We booked with Contacto Aventura in Cuzco. Overall a very poorly organised crappy trip with way too many people (a few thousand were on the 6 KM trail, imagine what an ant-path) and far too long a drive, with too much pissing around, wasting time, guides being an hour late for the pick up (then blatantly lying that they had been before but there was nobody there, we had been waiting for 1 hour and 15 minutes and nobody came before...). They were another hour late again when we were supposed to be back at the vans for lunch at 12:30 (they turned up over an HOUR late)! This after we rushed back from the top of the mountain to make it in time, if we would have known we could have walked to the red valley or spent more time enjoying the scenery. Going on horse back does not mean going for a relaxing horse ride: you are dumped on a horse and they take the lead and pull the horse up the hill and back - like you are a small child. It is not an enjoyable horse ride and doesn't matter whether you are experienced or not. This is the way you go. Also they did not advise before hand that the horse only takes you to the base of the hill, and you have to put in the hardest yards yourself. This is fine if it is too strenuous for the horse, but this should have been advised at the time of booking. They also lied about the price, they said it would be 60 soles if you want to go on horse back. But that is only one way, and only partially as described before. They should have been honest about that too at time of booking. They filled up with gas early in the morning (couldn't they have done that at night after the previous tour?) so another 20 minutes waiting around. 3 Hour drive to the breakfast place, 5-day old dry bread with jam and a cold wafer-thin omelette with an instant coffee is what you got. Food was terrible, plus I asked twice at the time of booking to make sure to order a veggie meal for me and they assured this would be taken care of. The lunch was soup with chicken stock for a starter and fried chicken as a main...So I just ate tomato with cucumber. If they would have just said a veggie meal was not possible I could have just brought my own lunch. It took too long, so much waiting around for other people, I seriously urge you to organise a private tour to the mountain if you want to go, get a taxi with a few friends, arrange a day price and get them to wait for a few hours and then take you back. May be a bit more expensive but at least it will be far more enjoyable. The tours are just terribly Mickey Mouse, unnecessarily early departure and unnecessarily late return. Could be done in half the time and the guides are pretty useless, may as well just go yourself. The mountain itself is beautiful and the hike to it is as well, very scenic and the closer you get to the mountain, the more stuning the views become.
