About First Step Expeditions
First Step Expeditions is a small company with a big mission — to bring adventure seekers on authentic, guided tours through Peru and to provide an off-the-beaten-track experience that gives directly back to the local economy. This is not your standard big-bus tour group. Blaire, Javier, and Roger are a team of experienced travelers who have spent decades working in the tourism industry. They know what they’re doing, and they communicate with you every step of the way to ensure a fantastic trip. But more importantly, they truly love everything Peru has to offer and want visitors to leave with a sense of history, belonging, and wonder. They lead their company with curiosity, empathy, and through the lens that experiencing new perspectives through travel makes us all better citizens of the world.

Overview
In addition to its incredible scenery, this small-group, guided trek gives you the opportunity to have the quiet seclusion of a tough Andes trail, but brings you to villages for camping and interaction with the local people. You will experience all seasons by hiking over snow-capped peaks into the rain forest with waterfalls and hot springs. Unlike the Inca Trail, you will have the opportunity to witness the traditions and customs of the Quechua culture.

My partner and I were lucky enough to do the Rainbow Mountain hike and the 4 day Inca Trail with First Step Expeditions this month (November 2019). Both experiences were incredible and that was mainly due to how amazing First Step Expeditions were. Both my partner and I suffered with altitude on the Rainbow Mountain hike but our guide George supported us and made sure we got through it and helped us with his “‘magic potion” which is a liquid you breathe in to help with altitude. The 4 day Inca Trail was incredible. Every day our guide Roger made it crystal clear what our itinerary was daily. He educated us to a high standard on the history of the Inca ruins. We learned a lot from him. The porters were amazing. Every morning they made sure were had a Coca tea, made sure our campsite and bags were ready at the end of each day and were always in joyful spirits. The chef Carmello cooked us the most amazing meals every day, all authentic Peruvian food and it was all so delicious. First step expeditions went above and beyond our expectations, something we will never forget for the rest of our lives. Thank you so much!!

First Step Expeditions arranged everything for us from airport pick up to tours to airport drop off. They did an incredible job! The trip was seamless due to their arrangements. We toured Lima and then went to Inca sites and the salt mines in Cusco. We ended the trip with a day trip to hike Rainbow Mountain. Everything was incredible.

First Step Expeditions delivered an unforgettable week in Peru. Previously, we had enjoyed a trek with super guide Roger A. We reached out to Roger with the plan to hike Rainbow Mountain (Winikunka) on my 50th birthday. Roger immediately responded and suggested we schedule with Blair and organize the trip. Blaire did a phenomenal job of recommending day trips in Lima and Cusco, setting up drivers for us and basically steering the ship flawlessly. We selected a day walking tour in Lima which included the catacombs, a boat trip from Lima to Sea Lion Island (Palomino), a day trip visiting Inka villages (the greeting in Misminay was beyond exceptional), the Mares Salt Mines, a visit to Chincheros and the Inka ruins/churches, the Coffee Museum in Cusco personal tasting tour, and finally a day trip to Rainbow Mountain. Roger, Blaire, Lio, Edwin, and Carlos all made our trip extremely memorable. It was beyond expectation, we had the best time as we learned so much from our week long adventure. We will only consider First Step in the future and recommend without hesitation this team for YOUR trip to Peru. Pros: Drivers on time, guides knowledgeable, execution flawless and most importantly - they made us feel welcome and appreciated. There are a lot of tour companies, but First Step should be your first and only choice when visiting Peru. We'll be back.

We just returned from our bucket list trip to Machu Picchu. We planned our trip through First Step Expedition. We were taken care of in every way. From picking us up at the airport in Cusco to hotels which served breakfast, to city trips, lunches, the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu. We were even surprised with a lunch with an Andean family at their home. Enjoyed a trip to a haciendo that showed us how alpaca is processed and also bought the most beautiful baby alpaca scarves and poncho. Our guide Jorge was so accommodating and knowledgeable. He even carried my backpack on the Inca Trail. Jorge went out of his way to make sure we had the most memorable experience. He was such a gentleman and very easy going. We would totally recommend him as your guide. Blair at First Step Expedition worked so hard to make sure our needs were met; wifi hotels, breakfast and A/C (even though it wasn’t necessary). Please if you are planning a trip to Machu Picchu, we highly recommend First Step Expedition. Everything is taken care of for you. The only thing you have to do is relax and enjoy your vacation.
