My friends and I did the 1 day Apurimac tour in August 2021. It was a fantastic time, our guide made the experience more enjoyable by allowing us to play rafting games, cliff jump, and stop at some waterfalls. However, for experienced rafters, the rapids were more in the class 3 range than the class 4 range due to August not being an ideal month to go. Overall, highly recommend the experience.

River Explorers did a fantastic job orchestrating the whole trip for our family. From handling airtickets from Lima to Cusco, Hotel reservations in Cusco & AguasC, Train tickets from Cusco to AguasC to entry tickets to all locations including Machu Picchu they took care of everything. Their guide is very knowledgeable, professional and was very good with kids. Their driver was excellent and the vehicle they provided was spacious, sparkling clean and very comfortable. The restaurants they took us to lunches were top notch and classy. Most importantly their communication was exceptional. We had everything from Travel Itinerary, Agenda and eTickets for Train, Entry to Machu Picchu etc even before we left the US. They even did online checkin for our flights and left the boarding passes in the hotel reception! River Explorers made sure our trip was memorable and exceptionally smooth.

I just returned from a 10-day tour through Peru with River Explorers and it was truly the trip of a lifetime. I work in the travel industry, so I know how much work it takes to pull off a trip like this, and they really knocked it out of the park! I worked with the office staff for more than 2 years, through several pandemic delays, changing logistics and regulations, and the staff was never anything but responsive, upbeat, and accommodating. Once we arrived, we had incredible transportation in private luxury buses, fantastic local guides (Juan Carlos was a particular standout), incredible expeditions, beautiful scenery, and delicious food. Our only complaint is that the trip had to end! We will absolutely be back to Peru and will travel with River Explorers again!

We did the Apurimac Granite canyon 3 day trip and we had an absolute blast. Our group size was small, just my partner and I, but Ronald, Manolo, and Ruben made us feel safe while having a blast. Given the low water, this was a technical trip. The guides 20+ years of experience made us feel at ease as we maneuvered tough rapids. We did walk 4 portages (class 5 rapids), however, we did not feel we lacked on fun, intense rapids. Our guides were exceptional in the kitchen as well. Our meals were some of the best we have experienced in Peru, and never lacked in plenty. My partner and I both have prior rafting experience, as passengers and as guides. We felt this river was perfect for advanced or experienced passengers who are looking for a beautiful and fun adventure, yet respect the challenges this river brings. Can’t wait to come back!

My friend and I did the 3 day Apurimac tour in November 2020 (and apparently were the only two to run it the entire year). Even in the midst of Covid chaos everything went off without a hitch. The guides were amazing, professional, fun, knowledgeable and extremely qualified (Neil, Bacteria [Victor], Rene, and Renaldo really made our trip). We had a variety of fresh, delicious food every day (they even brought a bottle of wine). Camp was comfortable and dry and they went out of their way to set up canopies every night just in case we caught rain. The river is stunning and the campsites were unbelievable. Their expertise made the river seem far easier than we know it is. When we go back we will only book with them (and will request them in Chile when we finally get over there). The river water does get pretty chilly despite wetsuits- bring an extra layer that can get wet.

These guys went above and beyond to give us a wonderful experience! For example, our flight was delayed for two hours, and these guys waited for us at the airport the whole time. Granted it was a private tour so that isn’t always possible, but they were patient and helpful and excellent the whole time. They were all very experienced, lunch was amazing, and they really went above and beyond. Communication was excellent throughout the booking process and after. Highly recommended!

My boyfriend and I did river rafting, the Inca Trail, and Machu Picchu with Juan Carlos. He was amazing and we had such a great time! Juan Carlos was so knowledgeable and passionate about the Peruvian history and culture. He offered to take many pictures of us, which we really appreciated. We are so happy to have pictures to look back on of this wonderful experience. I would definitely recommend doing a private tour with him - you won’t be disappointed!

My friend and I booked a 1 Day Rating Trip on the Upper Urubamba and had an AMAZING day. The organization/our guides were very communicative beforehand and picked us up right from our hotel the morning of. It was just us two on the trip and we had two guides (one in a safety kayak) plus a driver for the two of us! Carlos and Ellie were amazing guides and provided us with all of the safety information and also were so much fun to raft with! We finished after a few hours and our driver had a lovely lunch waiting for us on the river! We had such a great time with our group that we were tempted to book another day trip with them but we just didn't have enough time in our schedule. We cannot say enough good things about this organization and our wonderful guides/driver: Carlos, Ellie and Walter! Highly Recommend!

At a friends recommendation, we selected River Explorers to help us put together a custom itinerary for our visit to Cusco and various points and cities of interest as well as the one day hike to Machu Picchu. Our trip consisted of six days starting with a few days in Cusco to acclimate to the high altitude. We had the same guide during our entire stay which gave us consistency and gave us a chance to build up a comfort level and rapport with him which made it more enjoyable. Our guide was knowledgeable, courteous and flexible to our needs.

Hello! My friend and I a thinking about doing the 1 day or 2 days tour on the Apurimac Black Canyon middle of October 2018. Is the tour also suitbale for non experienced rafting people? I read that the Black Canyon Tour is a bit easier. What about the class IV rapids in this section? Are they manageable for beginners? @ Past Visitors: Do you have any experience with it? Thank you.

We went in May and the water level and rapids were very good. But our actual time on the river was 2 hours and then lunch was provided. With transportation it took the whole day. We were ages 20-65 but had all rafted before. It was swift moving trip with lots of 2's maybe occasional 3. With all the gear and guides we always felt safe.

What kind of wetsuits do you use? How do you ensure that you have all sizes?
Ashley A
2 contributions
Hi there. We were given full length wetsuits, a pair of shorts and a long sleeve top to put over the top of the wetsuit, a pair of boat shoes (which is important because the river has rocks in it) and a helmet. I also chose to wear my baseball cap under the helmet to help protect against sun burn. They bought a range of different size wetsuits etc - so everyone was able to find something in their size. Like the previous person says, I would highly recommend wearing your swim suit underneath. You get pretty wet regardless of whether you get into the water or not (as you get splashed from the waves even if you just stay in the raft etc). Also, (and you don't have to do this if you don't want to) - there was an opportunity to jump off a large rock into the river - and you will get wet doing that (we all ended up fully submerged). You can lock all you gear (including a change of clothes) into their van (which is attended by a member of staff at all times) and when you are finished and ready for the (really yum) lunch they provide, you just grab your gear out of the van and get changed in a little tent they erect on the river bank for you.

Hi---I am traveling from Lima to Sacred Valley to MP back to Cusco in April with 4 20-somethings. We would love to do a 1/2 day rafting trip--is that possible? If so, would it be easier from Cusco, Ollantaytambo or Aguas Callientes (I am planning to be at all 3 during the week)?
Thank you
Ann

Hello there,
Depending the time of the year you can choose different sections on the Urubamba River. Fom may to December I'll recommend the rain forest rafting,t his section offer rafting for beginners, intermediate and advanced. Great rapids with volume of water and the best warm weather ranging from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius, makes this perfect for rafting. The second section is the upper Urubamba close to Cusco. Offer good rapids with low volume of water.During January to April I'll definitely recommend the upper part. River Explorers offers safe and fun tours both in the upper and lower section.
