We did the 2day/1night hike to MP , starting at Km 104 with head expeditions..our guide Alex was just excellent, he was always on time, he is very passionate about flora and fauna and took the time to point things out throughout the hike, he was very patient and kind with our 8 year old, the lunch/ snacks provided were excellent .. the accommodation and dinner in AC was very good too.. everything was very well organized.. Definitely recommended!

I did my research and read tons of reviews and I know that travelers have an almost endless number of tour providers to choose from. Here is what make Head Expeditions so good: 1. Head = Hector Deza. This is Hector's company and you get Hector's tours and he is good at what he does. His studies give him a deep knowledge base for Andean culture in Peru, both past and present. He clearly wants his clients to have a great experience. 2. Hector's team. From his driver to his cooks, Hector's team is outstanding. The prepared trail side meals are excellent and his driver, Reuben, is friendly and adept. Recommendations: 1.2-day Inca trail: Do more with your valuable travel days and arrive at the Sun Gate when you can actually see Machu Picchu. 2. The Sacred Valley - To experience Peruvian life in the Andes, spend some time staying in the sacred valley and let Hector take you on a tour. Less time on the Inca trail = more of your valuable vacation time getting a broader experience. We stayed at a rental in Urubamba and loved it. 3. Waqrapukara - Our tours with Hector included a 'day trip' to Waqrapukara. Stunning hike, but be prepared for a long day both in the van and on the trail (13,000 ft average). Hector's team took care of every detail and the lunch we had at the ruin was outstanding. We saw one other hiker on the trail that day. One. I have no experience with other tour companies and I'm sure that there are others that do a fine job, but I recommend this one as a sure bet.

Hector runs a superb operation. We elected to walk the "short" Inca trail, which is not really two days on the trail, just one day, from Km 104 to the Sun Gate and down into Machu Picchu. The second day is a guided tour of Machu Picchu. Hector assigned Pepe to be our guide. The short Inca trail is somewhat technical, sometimes slippery (during Peru summer) and occasionally grueling, with a couple of steep climbs. Hikers call this a "moderate" hike, which takes a good 5 hours, with stops. Initially concerned that it was not Hector himself leading our small group (three on the trail), we immediately realized Pepe was immensely knowledgeable, capable, kind and relaxed. Pepe's knowledge of the history of the Inca, Bingham's important role in re-discovering MP, and expertise in the geology and flora of the area impressed us greatly. We called him "Professor Pepe" for his deep, academic and thoughtful understanding and ability to convey important information about MP and the Inca. We hiked at our own pace, with no pressure from Pepe. Pepe not only studied seriously the Inca history at the University, but also keeps up with the latest theories and findings, instilling a better appreciation of this phenomenal culture. We highly recommend both Pepe and Hector. The "short" Inca trail is really "all-inclusive": Hector picks you up either in the Sacred Valley (recommended, as it is at lower altitude) or Cusco and drives to the train station with tickets in hand. His price includes everything: train fare, private guided hike on the Inca trail, entrance fees (make sure to bring your passport!), bus ride from MP to AC, hotel in AC, bus ride back to MP on the second day, entrance fees on the second day, guided tour, bus back down to AC second day, train back to Sacred Valley and transport to Cusco. We might only suggest that the dinner restaurant after the hike be changed, as the food was only mediocre (but they obviously offer the Guide a free meal with gringos in tow). Back in Cusco, Hector himself guided us through Sacsayhuaman, just north of Cusco, with great detail, special places to see (including an awesome cave) and lectures as deep and interesting as Professor Pepe. We highly recommend both Hector and Professor Pepe.

We (four American tourists) had an excellent time with Hector. He was informative, accommodating, and overall extremely enjoyable to be around. The hike was just above our comfort level, and Hector made sure we pushed ourselves while maintaining safety and taking all necessary precautions. I would recommend Head 100 times over, our tour was the highlight of the trip!

We came to Peru in hopes of seeing Rainbow mountain or areas similar. We were walking by hectors office (Head Expeditions) and he kindly welcomed us in. We didn’t really know what to do as far as tours go because we also wanted to do Machu Picchu. Hector got us all set up for our Machu trip and two days later, we took a trip with him to Palcoyyo Mountain, which was the mountain similar to Rainbow, and in my opinion it was better than the pictures I’ve seen of Rainbow mountain. It was so gorgeous and Hector had us all set up with everything we needed for high altitude sickness. Hector also took many photos and he was a fantastic guide!
