Rainbow Mountain and Ausengate in 3 Days
Jul 2021
When we saw pictures of Rainbow Mountain and Ausengate we knew we needed to add both to our itinerary. However, because we were traveling with kids we wanted a more relaxed tour that didn't require a 4am wakeup call and 7 hours in a car. We found an amazing tour company called Cusco Adventures Transtours who were able to arrange the perfect tour for our needs. We left Cusco day one at 7:30 am, and then traveled to rainbow mountain where we hiked to the top. (Horses are available if needed which we got for 2 of our smallest kids). Take warm clothes and layer up as it is super cold and windy both in the parking lot and at the top, but warm as you hike. The glacier mountain views as you hike are beautiful. Make sure to hike to the very top if you want the best views. Its worth the extra effort. And take headache medication as altitude sickness is real and hit one person in our party super hard with a sudden migraine. We were also grateful for our walking sticks on steep parts, but most of the trail is flat and easy. We then left Rainbow mountain and drove a few more hours to Ausengate where we stayed for 3 nights to explore, but rainbow mountain is definitely a must see while in Peru. So unique and different! A once in a lifetime experience. Also go on a clear sunny day as the colors are far more vibrant!

Absolutely Breathtaking Views
Jun 2021
Rainbow Mountain is hard to get to but definitely so so so worth it. There are two ways to get to the top: ride a horse (100 soles) and hike up the rest OR walk the entire way. You can chose the method that works best for you depending on your physical condition. While I didn't feel any altitude sickness, the last hike up is definitely very steep and took my group about 45 minutes at least. We had to stop every few steps to catch our breath. Once you reach the highest point, you will be shocked by the beautiful scenery. It's a view that I will never forget and I would go back in a heartbeat. The pictures really don't do the attraction justice. Don't forget to dress very warmly with hat, scarf and gloves as the top of the mountain is very cold and windy due to the high elevation.

Beautiful place ... beautiful scenery. The hike is a bit demanding but totally worth it. I am from London and I liked knowing this part of Peru.

Two ways to go up, short path and the long one both are from different sides of the mountain. Same view in the top less effort. Clouds might get in the way but be patient.

breath taking.

This trip is breath taking is 2 meanings. You need a good condition to walk up to 5000 meters. This is breathtaking and exhausting. But if you are on top, it is breathtaking again.

This place is great! The scenery, the whole experience is quite the adventure. I would recommend this during the summer or non-rainy season.

Go once all the tours are gone: after 11am-12pm
Sep 2019
I had my own car when I went there and I think it helped a lot.
Basically most tours leave Cusco at or before 5am and arrive at the mountain around 9am I think. By 11.30am they're either done or soon to be on their way home.
I arrive at the mountain at 10am, it was packed with hundred of people but by 11.30 it was much more empty and at 1pm it was me and three people taking photos.
The colours are of course not as bright as all the filtered photos but they're still nice.
I highly recommend that you take the time (about 1h) to walk to towards the red valley (when you face the rainbow mountain you'll see a path leading to the right, along the mountain). you don't need to do the whole valley to see a nice landscape, just walk all the way to the ridge and then you'll see that on your left you're able to go a little higher. Get there and you'll be rewarded with some very nice views of the valley. It's truly worth it.
I did it when it was sunny though, can't tell what it look slike when it's cloudy.
Also, it's 5000m high so high UV protection index is required at this altitude. I used 20+ very frequently but got burned on my scalp, which even at the beach has never happened to me before.
Also prepare some medication for headache if you stay too long (like more than 1-2h)

Worth the Hike
Sep 2019
While it was cold and snowing when we went, and a lot of work to hike up to the colored mountains, it was so worth it. We live at sea level so the altitude provided some difficulty. We walked slowly and were fine getting to the top. There are lots of stopping points with bathrooms, snacks, souvenirs, or a horse you can rent to take you the rest of the way to the top. Just be sure to have soles as the bathrooms cost money. Would recommend seeing!
