We've been traveling to Cusco with my wife and after visiting Cusco, we went on a trip to Machu Picchu with ITEP. After having completed the tour, I have to say, that everything, from start to finish, was perfectly planned and executed. It started with a debriefing in the agency. We got all the tickets and all the info we would need. Alex, who took us through it, was also available online the whole next day, and we felt that he'd be available should anything go wrong (but it didn't)
We were taken from the hotel as scheduled, the driven to Ollantaytambo where, after just 15 minutes we boarded the train to Aguas Calientes. When we got there, there was a guy waiting for us with my name just to show us where we'd be having lunch afterwards and where to stand in line, and introduced us to our guide, Victor.
Soon afterwards, we got on the bus and exactly as planned, we entered Machu Picchu site.
The only backdraw of the whole trip was the weather, but ITEP is not responsible for that. On the photos you can see the changing weather conditions. Something to consider when choosing time of your travel. Still, some good photos were taken.
Everything else the agency was responsible for, went perfect
Oh, one more thing - the lunch we had was in an organic restaurant and it was absolutely delicious.
I totally recommend ITEP. Thanks for a great time

My group and I, did the 5 day trek to Choqequerao as well as the 2 day trip to Machu Picchu. They were both amazing. My favorite was Choqequerao it was very physical and the views were amazing. I cannot say enough good things about Santiago and our group. I've done intense hikes in the past, carrying my own gear..been there done that..save yourself and your body and let the donkeys take it up for you. The trek was super affordable..we got hot amazing authentic Peruvian food every day, 3x a day, and tents and sleeping arrangements were ready each night when we got back from a full day. Santiago was a great tour guide and brought the tour to life for us. We felt very safe, and well cared for during all our tours.
I highly recommend Choqequerao if you are looking for a changing off-the- beaten- tail kind of tour. There were hardly any tourists up there because of Covid, which gave us an unbelievably customized tour and got great pictures without all the tourists fighting for the views.
The Machu Picchu hike was also good. Definitely more tourists and "Covid rules" to abide by. Next time I will do the 4 day to Macho Picchu because it was closed due to covid. There is nothing better than staying in these local towns and getting an authentic meal enjoying conversation with the locals, and sleeping under the stars. Do not cheat yourself of this experience and do a train ride, or bus. If you are physically able I recommend the longer tours. You will get much more out of it.
We also did rainbow mountain and Lake Humantay. Also great day hikes with amazing views. Much heavier with tourists and not as physical as the longer hikes but still was challenging, just much shorter. If you can manage to go right now, while Covid is keeping people away, (even though the testing and preparation is a big headache) you will reap the benefits of having these world wonders all to yourself, or having only a fraction of the amount of people that normally are there.
And also, ask for Santiago, he's the best!

I did the 2-day Royal Inka Trail + Wayna Pichhu hike. The 2 day trail included one full day of hiking and then a tour of the ruins/citadel on the second day.
Henry is an amazing guide with great experience, and a unique ability to create a strong bond among the group! He made the hike interesting throughout with well-timed breaks and narration. And at the end of the hike he sent a really fun video of all the pictures he snapped! I highly recommend this hike with Henry as the tour guide.

We did the Classic Inca Trail hike (4 days 3 nights) with ITEP and had an amazing time. Our guide Santiago was wonderful. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the history and the geography of the region, fielding all our many, many questions and even spoke 3 languages (English, Spanish, German) to accommodate our diverse group of travelers.
The gear, including tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, trekking poles, were top rate when the weather got rainy and cold. And the level of detail from ITEP made the trip so memorable. We would wake to hot cups of coca tea first thing in the morning, arrive to incredible spreads for lunch and already set-up tents in the evening. The food was amazing and plentiful. Kudos to the chef and the hard-working porters who lugged the heaviest of loads and supported us throughout so well.
And of course the trail itself, with its stunning views, foliage, ancient ruins and Machu Picchu finish just can’t be beat. Couldn’t recommend more!

I enjoyed the tour of the Short Inca Trail with an add on to summit the Machu Picchu sacred mountain. I felt fortunate to have Henry as my tour guide. He explained the history of the trail, was upbeat, and even took and shared many photos with our group of 6 people. Once I arrived in Cusco, the company made things easy. They had a driver meet me at the airport and train station holding a sign with my name on it. There was even a briefing the night before the trip to meet our tour guide and know what to expect. The only reason I gave this 4 stars and not 5 is because it took the ITEP office longer than I would have liked to respond to my emails. They are probably busy since they do an excellent job, but when you go to another country by yourself, it’s good to have faster communication in preparation for your trip.

We booked the one day Inka trail and had Percy as our guide. Firstly, the company are incredible, we booked this originally pre- covid to travel in 2020, but needed to move the booking several times given the situation. The company were so helpful, very responsive and always made me feel comfortable that we will make it in the end. 2.5 years later we were so lucky to meet Percy, a wonderful, extremely knowledgable and talented guide. We had so many questions about the Inkas, which he was able to help us with and he made the journey to the Sun Gate and finally Machu Picchu so enjoyable. We thank him for everything! This was one of the highlights of our trip and cannot recommend the experience enough.

Our guide Percy was an outstanding tour guide and has made our experience unforgettable. Percy has helped our group succeed and has treated us fairly and with compassion. I really enjoyed having Percy as our guide because he has helped my group through difficulties and challenges in this extreme hike towards Machu Picchu. He also managed to provide water in a case of emergencies when water was not available either. He is a great photographer and I really like the views of my pictures when I have him asked to. Overall I highly recommend Percy as a tour guide if you are person who shares nature love, are open minded to different cultures and enjoy being outdoor, and are ready to one of most exciting experience in your life! Thank you Percy!

Percy & Iza made our trip an incredible experience! We hiked to Humantay, camped and hiked in Machu Pichu, and did the Cusco city tour. Percy & Iza were professional, organized, knowledgeable and a joy to be around.
We were a group of 16….adults and teens from the U.S. with many differing requests and ability levels and they made the trip wonderful for everyone.
I would highly recommend them to anyone looking to tour Cusco, the Sacred Valley or hike the Inca trail!

The trip was amazing! The staff members did a fantastic job; everything went smoothly and we enjoyed every moment of the journey. Everyday of the Inka Trail was a wonderful experience, gifted with the opportunity to get to know my companions a bit more as well as meeting other people, from other agencies, who were also walking on the same path: the Qhapaq Ñan.
Furthermore, the porters and the chef did an excellent job. We couldn't have made it without their help. They did such a terrific effort to make sure we, the clients, were always confortable, specially after those four to five hours of longwalks. The food was delicious and it was served with such a deep concern and love. Every dish had a decoration on the plate, the napkins, the table, everything looked beautiful whenever we sat at the table to eat. I will never forget those moments, honestly, they were priceless.
I sincerely recommend this agency: Inka Trail Expeditions Peru. It offers a fabulous service, one of a kind, and it delivers all the expectations that a tourist, national (from Peru) or international (from abroad) would expect. I hope that future clients enjoy this unforgettable adventure like I did. It's really quite something!
Few things to keep in mind:
- The tents are usually shared by two people, which is understandable because these are very good three station tents that serve even for very high altitude mountains; so if you want an independent tent or sleep alone, you may want to talk to the agency about it so there is no shortage of tents during the expedition (remember the extra weight is carried by the porters).
- Hot water showers are only available in the first day. Since the second day, you only get cold water, and the bathrooms in the Inka Trail after the first day are not very clean, the floors are a mess..., but I think is understandable since the infrastructure in the mountains is not best and in november it was always raining. In any case, it was stil an "ok" shower, not as clean as your average hotel, but at least is good to have a somewhat functional cold shower after a long day of sweating and walking.
- The best time to see the sunrise through the Inti Punku is before september. When I did the Inka Trail in november it was all foggy, we couldn't see anything. It wasn't as wonderful as we thought it would be; fortunately, later on, Machu Picchu cleared up and we got the classical picture, but at the Inti Punku, with so many people and the foggy weather, it's unlikely you will get any good photographs.

For us, this option proved superior compared to the 4-day trek on the Inca Trail. Hiking presents its challenges, but our guide, Gunter, demonstrated exceptional knowledge to lead us on the steep slopes. His familiarity with the trail was key to arriving in the afternoon, avoiding tourist crowds. The next day, we enjoyed a detailed tour of Machu Picchu, with valuable information about Inca culture. I highly recommend the experience of trekking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

We are doing the trek in June just wondering about water when on the trek do we need to take water purification tablets with us??
Also any other tips on things to take that you might not think of?
Thanks k x

There was water available for purchase at pretty much all the rest stops at fairly reasonable prices. Also the cook heated water for everyone in the morning. We brought water tablets, but never needed to use them.
I would recommend hiring a porter to carry your sleeping bag and extra clothes, so you only need a heavy duty day pack to hike with. The pace is fairly fast, with long rest periods in between

I brought purification tablets, though that they can be bought in Cusco. You will be able to buy water on the Inca Trail. Bring them if you have them . The pills do not take up much room . I don't think we used ours. I think the water that we were served was boiled and fine or perhaps bottled .
You will get a list of what to bring. Follow the list. I would look into taking altitude sickness meds. Speak to your physician. I am not sure if they are the reason we stayed healthy but some people did get altitude sickness and we did not.

Hi ,
I was very interested in your review because we are planning to go also during the month of August. Can you specify what the coldest temperature is at nights and hottest temperatures during the day? Also, is the weather humid?
Thanks,
Brenda
Written January 19, 2016
Hi,
Second night was just below zero (Celsius) and highest day temperature was around 20 to 25 degrees. I started with a lot of layers but ended up with shorts and t shirt. I had a 25 litre back pack which was fine as a daypack. Wasn't humid for us.

Hallo Thrishgore,
