Very poor value for money
Jul 2019 • Couples
We did the 2 days 1 night tour which cost $700 in total for two people. Before the tour even began we had issues communicating with the tour company, where we had to keep emailing them asking where we were meeting, at what time etc. The night before the tour began at 11.30pm we were told that we had to buy entrance tickets at an extra 140 soles (turns out we didn't as we explained to them (twice) that they had stated entrance tickets were included), and that the remaining $350 from the deposit had to be paid in cash. When you are paying such a large sum of money, you expect to be given the information in advance; this set a bad tone for the rest of the tour. We then had the following issues:

1) We were not provided with drinking water. This seems like a completely basic thing to provide, let alone when you're paying $700! We had to stop off at a shop so that we could buy our own water. This lasted throughout the trip (apart from being given juice/tea at lunch/dinner).

2) We were given zero details on the type of accommodation we would be staying in, other than "integration with the local community". What this actually meant was staying with a family high up in the mountains in a room with single glazing, a door that didn't close properly, and two blankets (not even a duvet). The toilet was outside down a flight of stairs, with the toilet and shower being in separate buildings. To say we were cold is an understatement, and that's despite sleeping in our coats and hats. It was minus 4 during the night - even our guide had brought their own sleeping bag. Had we known this in advance we would have packed more appropriately or not chosen the overnight stay.

3) Although staying in the local village is a great experience, you are then told you will be having a "presentation". i.e. the villagers display textile goods that you can buy. We were told that they don't sell these goods anywhere else and that we'd only be able to buy them from there, but lo and behold, when we visited the salt mines there were multiple stalls selling exactly the same goods and for much cheaper. Felt like another attempt to rip us off.

4) We are both capable riders and enjoy riding, however all we did was walk at a relatively slow pace the entire time behind a guide. The scenery is beautiful but also the same throughout the tour, so by the end sadly we were quite bored and wanting a change of pace/scenery. Some of the routes were also shared with the ATV tours which meant a lot of dust/noise.

5) When we went to the Moray ruins, we left the horses to walk around. When we came back, there were other tourists riding our horses and being led around by one of the guides. This was the last straw for us and we complained that it wasn't fair that we should have to wait for other tourists (who are paying NOTHING) to get off our horses whilst we just stand and watch, when we have paid $350 a day to ride.

6) When we complained to the manager at the end of the tour, his response was that our expectations were too high, and that his tour is the cheapest in the area. Yes, it may be cheaper than other ranches, but that doesn't make it cheap. It's still a huge amount of money for very little value in our opinion.

7) The "two days riding" is a complete misrepresentation - we came back to the ranch at 1pm on the second day to then be driven to the salt mines. We had started riding at 9am. When we complained, we were told we could continue to ride to a church around the corner - but we'd already ridden past that church the day before and by this time were bored and frustrated.

We want to be clear that the English speaking guide was excellent and great company, however that is the only positive we are able to provide.

Respectfully; It is a pity that Trip Advisor is taken advantage of in a negative way by the freedom of expression that exists for people with bad intentions. It would have been very different if we had not been conditioned by saying: "If you do not return us 200 Dollars, we are going to make a bad comment on Trip Advisor ...!, So here is the comment. You have no negative concrete reasons about our service to accept the return of 200 Dollars, Sorry. Out of respect, I will not enter into debate with more details about comments / complaints because it does not merit. However, we will take some details very carefully. Greetings.

My friend and I did a lot of research before selecting a riding day. We are both 100 mile endurance riders, so we didn’t want just a 2 hour walking ride- but that’s exactly what we ended up riding.
We also wanted to ensure the horses were well cared for (hooves, diet, etc). While our guide, the owner, was very nice, his horse was emaciated. Ours looked good. We paid to ride 5 hours, at best, we rode 2.5-3 hours, we didn’t push it bc the horses were not in good enough shape for 5 hours, though all we did was walk. Overall, nice owner, but wouldn’t go back.

Best Experience of a Lifetime

Wonderful horses, scenery, and company. I highly recommend this. Due to threat of rain, we did not tent camp. I enjoyed this tour, the scenery, and the mealtime conversations with Albizu. We saw everything - snow-capped peaks, ancient ruins, agriculture, and villages.

Dear Diane ...! Thank you very much for the recommendations, it was a joy for me to be able to accompany you on our 3 day ride. It is always a pleasure to ride with people who share our passion for horses and share breeding experiences. A big hug for Scott and Edna. He hoped you can come back soon. God bless you :)

Great time !

We had a great time riding with Albi during 2 days. My boyfriend is a beginner and I’m experienced in « English style » horseriding and we were both really happy. The horse were nice and well taken care of, the landscape was stunning and Albi has a lot of knowledge to share about Peru. I’d advise to do the 2 days trip as well : I wanted to do the sightseeing (moray maras ect) in priority and I ended up liking even more the day we were out in the fields with no tourist activity in sight :) much longer riding and breathtaking views all over . I will definitely come back if I’m ever back in Peru hopefully for a longer ride !

Best activity in Peru

My two adult children and I absolutely loved this horse riding experience; it's in the top two most memorable and exciting things we've done in Peru! We booked the 'Privete service' to Maras, Moray and Salineras.

We're relative novices at riding, but managed the lovely Paso horses well enough. The scenery was stunning and the salt pans (though you don't ride there) were incredible. Lunch was a tasty picnic. Albi the owner of the stables was really nice as was the driver (sorry forgotten his name) who picked us up from our airbnb in the morning and dropped us off at a different airbnb in a different town at the end of the day (with all our luggage). He also met up with us a couple of times during the day so we could access our things and he brought the picnic, table and chairs. Great day !!

Highlight of our trip!
Mar 2017 • Family
Our family of 4 (with 2 children ages 9 and 12) did a small group with Alvi which was just outstanding! We did a small group ride for the morning/early afternoon.
Communication with Alvi before the trip was very professional and he replied to questions very quickly and effectively.
The instruction was very good. Our children had not been riding before and Alvi's instructions were very good. We had a high confidence that safety was taken seriously.
Horses were great. The ride was a lot of fun.
The trails and scenery were absolutely beautiful.
Lunch was very good- the food as well as the charming set up.
I would lightly recommend using Apupacha Horses while in the Sacred Valley- so beautiful, so fun, and kids as young as 9 years old can ride!

The best way to experience the secret valley!!
Feb 2017 • Family
I had the joy of riding Alvi's beautiful horses and getting a once in a lifetime experience. I have ridden horses all over the globe, but this experience was out of this world! Well taken care of horses, great ride in the mountains, visit to a local inka excavation and a picnic in spectacular views. What an amazing day!! I do not have enough words to describe the feeling of either galloping in the mountains or taking a tranquil ride between potatoes and corn fields. It's up to you... my best recommendation for a day trip in the Secret Valley.

For me as a non experienced horse riding guy of 80kg it was no problem to ride on the easy horses. Some other have 70kg weight limit. Had a great experience.

Great tour!
Nov 2015 • Couples
We had a private tour with Albi and his wonderful horses to see Moray and Salinaras. What a great day! The horses were so easy to ride and the countryside was beautiful. In addition to the tourist sites, we saw local agriculture and even some Andean eagles along the way. Albi was very knowledgeable about Moray and Salinaras, but also shared a wealth of information about the local area that we very much appreciated learning. The hotel pick up was included, as was a very nice picnic lunch. Having car support throughout the day meant we could travel light and comfortably while on the horses. The cost of the trip was very reasonable for such a wonderful, full day outting and it was convenient to be able to book in person in Cusco. I'd love to come back and ride with Apupacha again!
