone who is so dedicated to their craft and financial compensation is not the primary concern. Don Luis eats his family's incredibly healthy meals with us & is always available and excited to share his insight and wisdom. You are in the jungle with limited electricity, no internet, and basin rain water showers are always filled in your neatly kept huts. Don Luis works with in the 4 ceremonies (Earth, Fire, Water, Air) and doesn't necessarily blast you out of the water so to speak like I have heard and seen some of the other retreats do. He has great respect and the sanctity and brew of pure Ayahuasca Vine and chacruna that is grown and brewed on the property with no other additives. I have no other retreats to compare it to other than what I researched online before I went and I couldn't have asked for a better more enriching experience. He will accept you at anytime with no set dates. Ceremonies are Monday Wednesday and Friday so you can plan your 4 ceremonies accordingly. They also included taking us to a local very small petting zoo and to see the Boras Tribes. I hope you have as positive experience as I had
