There are two train options to get to Machu Picchu from Ollantaytambo or Cusco which are Peru Rail and Inca Rail. While most travel agencies book you through Peru Rail, I would say that Inca Rail on average has the more affordable options. We took the train from Ollantaytambo because we were exploring the town, but it costs little to nothing to add the bus service from Cusco to Ollantaytambo. A great thing about Inca Rail is that is offers trains departing almost every hour on this route. All train options offer panoramic windows so it doesn't matter which one you choose. The train was super clean, almost too clean and just smelled heavily of disinfectant. The actual train ride was smooth an beautiful and offered some of the best views during our trip to Peru. The one thig that caught us off guard, in a good way, was the special welcome experience. We were sitting in the waiting room and we here chanting louder and louder until a whole group of employees dressed as Incas dance as they lead you to the train. Even during the train ride, there was a story told about the town of Ollantaytambo. Some people got annoyed of it but we found it interesting. Overall, I definitely recommend booking through Inca Rail directly for your trip to Machu Picchu.

We had the most amazing day visiting Machu Picchu and it was ALL because of Inca Rail. We booked the First Class package (a splurge but FULLY worth it) and every second of the day was filled to the brim with delight. Each bus ride felt like it went by in the blink of an eye because it was so comfortable and interesting riding through the stunning landscape. The train was a JOY and the three course meals for lunch and dinner were delicious. The service was phenomenal. Our server was attentive and got us several Pisco sours upon request and even introduced us to HIS favorite drink as well! Overall, we would refer absolutely everyone to Inca Rail. It will go down in our personal history as a perfect day.

I purchased my ticket with a month in advanced, a few days before the trip I got notification that they changed trains and my experience was not the full one I prepared for. They promised a refund after the trip (still to see), if I wanted to get the train ride I desired I had to move to an hour that I did not need or want. the fact that they changed my plan was very discouraging. The voyager was alright, but for the views I could have just chosen the least expensive option because there was not much leg room. the original purchase was the 360 i think it's called, full service with opened views, snacks and opened cart. They should let you choose your seats.

My mom and I purchased the "complete," VIP package to Machu Picchu just to arrive there and not be able to see the citadel because this package did not include entry tickets. We spent nearly $400 to get on a bus, then a train, then to be specially escorted off the train first, paired with a tour guide (also included in the package), who escorted us to the bus to the citadel, then told we couldn't go up because we didn't have entry tickets. At no point during the purchase process or after did Inca Rails notify us that entry wasn't actually included in this package, which is hands-down the most important part. The entry tickets are limited and there were none available that day or any day that week while we were in Peru. Inca Rail should take far more responsibility to notify their customers of this critical step. Don't get your ticket here. Go directly to the official Machu Picchu website and secure your entry ticket first.

Dear 2022alg,
It is very important for us your opinion, and we are sorry to know that you have this impression about our services.
Please note that at the moment of your purchase at our website the detail of your itinerary (Transfer option) mentioned that this option does not included Machu Picchu entrance and you need the entrance for Circuit 1 to Machu Picchu citadel. Also at the moment of your purchase you received a voucher with the detail of your purchase that does not includes the entrance.
We are sorry to know that you have a bad experience.

The fact is: the railway is basic and old: very simple trains, strong smell of smoke and rattling carriages. Inca Rail should put it clearly on the their website and leave the customers to decide if they want to use it, paying 80 dollars for the 2 hours of train and the rest by bus (took the bus of the identical category for 3 dollars going back the same distance). Instead misleading stories about the exceptional comfort.

Somehow we got to Machu Picchu and I'm thankful that we had our printed tickets and receipts. There was massive confusion at every step of the way and this was in spite of our trying to get details in advance. I had trouble understanding where to check in in Cusco, I thought it was at Plaza de Armas, but it was not. Once at the right location, there was confusion on how to check in. Once the bus picked us up it was OK, no issues there. Once we were dropped off there was mass confusion at the train station. I repeatedly asked for direction on where and when to board the train and could not get an answer! We almost missed the train and we did not understand that the procession of Incan dancers was the signal to board! Once on the train there was confusion about what we paid for! Once we arrived there was someone to meet us to help us connect with the guide who had arranged to meet us the next morning at our hotel. The guide was great and the actual visit to Machu Picchu went well. Back on the train there was MORE CONFUSION about what we paid for and I had to have a stern discussion with the "ticket" guy to convince him that two of our members SHOULD have tickets for the bus back to Cusco. Once we got that straightened out, we were able to ID our bus and the bus did indeed drop us off at our hotel per our purchase. The process was very confusing and frustrating!

For tourists, there are only 2 train options. Both are pretty expensive. The process of embarkation was smooth and timing of service was very punctual. Staff is very nice and they do their job very well. Service is way overpriced for what is offered but the only other option (Peru Rail) is just as expensive. Can you not at least provide some water, a small snack, or maybe even just make the snack menu reasonably priced??? Off my rant….for what it was, we made it there and back but wish it could’ve been more cost effective.

We liked the bus and the train. They even do some kind of performance on board and before the train. It looked like the most tourists were amazed. Especially the children. Everything went smoothly and punctual. The staff was very professional.
The only minus is buying the tickets online. It was kind of unclear what the options were for machu picchu. We ended up getting an not-all-inclusive ticket which was a bit disappointing in the end as we could not visit the other archeological sites (aside from the city itself).

I booked the all inclusive Inca Rail 360 roundtrip to Machu Picchu which left Cusco at the Inca Rail office at 4:20am (Why this time? I did some research and found that there will be less traffic not only on the road but when you arrive at Aguas Calientes / Machu Picchu; so happy we booked this time). I was very happy with the punctuality of the bus transportations (to / from Cusco). The train was very clean, with comfortable seating. The views were amazing going to Machu Picchu and I'm glad we sat on the left side going which had the best views of the water and landscapes. However, if I could take a half a star away, it would be due to no food/drink service onboard the train. I really could have enjoyed a nice cup of tea onboard. Hopefully this is allowed soon. But Peru as of 3/2022 is very strict with masking. Once we arrived into Aguas Calientes, we were introduced to our Tour Guide which was included with the trip as well. He took us to the bus which transports you to Machu Picchu (about 25 mins). He was super nice and took beautiful pictures as we toured through Machu Picchu. He also took us and dined with us at Chullos, which has some great food and views (try the alpaca and fried squid there - the best!!). After, we had time to rest and lounge before heading back to the train. Certainly tired and didn't care which side of the train we were on. I was also pleased that there were smaller buses which took us back from Ollantaytambo, directly to our hotel. We departed at 4:12pm and arrived to our hotel in Cusco around 8:15pm. Overall, very organized/seamless day trip at Machu Picchu from Cusco organized by Inca Rail. Again, I'm happy I picked the early itinerary as well. Highly Recommend!

We traveled from Cusco to Machu Picchu on March 14, 2022 with a family of 5 - 2 adults, 2 children (aged 8 and 14) and grandma. We used the bimodal (bus and train) transportation to Machu Picchu. The check-in process was efficient and conveniently located in Cusco. The roads were a little rough, but the bus was comfortable. When we arrived in Ollantaytambo, we had about 40 minutes before the train departed. There was a comfortable lounge for waiting with Wifi and clean bathrooms. The train ride was great, with awesome views and they let us go to the second car to get pictures from a "balcony" on the train. When you arrive in Aguas Caliente, there weren't any signs, but there is only one street, so you can find the buses up the mountain easily. Anywhere along Cusco/Machu Picchu route, there are always street vendors selling anything you need, from candy and soda to face shields and everything in between. Overall, I liked the Inca Rail service and it was less expensive than Peru Rail.
My only complaint was that face shields were required on the train in both directions. We rode on the bus for 2 hours with only a mask required and then suddenly you have to wear a face shield on a less-crowded train. That just doesn't make any logical sense.

Regarding the face shield, we are happy to share that since March 19th the peruvian gobernment modified the biosecurity protocols at trains, and it is not mandatory any more.
We sincerely hope you have the opportunity to visit us again in the near future!

Hi there. We purchased the voyager bimodal door to door from Cusco to Machu Picchu and 360 binodal door to door from Machu Picchu to cusco. It says departure 4:20am with boarding at 3:50am. What time should we expect the hotel pick up in cusco? Our trip is for July 7th, 2022. Can we pick up tickets the day before or only 30 minutes prior to departure? Thank you.
Bonjour! Es-ce qu’ils sont très strictes par rapport aux bagages? Le poids est correct, mais le mien est un petit peu plus gros que demander…
I have the chance to take the bus/train from Cusco to MP in the afternoon or at night time. Is the view during the daylight worth a little extra hassle and rush from the airport? Or can I relax in Cusco for a couple of hours and take the night time train and not miss much? Thank you!

The view is worthy but don’t be stressed you will miss it out. You can see it on the way back. No rush, direct flight to cuzco is exhausting, keep calm and wear sombrero (seriously).

I used the live chat with Inca Rail online to request extra luggage requirements. Via email exchange I received confirmation and printed a hard copy along with tickets to show at boarding. We did not need extra as we carried a travel backpack, and an overhead carry on. The staff is very accommodating.
