Our family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teenagers) did the 5-day / 4-night tour in Ausangate area with the Andean Lodges. It is a very unique experience. Each day and high pass brought new and amazing views, varied scenery and wildlife - from viscachas hopping around the rocks to a condor soaring above the clouds.

Our guide Mathias deserves a special mention - he was patient, caring and very knowledgeable both in terms of the area and its people and customs (excellent English was appreciated too!). He also gave us some useful tips on Andean hiking style and use of hiking poles so now we are great converts. The rest of the team - the cook, the housekeeper, and lama and horse carers were all from local population and looked wonderfully after us as well, nothing was ever too much trouble.

In terms of practical advice for others that may be considering the trek:

The terrain is suitable for most levels, only moderate fitness is required, poles are helpful but not essential (we found them useful on downhills but also generally in keeping the walking rhythm), good hiking shoes and the usual hiking layers, hat, sunglasses are a must.

The weather in July was nice and sunny, you can sometimes hike in just a base layer, but the wind can be chilly going over the passes. At night it gets cold (down to -5 degC), so if you like to do a bit of star gazing make sure you have a padded jacket, hats, gloves etc. (the stars are nothing short of spectacular!).

The altitude is a concern (you are mostly at 4500-4800m above sea level with a few passes at ca. 5000m), so do take aclimatization seriously, spend a few days in and around Cusco beforehand (there is plenty to do!), and consider bringing with you altitude sickness medication in case you experience headache and loss of appetite.

There will be plenty of food and snacks provided so there is no need to take additional provisions with you.

And away from a few practical observations - this trip is simply amazing, if you love the mountains don't overthink it, just go!

A must do adventure for anyone who loves nature and Peruvian culture. Our lodge was located at 15700 feet above sea level. I don’t know if I was breathless from the altitude or the beauty and kindness of the people who live here. My friends and I did the 2 day, 1 night adventure as an add on to our 5 day, 4 night classic Inca trail itinerary. We were so glad we did. By completing the Inca trail first we were better acclimated. Angela was our guide. She was outstanding, providing a detailed and rich history of Peru and the amazing indigenous people who continue to thrive in this beautiful yet harsh environment.

For some years we dreamed of visiting Peru and trekking with Andean Lodges, we chose The Apu 5D/4N road was certainly the best decision, the experience and landscapes are beautiful, you can feel so at peace with so much beauty, every day of our trekking we were exhausted but marveled with what we lived.

Everyone was so friendly and made our whole trip exceptional... from booking, briefing, our guides, the people who accompanied us with our luggage, excellent and delicious food. The hostels very comfortable and with excellent facilities. Thank you for such a pleasant experience you have a beautiful country and we would definitely like to come back. Andean Lodges is recommended 200%

I just completed a 6-day solo trek on the backside of Ausangate in Peru with Andean Lodges. Their level of service is excellent, and they made my experience wonderful.

On my trek, I had Manu (guide), Esteban (cook), Alejandro (llamas), Santos (horses), Cruz (emergency horse) and Rebecca (housekeeper). Each and every one of them were wonderful. You can tell when people are simply going through the motions, but not this crew. They took care of my every need.

Andean Lodges specializes in this specific hike on the backside of Ausangate and their knowledge of the area is amazing.

If you are looking for a trek that is not crowded with tourists, but really enjoy beautiful views and solitude, this is the company and trek for you.

Highly recommend.

These mountains are definitely unreal. Its a 3,5 hour ride form Cuzco and the a 3 hour hike, but the reward is amazing. Its looks like a different planet. Very few tourist go here so is still unspoiled. Ask around in Cusco for a good price, we paid 130 soled each, but we were with a big group. Definitely worth waking up at 2;30 at night

Vinicunca is an amazing hidden nature wonder in the Andes. Andean Lodges is working on protecting it, creating awareness in locals and visitors for its conservation, and encouraging the development of a responsible tourism in the area. Although it is possible to get there in one day, we don't offer that program. Hiking from 3800 m. up to 5100 m. in 3 hours, and go back by the same way is not something we recommend.

Thanks to the whole Team of Andean Lodges. Travelling as a private Group with 12 People the "Apu trail", we are very happy to have been able to share this experience: fantastic landscape, very comfortable lodging in the highes lodges of the world (!) and a very friendly Team hiking with us: the kitchen Team and Service Team were alwya smiling and laughing and bringing so much optimism in our Group, even when we felt tired after a Long day of hiking: it really demands a lot of energy, but is also unforgettable. They are prepared also for "tired feet", so in case you cannot walk anymore, they provide help with 2 horses who were with us the whole trip. This gives a good Impulse that in case of health Problems, you are not alone.
It is amazing how professional this Team is working for their Clients during the hike and also in the morning or for Dinner in the Lodge. Food is excellent and also, the beds are really comfortable.
THERE IS NOTHING TO REGRET, ONLY TO BE HAPPY AFTER THAT HIKE.
I will definitevely come back.

If you're like me, and don't like camping but want to experience a multi-day trek then this is the trip for you.
I did the 5 days 4 night trekking tour and I had an amazing time. One of the things I appreciated most about this trip was not seeing any other tour group for the entire 5 days, except when we got to the colored mountains...but it was only for a brief period.
The scenery was breath taking. It was a perfect opportunity for me to be completely present in the moment whilst taking in the surroundings.
I am not an experienced hiker. I mean, I've hiked but not for 7-8 hrs a day at high elevation. If you're like me, don't worry, our guide insisted on us going at a very slow pace. There was an emergency horse which accompanied us in case anyone got too tired to continue. I did prepare for this trip months ahead by working on increasing my stamina. Also, get good hiking shoes.
The lodges were comfortable and the food was decent. We had hot showers and very comfortable beds to sleep in. I had very poor appetite during the trek so there was enough food for me personally. It might be a good idea to bring some snacks with you if you are used to big portions. Beer and wine are available for purchase at the lodges.
Don't forget to do some star gazing after dinner.

As for altitude sickness, I did not suffer from it because I followed their advice and spent a few days in Cusco before leaving on this trek. I arrived in Cusco on a Monday and departed on the trek on Friday. I also begun taking Diamox before arriving in Cusco.

Franco, was my point of contact when booking the trip. He was very patient with my concerns and answered all my questions in a timely manner. Alfredo, was an awesome guide and he took care of me and helped me with every little issue I had during the entire trek.
Franco, Alfredo & Sebastian! I love you guys. I am thinking of doing this trip again so look out!

I just returned from Peru where the highlight of my trip was a 5-day, 4 night trek from May 4-8, 2015 in the Apu Ausangate highlands conducted by Andean Lodges. Our group consisted of 6 women (myself included) from the U.S., England, Zimbabwe, Spain, and Peru. Two guides, Jesus and Roger, accompanied us, and their knowledge of the local communities, people, and regional myths were both entertaining and educational. Our cooks, Nico and Justin, prepared wonderful meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily) that not only tasted great but were artfully presented. We were fortunate to have two local high-school girls accompany us on our journey, and we were amazed by their fortitude and stamina. The lodges themselves are beautiful - set in impossibly gorgeous scenery, remote and peaceful. We were welcomed at each lodge by the host (or guardian) and made to feel at home with a crackling wood stove fire, hot tea and snacks, and even cozy slippers as a gift! The rooms are well appointed with very comfortable beds piled high with blankets and fluffy down comforters. The hot water bottles awaiting us each night when we climbed into bed were a special treat. Although several of us experienced altitude adjustment illness at various times, we overcame it with courage and determination to continue on the journey. I highly recommend anyone taking this trek to consult with their doctor ahead of time and take Diamox ahead of time and during the trek to alleviate altitude symptoms - my mistake was not taking this prescription. The two women who took it ahead of our trek and during the trek didn't experience any problems, while the rest of us did. However, I enjoyed riding a horse during part of the trek when I wasn't feeling well, and my horse guide, Alejandro, made me feel safe and secure even though I'm not an experienced horse rider. I was able to enjoy the scenery even more while riding, as I could look around instead of at my feet on the trail! The scenery in the area is spectacular and has to be experienced to understand its magnitude. Every day brought new thrills and adventure along each section of the trails. Being the only people as far as one can see in such a vast open area is humbling to say the least. We were fortunate to view the flight of an Andean condor overhead as we reached Ausangate - a lucky sign to be sure. And we also saw a group of vicunas - another treat! The thousands of llamas and alpacas grazing in the pasturelands were an astounding sight, and we enjoyed their curious stares as we passed through their homeland. The local people welcomed us warmly, and we enjoyed learning about their lifestyles and traditions. They are amazingly hardy and we came away feeling respectful and humbled by their ability to thrive in such a high altitude environment. Andean Lodges' commitment to helping the local communities is inspiring, and I feel privileged to have been able to make this trek with such wonderful people. New friendships, lifetime memories, and a feeling of accomplishment traveled home with me. Thank you to everyone at Andean Lodges for making this a possibility for me and for many others to enjoy!

Ausangate Trek (5d / 4n): Trekking Ausangate, a spiritual Andean mountain and Peru's fourth highest peak, wants to be earned and provides ample opportunity to learn about your body, your mind and the strength of the connection between the two. Conquering 5 mountain passes of 5000 meters and more provided breathtaking (literally) views and moments of snow and glacier capped peaks and rainbow colored mountains.

The 4 comfortable lodges, one of them built and managed by two local communities, eased the bodily stresses every night but were not a complete insulation from altitude and freezing cold. At an altitude between 4300 and 4600 m, these lodges are praised as the highest "luxury" lodges in the world. They are indeed luxury considering where they are located at. Tiled bathrooms, hot showers, delicious meals try to pamper you in the evenings at candlelight only. If only the wood stoves would have produced more heat. A warm water bottle helped us to get to sleep more easily. Local cultural highlights made the stay educational and provided a warm connection to the locals.

When hiking between the lodges over soaring passes, amazing temperature swings during the day could often occur within minutes. What made this exploration of human determination special was our guide Holger who did not only explain landscapes and traditions but made every single trekking member feel special. One of my hardest accomplishments was learning that the body appears to have few limits when one puts mind over matter as shown by a 72 year old fellow trekker and a throat cancer survivor and former guide. What an inspiration not to forget.

I have done the Andean Lodges trek from lodge to lodge 3 times and am about to make it 4 times in September.

The hiking, lodge caretakers and guides are amazing. The scenery incredibly beautiful! You get a real Peruvian experience with your Peruvian guides and local peoples of the Andes. Kind, humble people. If you like adventure travel, you’ll love this trek! Peru is magical. Do it. You will not be disappointed.
