I can't say enough about the crew at ITTC. I had trekked in Peru previously and had been really upset by the condition of the people working for the trek company, and was protein deficient for lack of good food. I vowed that this time I would make better decisions. A friend of mine introduced me to Kelly and Ruben, who started and run ITTC, and right away knew that this was the trek company I was looking for. Kelly & Ruben were quick to reply, had great and informative answers to all of my questions, and arranged everything for my best friend and I to do the Salkantay Hike. In addition they also arranged my parents' travel to meet us in AC and visit Macchu Picchu with us, and for all of us to take the train back to Cusco together. They were kind, helpful, & professional and over many months of planning we got to know each other fairly well - and finally got to meet up together in Cusco. Their team is incredible, and is made up of almost all family or friends. The passion and love for the mountains of Peru are present in every interaction we had with everyone. Mariela, Joseph, Raul, and Teo made our time in country - from arranging and hosting our pre-trek meeting, to getting us to the trail and picking us up from the train, to our time on the trail. EVERYTHING was taken care of, and we had an amazing time. My friend and I were the only ones in our hiking group - which meant we got to go our own pace, and got to know our guide, Raul, very well. He's funny, a great spirit, knowledgeable about history of the area we hiked through, and is a fellow plant nerd - so we had a great time hiking & taking breaks to look at plants, find viscacha, or talk about the mountains we were in. Because of Raul's love of the place we were and the time we had to go at our own pace, we were fully able to appreciate the beauty of the incredible places we found ourselves along the trail. Raul has been guiding in the valley for his entire adult life, and seemingly knew everyone, so we were always getting updates and glimpses into the local goings-on of the incredibly kind folks we met living along the trail. Teo, our cook - nay chef - made some of the best meals I've had on or off the trail. My Mom is disabled & with Raul's patience and guidance was able to enjoy exploring ruins at MP that she never thought should would get to do. If I trek in Peru again - it will only be with the family at ITTC. I recommend them to everyone I tell about our incredible Salkantay hike!

Myself and my friend Oliver, had an amazing time trekking along the Inca trail. Our guide Jesus was fantastic, very informative, relaxed, funny and friendly. The food was delicious and the scenery was otherworldly. Defiantly recommend this tour, if you wanna hike the Inca trail.

We heard a lot of things about that Inca trail and Machu Picchu and decides that this year was the year... Did a lot of research... read a lot of reviews, spoke to friends that made the treck... Finally, I got in touch with Ruben... he answered all my questions and was extremely helpful in the preparation of the trip. He took care of every little detail from the very beginning to the end... he even come himself to pick us up at the train station to make sure everything was perfect and that we enjoyed the treck... asking questions on how he can improve, etc... Make sure you have some time in Cusco before the treck to acclimate to the altitude... this can be hazardous if your body does not respond well to altitude... believe me... 42 km in the mountains was amazing.. First day is the « practice day »... challenging but accessible. Second day, 10 km... through the dead woman, pass... 4 200 meters... you need a minimum fit ... thousands of steps... but the experience is amazing... altitude sickness may become a challenge... chew coca leaves, drink coca tea, make sure you have altitude medecines and everything will be ok. The third day is the longest one but the most beautiful... mountains, trail, level of challenge, archeological sites, etc... The last day, only 2 hours and you get out of the jungle at the sun gate, with a great view on Machu Picchu... a lot of emotion... and Machu Picchu is just amazing... can not say more... this is the gift after all those efforts... Be prepared and fit and make sure you bring proper boots and equipements ... Camping, toilettes (well.... you do what you can in the jungle :-) ) and cold shower... you need to be prepared for a little less confort compare to home... but ... deserved it very much. The food was great... Hot tea many times a day, good breakfast to get the required energy, snack, lunch, snack, diner... very good every time... Very surprising if you take into account that porters have to carry everything from camp to camp... food, chairs, tents, propane, plates, etc.. Those porters are incredibles. I was barely able to climb the steps because I was exhausted... those people carry huge bags of material and they run to prepare the next camp, the food, the tents, etc... just amazing.. Finally our guide.. Jesus. Without him it would have been difficult to enjoyed. He was there, guiding use, providing advices, helping us while I was suffering from altitude sickness, adapting the rythme to us. Knowledgeable about every archeological site, history, plants, animals. Solving every little problem we were facing, taking time to communicate with us. He was an angel to us, making sure that we enjoyed our treck... I saw many guides from other company and I think we were lucky to have him with us. Would I recommend that company ? Definitively yes !!!

I'd like to start this review by saying that my experience with the Inca Trail Trekking Company was 100% amazing. Ruben and his sister Mariela have fostered a "family-style" atmosphere with their company and it shows! Everything happened exactly as planned. Even before we (my close friend and I) set foot in Peru, Ruben and Mariela took the time to answer all email questions promptly. The process of signing up for the trek was smooth and trouble-free. Once in Peru, Mariela and our guide, Wilbert, showed up at our Air B&B right on time for the pre-trek briefing. They answered all questions. As it turns out, possibly due to our booking this trip in the start of the rainy season, there were only two of us in the ITTC group. We joined up with another group, led by Mary, whom Ruben and Mariela knew and were joined by six wonderful people from Argentina. Even with eight total people, our group was smaller than most which was so nice. On the trail all needs were met and all details explained. We were allowed a great deal of freedom. Wilbert was able to gauge the groups level of fitness and provided ideas for side-trips for some of the stronger hikers. Each night he explained the details of the next day. Wilbert used key strategies to put our group ahead of other groups, or maneuvered us to avoid the throngs of trekking companies. We saw very few folks on the trail except at camp each night. The food was wonderful, the porters were friendly and professional, everything was ready when we got to camp and was expertly attended to. Wilbert had a good relationship with the porters which proved helpful. ***Please bring at least 100 PEN to tip the porters...they work their butts off and deserve it. This is explained pre-trip. Many in our group did not bring anywhere near enough. It was an insult to the porter's hard work. I strongly believe in tipping for a job well done.*** Wilbert took the time to explain the myriad Incan ruins along the trail (there are many) as well as Incan culture and current culture. He was knowledgeable in flora and fauna and spoke wonderful English as well as local, native languages. He scheduled many key breaks along the way. Once at Machu Picchu, Wilbert gave us time to explore on our own, and also led us on a guided tour, explaining many of the smaller details of Incan culture. There were a few bumps along the way as can be expected. One in our group had to pull out after day one due to heart issues (he and his wife met up with us at Machu Picchu---turns out the heart issues were unknown and serious!) and the other guide, Mary, led them out. Wilbert took on the rest of the group and continued the trek. I apologize for the length of this review, but I can't say enough about how great this experience was. You could spend A LOT more money on one of the "fancy" trekking companies but I wouldn't. I watched those dynamics and it was ugly at times. If you want the porters with fancy shirts, banners, mess tents and gear, go for it, spend the money, but you would be better served by Ruben and his smaller outfit. Much more personal and intimate...FAMILY! I would definitely recommend them and would use them again. You'll feel like family and not just a client. ***Oh, another thing, Ruben was able to arrange a one-day Lake Humantay tour for us, as well as help us get bus tickets to Lake Titicaca. We even had an unexpected change in our plans after the trek and Ruben and Mariela were able to find us a room in their hostel and arrange for a private driver to take us to the Incan grass bridge. They did all of this for us and it wasn't even part of the trek!!!***

This trip was a real success, we enjoyed every bit of it. Every detail was well planned, we didn’t need to worry about anything such as bus, train tickets, permits etc. The guide, Fredi was amazing and he shared with us at each step, the history and culture of the Incas. Ruben, our contact from the company was very professional and he ensured we are well looked after, informing us all the time about trip details. Even though we went in November the weather was really good, we were very lucky and the company of the group was even better. The food was delicious and our cook was spoiling us with different amazing dishes every day. The porters were waking us up every morning with a nice hot cup of tea which we really enjoyed. We defenetelly recommend it !!!
