About
A Sanctuary for Healing in the Heart of the Amazon The Ayahuasca retreat, under the expert guidance of Maestro Don Ron Wheelock at El Purguero, is a profound journey of self-discovery and transformation. With nearly three decades of experience in the ayahuasca community, Don Ron stands out as one of the most knowledgeable and powerful healers in the Amazon. His unique blend of Western roots and deep integration into Peruvian shamanic traditions makes El Purguero the ideal destination for those seeking profound healing and spiritual growth. El Purguero is not just another ayahuasca retreat in Iquitos—it’s a place where participants can connect deeply with the jungle, the medicine and themselves.

This place is amazing. I left El Purguero with experiences and knowledge that will inevitably shape my life for years to come. Don Ron is a fantastic guide, knowledgeable teacher, and his team are lovely. The food is simple (as it should be) but good. The facilities are more than sufficient, and apparently quite good compared to other retreats but I have nothing to compare to. This is a place for healing and growth.

My husband and I have been visiting El Purguero with Don Ron Wheelock for nearly 10 years. We have received so much healing both as individuals and as a couple through the ayahuasca journey guided by Don Ron. It's hard work but the most rewarding thing I've ever done. Highly recommend!!

It was my second time but first at Ron. His medicine is strong, if you are looking for a deep change, a body or soul healing, yes it is for you. If you are looking for a guided retreat, with yoga, diet and circles, no this is not. Still he is giving a lot of info and teaching. Thanks Ron.

As much as I like Ron, I feel there are better places to experience Ayahuasca. Ron's icaros are amazing and he holds a good ceremony. The reason I went to a western Shaman is because I wanted someone who could translate the messages I had post ceremony, but Ron isn't good at this and he's the first to admit it, I wish I knew this before signing up.
There aren't many things to do during the day, I thought there would've been some outings or even some bush walks, anything would've been good, there was just nothing really.
The food was very average, the mattresses are terrible and I just feel the place is a bit run down and in need of some care.
Hopefully Ron can take this as constructive criticism and improve on some of the things to make it better for others.

Don Ron as the Gringo Shaman has jump over most of local possibilities. In the epoch of high attraction to spiritual development El Purguero is the place for real experience for thouse who like the extreme extension of their consciousness.

I just got back with another Group from Ron Wheelocks Camp El Purguero.
It was my 4th time to Peru and I have seen in these years different shaman, included some of Ron's teachers. And to me, none of them can hold up to "the Gringo shaman" Ron Wheelock. A down to earth, loving and honest person. That knows how to brew a very strong Ayahuasca and is able to deliver a ceremony that will change you for ever.
If you are the type of person, that really wants to change, than Ron is a perfect match for you.
If you think, that among all the "Drugs" you did, that you want to know Ayahuasca as well, since its is on your bucked list... stay away, as far as you can. Than it will tear you apart.
Ayahuasca is not a party drug nor something on the list, you want to scratch of. It is serious work with oneself on all levels. Mental, physical and emotional.
Make sure, you respect that.

I visited Ron 5 years ago and his medicine has changed my life. Ron's Medicine is powerful. This is what I needed to go deep to the root cause of my illness. I have sat with other healers holding space and there medicine has been mild and less effective for me. Ron is an amazing soul with only the purest intentions for all. His medicine helped me to fully understand why I was suffering with depression/ social phobia and after my first sitting I was cured from all my illnesses. He has been a great role model for me in life. Some one I look up to and respect. God Bless

This place is beautiful. Completely off the grid, i haven't slept this well in years. The people here will make living in the jungle as comfortable as possible. Already thinking about my next trip.

Hey man, just curious as th where else you would recommend for a better aya experience as you stated that there were better places out there. This will be my first time and I am not too concerned with rustic dwellings as having a good aya experience is my main concern. Thanks!

Well, if you really look for a safe and the better experience and you don't mind it to be basic. You're definitely at the right place :)
Friendly greetings,
Nick
