We got off the plane into the harsh heat and humidity of the amazonian rainforest and took a boat down the amazonian basin river where we were fed localized ingrediants for their version of Chinese food and let me tell you. Eating food out of a amazon leaf bigger than my own head was incredible it taste so pure and so full of nutrients I couldnt help but ask for seconds and thirds. We reached our hidewaway resort in the jungle and were surrounded by nature and life from howler monkeys yelling in the distance to the birds that make a water drop like noise that haunts and echoes through the entire forest. An elderly lady sprained her ankle so my younger brother and I took her back to the resort cabins and took the oppurtunity to run. We ran off into the forest on our own adventure much like the forests we have at home we found old abandoned mining carts and railroads leading to mines we found climbeable trees that led hundreds of feet into the air that overlooked the jungle where we sat and watched the sun set over the amazonian basin. When we returned to the resort they had just begun a search and rescue effort to find us so we were lucky they didnt have to put that much effort into us but told us everything that lives out there can and will kill us but who cares, we only experience what we dare ourselves to achieve. By far my favourite part of the trip. Food was prepped by students from around the world learning how to cook the best of meals so everything was incredible. No electricity for heated showers so when you take a shower as a man expect your balls to hide inside your body as you struggle to breathe through the shock of how cold it is but it is refreshing. Our beds in the cabins had mesh around it to protect us from bugs and spiders and snakes which was really nice. On a night tour I spotted a wandering spider as the tour guide missed it I had my attention focused. Scary place but my god Id continue to go back there if I could every year.

It was the first time I went to the Amazon rainforest and really surprised by the height of the trees. Another surprise is the foot of the tree because it is gigantic compared to its trunk and it is not circular. Another surprise is the size of the vines, I thought their diameters were smaller. In the forest I thought our Guide was advancing by cutting the bushes and making his way through. But that was not my case. In fact I would say that it’s like in France, I drove on hiking trails. A little disappointed but it is also true that at the security level you can not venture into the forest and moreover without Guide. As these were paths drawn, I cannot say that I saw many animals. The Guide tells me that when I walk unintentionally on a spider, I simply crush it and there is no danger on this trail. In fact, I did not see any snakes, perhaps because of the noise of our group. I actually saw monkeys and understood that the height of the trees is impressive. In short, I do not regret my adventure in the forest and it was for me a nice discovery

I had an unfogettable experience in the most amazing and alive place on our planet, the Amazon jungle rainforest.
My friend and I decided that we had to take a trip, and where better than to the very lungs of the Earth?
We found our guide-to-be, Gerson, on this very website! He introduced himself to us as someone who had been in the touring business since his youth, and was now offering tours independently with his own company. He was tired of all the exploitation of the local people by big companies who were from elsewhere, so he started the company Curuhuinsi, which actually benefits the locals.
So we toured a bit of Peru, and then flew to the city of Iquitos. He met us at the airport in Iquitos, and greeted us very warmly. I had never met someone as friendly. He brought us to a great hotel, and we talked about what we wanted to do with our trip, since any trip with him is custom-made.
We left the following morning, and on our very first day we saw iguanas, giant kingfishers, exotic neon butterflies, beautiful birds of all kinds, and on our first day we swam with river dolphins! We stayed at the base-camp for the first night, which was a beautiful place just on the river, with palm-leaf roofs. I can't describe the feeling of watching the many-colored sunset over the river with dolphins swimming by and the most oxygen-concentrated air on the planet fueling your lungs.
We had night expeditions, such as caiman-crocodile spotting for example, and let me tell you, i have never seen a more gorgeous night sky than on the river in the rainforest. The stars were brighter than anywhere else I had ever seen them, and more plentiful than I would've imagined. On our first night in the jungle we caught a giant bullfrog, but i didn't care to lay a finger on it... Gerson taught us so many things about all the plants and trees, such as their history, nutritional uses, and many medicinal properties. We had wonderful walks through the forest where we would see the wildlife and learn all about nature; we'd see monkeys and different birds of prey, and learn about the ways of the ants and their relationship with the trees. We got to drink from the cat's claw vine,
which is reputed to have the purest water in the world (not to mention cancer-curing), and drank from other fruits.
One time we were on a lake and found a sloth in a nearby tree, and Gerson picked it out and brought it in the boat with us to teach us about it. Gerson was born and raised here, so who better to teach us about life in the jungle than one who belongs to it?
We also got to see his village, located between the Maranon and Yarapa rivers, and we even played a game of football (soccer) with the locals.
After we returned to the city of Iquitos, Gerson brought us to an animal sanctuary where they were breeding all sorts of animals, such as monkeys, sloths, anacondas, etc, etc. This place was very interesting as well.
I couldn't have asked for a better trip, everything about it was wonderful. If ever you plan on going to the Amazon, i strongly recommend that you get Gerson to go with you, because then you will get to know the real Amazon and her real people. To get his contact info, or to pose any questions, just message me and I will answer you. It costs less to go with him than with the big agencies, and this way you contribute back to the people of the rainforest.

If you're planning on taking a trip into the Amazon with a guide, I just wanted to warn people about a guide that my girlfriend and I employed in May 2010, who we found to be untrustworthy. 2 seriously unprofessional events happened during our time with him.

First, one night we left about 150 USD in his possession and the next day he claimed he was robbed shortly after we parted company and that all the money was stolen. He then claimed he didn't have the money to pay us back. I have no proof either way whether he was really robbed or not, but I did really doubt his story at the time.

Second (and much worse in my mind) , on the second last day of our 8 day trip, while returning back up the Amazon to Iquitos on one of the big passenger boats, Dany and my gf were talking. During this talk, and kind of out of the blue, Dany asked my gf to marry him! And he was serious! My gf told him that she was not interested but he continued to pressure her and wouldn't let her leave until she agreed. Eventually she managed to get away and came back to where I was sitting with all our gear. She didn't tell me immediately what had happened because she was worried that I would react badly and maybe get chucked in jail or something. So she had to spend the next 2 days feeling nervous about being around this guy. Anyway, we both trusted him and felt pretty bummed when he turned out to be a weasel. And based on comments made by him, I don't think that this is first time that he has blurred the line between client and potential mate. So I caution anyone planning on taking a trip with this guide, that this is the level of professionalism and morality that you can expect.

I further want to pass on some good tips an Aussie fellow gave me on hiring guides for Amazon expeditions:
1. Get the name, address, business name and govt registered business number of any guide prior to booking any trips with him
2. Leave your trip info (where you're going, with whom, guide's name and info, how long you're going for, when you'll be back, your personal info, etc.) with your consulate and the Peru board of tourism
3. Make sure you tell your guide that you've done step 2
4. Get a signed contract/receipt detailing what services will be provided, what costs are covered, the duration of the trip etc. from the guide up front before leaving
5. Pay 1/3 or 1/2 of the fee up front and pay the remainder upon delivery of all agreed upon services...this will keep your guide honest in fulfilling his end of the bargain

The Amazon is totally worthwhile seeing, and going it on your own with a guide rather than a tour group is really rewarding...just choose the right guide!!!! Feel free to contact me for more info and happy travels everyone.

We had six days with Rainforest Expeditions. We were taken out once to the salt lick to see the macaws and parrots and two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon to see wildlife. The rest of the time there is nothing to do, you cannot explore by yourself for fear of getting lost. Although the lodges are very nice, our guide seemed disinterested and I felt like we were bothering him to have him take us out at all and if you are not an avid birder, I would suggest a shorter visit. There are too many people to really see many animals, this part of the jungle is far from wild. This trip did not meet my, perhaps unrealistic, expectations.

We booked the trip directly with Rainforest Expeditions through their internet site (PeruNature.com). This was a totally uneventful experience – everything worked like it was supposed to.

While on the Amazon, the sights were great, the lodging comfortable, the food excellent, guides awesome - but the most amazing thing was their response when our flight back to Lima was cancelled.

These folks heard the flight was cancelled, they came to the airport and found us, arranged transportation to a local hotel (that they recommended), brought us back to the airport in the morning and did all the negotiation with the airlines to get us on another flight. This was totally unexpected & they were able to make an otherwise unpleasant experience a non-issue.

A truly wonderful company to do business with; I highly recommend them and will use them the next time I visit the Amazon.

We spent 8 days on the Delfin II, operated by National Geographic and Lindblad, looking for wildlife. Apart from a few birds, this was the most barren wildlife area I have ever been in. I say that after more than 25 years of extensive wildlife videography and photography around the world. We saw a few monkeys as we passed by behind some bushes and a sloth (black blob) 200 feet away high in a tree. That's it. Our guide said that he had not seen a capybara in five years! No caimans!

If you are interested in wildlife, avoid this region. The boat, crew, food and accommodations are excellent, but if you want to go on a cruise, go to Miami.

I highly recommend visiting Manu but NOT for the standard 3night trip. You won't see much wildlife as you need to get further into the jungle and away from people, settlements and other tour groups.

I took a 7 night trip with amazon trails Peru based in cusco. The trip was excellent. We saw tapir from their night hide, capybara, snakes, a Harpie eagle, monkeys and birds of all kinds. The tour was well organised and the guide was good.

Main criticism was that it was expensive. You could argue this is inevitable since it was 2 days journey each way but I have recently done another jungle trip and for equivalent money you weren't expected to share rooms and the food was infinitely better. I'm not sure where the money is going.

Also be really clear about costs when booking. I was told I could have a south American explorers discount but when it came to it this was refused on the basis that the operator thought I was enquiring on behalf of someone else!! Hmmm.

Overall worth doing but probably better value for money elsewhere.

Possibly one of the most memorable trips i've been on. we flew into iquitos where amazonia picked us up and took us to their lodge to stay over night. In the morning their boat took us up river to the tahuayo lodge where the we stayed for 3 days and nights. At the lodge the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, our guide was amazingly knowledgeable and took us out fishing ,bird watching walking through the jungle and zip lining through the canopy among other things. Each day the staff made amazing meals using fresh produce. It is possibly one of the most relaxing and beautiful trips i've been on. An amazing way to reconnect with nature and completely disconnect from city life. Highly recocmmended.

I went on a 5 day 4 night trip to the Tambopata Research Center, and the trip exceeded my expectations in every single way. The location was unbelievably beautiful, there were frequent and diverse animal sightings, and the staff was suburb. Indeed everyone we met was highly knowledgeable, extremely courteous, and committed to ensuring a wonderful trip for their guests. The lodging and food were also great which is particularly impressive given that the only access to the center is a 5+ hour boat ride.
